      Have to admit watching the documentary and Alex's attitude sort of lulled me into this mindset. I was thinking this seems possible. He seems to know what he's doing. He's so chill about it, it can't be as bad as it looks. When in fact it's as close to impossible as you can get and he did it all with the huge weight of his immediate death hanging over him for 4 hours. The is not a normal man or a normal achievement. This is beyond comprehension for most people. I literally can't fathom the sort of mindset one would need to accomplish something like this.

      anyone can do it. And by anyone someone whos rock climbed practically there entire life and then sets a goal to do it and prepares for a few years. Its just the fact of that group of people is so small most dont have the drive or want to do it.

    • @thomasw4506
      @thomasw4506 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @Heidi actually it is mindset. You can’t overcome something scary without focus and discipline and that requires a good mindset. Alex devoted himself to practice and repetition. He practiced so much that he was able to overcome the fear and nervousness. It’s like driving a car. Give someone who has driven a car over a hundred times and I guarantee the part of their brain that shows fear will not light up. Then do a brain scan of someone who has never driven a car and put them in a car. You’ll see that part of that brain light up. Alex talked a lot about overcoming fear in his TedX talk.

He doesn’t do it for North Face, he doesn’t do it for attention and he doesn’t even do it to check off the box. The man does it because he believes in himself to do it, and he knows he can die every time. He’s amazing and Free Solo has been one of the coolest movies I have ever seen. A message to the un-initiated who may stumble upon this video:
    Free soloing El Cap is perhaps the single most incredible feat of skill, strength, mental toughness and endurance ever accomplished by a human being... in the history of human beings.
    If you want to get a very, very tiny sense of the fear, just climb without ropes or harness 20 feet up an 'easy' climb -- say a climbing wall at the gym -- stop and look down. If that's not hard enough, try 20 ft up a crack on a granite wall, say the outside of a building ... then, climb back down before you hurt yourself.
    Now, multiply that by *150 TIMES*... 3,000 vertical feet, no stopping, no turning around, no giving up, and never, ever letting go.
    This man is a living God!

      jack moore "climber" really? don't tell me thats autocorrect. Americans have placed on pedestal feats more inconsequential than this and labeled those who've done it heroes. If you're trying to downplay this mans achievement just to underly the person you've replied to, because of his statement of admiration towards Alex, you seriously have a problem. Now, it maybe a simple case of jealousy, envy, perhaps insecurity, nonetheless you sound pretty pathetic with your attempt.

      Jack Moore - seems you don't understand the difficulty and sheer insanity of Alex's accomplishment. For example, the first man to climb Everest is revered and remembered, even "respected." It's Sir Edmund Hillary, by the way. Without question, climbing El Cap without ropes is FAR more difficult. Hillary is "respected" for his "achievement" and rightly so. Hundreds have climbed Everest since Hillary completed the feat. I doubt anyone in our lifetimes will duplicate Alex's feat. Think about that. Alex's "achievement" is so rare that he is the ONLY one to have done it, and is probably will still be the only one 50 years from now. Perhaps someone hundreds of years ago did it alone and without fanfare, but that is highly unlikely. Respect? Yes, that is the right word, because as humans we should respect an activity that is singular, almost superhuman, and one that requires endless preparation -- a lifetime of preparation. Do you respect the first man on the moon? The first to climb Everest? The first person to surf a massive wave? The first to explain a difficult mathematical concept? If you fail to recognize Alex's "achievement" it says a lot about you, and everything it says about you is not favorable. Call it psychoanalysis if you want, but that does not make it less true.

    • @jacobbonfante3037
      @jacobbonfante3037 5 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Elmo Blatch the moon landing and mathematical concepts have societal and scientific benefits. What exactly does climbing a big rock do for society at large ? Sure it’s an achievement and should be praised for what it is. Respected or treated with respect ? Seems a little over the top

    Alex Honnold is one of the most nicest, down to earth, not a show off, super athlete. He knows what he is doing and he works really hard to make it happen. Last Jimmy´s comment is so rude and a bad choice for a comedian. Would he talk about concussions to NFL players and making that last comment? To car racers? To bull fighters?

    • @AGH331
      @AGH331 7 ปีที่แล้ว +21

No climber has even come close to accomplishing the Climbs he has. El Capitan is one of the hardest rope climbs there is in the world, he did it without a rope. It is considered one of if not the most impressive athletic feat by humankind. If you watch the movie of him climbing it, you will be white knuckling the entire time.

      Guys guys relax. I had the same reaction at first but as others have explained, he meant "you will be missed" like when an athlete is hanging it up/done/retiring...because the comment came right after Alex said El Capitan was the pinnacle for him and didn't have anything else planned. As terrible as the interview was, I feel slightly better having watched that part again and realizing Jimmy wasn't referring to death, but the fact Alex might be done with any serious climbing.

      I don't think you understand that this probably the toughest type of interview for a talk show host, being with someone that is not used to being in the spotlight on television in this way. Clearly Alex was nervous at the start and jimmy had to do what Comedy hosts do and loosen things up a bit with some humor. Eventually Alex got comfortable and opened up more. Also it's Jimmy's job to ask those "tedious questions", in which by the way he already knows the answer, he's just playing the ignorant "every man".
