There are many companies who do not accept South African native English speakers, and this is a great pity. South African native English speakers are incredibly proficient in the language, have a neutral accent, most of the time and are extremely hard and conscientious workers. It is a huge misconception, that because South Africa has eleven official languages, that there are no native English speakers. Many times if companies do accept South African teachers, they are often paid less, because of this misconception. Very disappointing and quite disheartening.

I taught in class for about 4 years, took a 3 year break, and am now teaching on italki. @@EnglishTeacherRyan I was thinking about taking the Callan Certification class. It’s not long and seems well worth it. Just a thought. have IETLS certification also but I haven’t done much with it. It’s difficult to navigate the ESL world being new. The Callan method seems to be a good niche. Lesson planning has drained the life out of me and most of my students just want to have a conversation so I’ve geared my “sessions” towards that but even an hour long convo is a bit of a stretch. I usually stick with working adults/students. I’m always open and I’ve literally just found out about Callan so your experience with this method would be a help. Thanks SOOO much! 🥰
Hi Ryan! Thanks for your video! I have a question, I teach English to students privately using my Instagram to find these students. I want to apply to work at ESL companies, can I apply to multiple companies and continue working on my own? Or is this against the policies of these companies?
You can work with as many companies as you want and still continue your own private tutoring. Just read the companies policies to see if you can still tutor on the side, but then again, how would they even know about your tutoring if you don't mention it?
As someone who has been teaching on Cambly on & off for the past 2 years, I could never recommend anyone to apply with this company. I had taught with 4 other ESL companies before Cambly & I never experienced the amount of headaches like you get on Cambly. They have so many tech issues which get blamed on the tutor, you lose money on many occasions due to their connection problems, the pay is so little, it's pathetic & there are many tutors who come across flashers. The students themselves are wonderful, but the curriculum is by far the worst I've ever come across. If you do decide to apply to Cambly, make sure you create an email address just to use for them because they will spam you with a ridiculous amount of emails everyday you teach. If you want to tutor on Cambly as a hobby & you're not particularly bothered about the money, then go for it & good luck.
