The thing about Finnish solitude is that it's liberating. Finns shy away from a lot of social norms as is as they don't really do small talk, they respect your private space and they don't mind the silence at all, but they are absolutely some of the most communal/hospital people out there provided you respect their culture.

Hello Eva. Thanks so much for taking me to meet Janita; I thought I lived an 'off the grid' lifestyle as a self employed musician (I live very frugally) but she was amazing. All the Sami people in your vlogs seem to have a serenity about them; a sense of being at peace with themselves; happy within their own skin. Thank God the same people have survived. Pete Glyde

Wishing her much success and lots of visibility from this video so she stays busy. The reindeer and scenery are so beautiul.
Honestly, you don't need a van. If you did get a van, you'd miss Odysessy so much! So stick with her. And sunrises, especially after a snow, are so beautiful, peaceful, quiet, and the absolute best!

I read a book in the 1970's called Zen And The Art Of Motorcycle Maintaneance (it wasn't about bike maintence, i was a story of a guy - Robert Prisic, taking his son on a tour around America with his thoughts and philosophy). One observation he made in the book was people who live in dense comuinities like cities have small distances between them but huge emotional distance from each other. On the other hand, people who live a long way from their neighbours with lots of space appear to be much closer emotionaly. Your experiance seems to go along with that idea!

Sometimes, this old man sees something that brings a tear to his eye. You took me back +30 yrs to my 10 acres and small house 25 miles north out of town into the northern Minnesota wilderness. Where snow was just as deep and the cold was noticeably further below zero Fahrenheit. No reindeer, but sled dogs were popular. I think the reindeer are better suited with their feet like snowshoes. Plus, you only need one instead of 6 or 8. It's a great life for sure.

It does not surprise me that people are happier and have a stronger sense of community there. I recently visited New Zealand, which is also not that densely populated, unlike Europe and other areas of the world, and I was struck with how nice random strangers were and how safe it felt. Overpopulation is a serious problem and definitely decreases quality of life, since people become hyper-competitive for resources and, therefore, narcissistic.

Another Eva Zu Beck masterpiece added to your legacy. 🌿 Btw, your closing statement was perfect!
"Maybe in places with so few people
and so much space, you end up finding something
that's easily lost in the crowded busyness of the city.

Hi Eva, imagining your travels in a van is comforting. The fulfillment in your purpose isn't defined by your means of travel. I'm pretty sure you know this already; Clarity may bring comfort, but if comfort is all you seek, then you will never find clarity. Believing that the modern-day conveniences of Van Life is more or less deserving to YOUR purpose isn't something to fret about. Oprah said, "Become what you believe." If you want a van, I say, find the perfect van for your travels. You deserve it! If you want a horse and chariot, you deserve that, too. Embracing desired changes or choosing to live a life with multiple identities is A-Okay!

LOVE Finland! As an American doing defense work there, I was captivated by “sisu” and their capacity for toughness, being one with the frigid outdoors, SAUNAS, and ability to live next door to…Russia. Asked to explain “sisu,” one female waiter in Helsinki said, “it means…balls.” The US embassy in Helsinki, does their 4th of July celebration, traditionally a huge deal in every US embassy abroad, NOT on the 4th, if I remember before May 2, because on that date most of Finland is up north! Nobody would be around. So we show respect and conduct the big event much earlier to accommodate the Finnish culture. Ask any Finn about the 1939 Winter War…in the face of insurmountable odds, they held off 22 Soviet divisions. That’s sisu… 🇫🇮

The fact these reindeer herders live this lifestyle in such a modern time, is what makes it so special. Love that this young woman made her mark in what seems like a male dominated tradition.🎉

Another wonderful video. Loved the music you chose to highlight that region. Your genuine-ness is so refreshing. No affectation, just pure wonder in each experience. No glamorization, just pure reality with all the good sincere vibes, even through struggles and personal disappointments. I look forward to each episode. You're a very brave girl going it alone like this. Vilk is a terrific companion and he's having a blast as well. Temperatures like that are very dangerous and not to be taken lightly. Every detail has to be put in place with great care and planning. Carry on, dear friend.

It’s their breeding reindeer and worth so much for the herders. So they do this to get attention. Drive safe Eva ❤You are really tough 👍🏻Cheers from Sweden 🇸🇪 I worked as a chef and traveled the world working on ships 🚢 all over as a chef.

Greetings from Scotland! Janita is absolutely right! The only person who can really hold you back is YOU! IF you really want anything, then you have to go for it and believe in yourself! 😊 Loneliness is relative, because it is not the quantity of friends you have but the quality of your friends, trust between you and knowing that you will help each other without question or hesitation. My best friend (since my youngest son passed) has always been there for me. I know I can phone him from anywhere in the world and he will try to help me without question and he knows I will do the same for him. We may only meet face to face once in a year but it is always like it was just yesterday we met last. Thank you for a wonderful video Eva! 👍👍😊😊

Awesome video as always Eva and Vilk. Sometimes the most remote places are where you find your most happiness time in life because the stress just melts away even in the most coldest places. Thanks for letting us ride along with y’all on y’all’s adventures.

There is a CHAZM of difference between alone and lonely. I’ve never been as alone as I was when I surrounded by people who, I soon realized, only wanted me for what I could do for them. After my cancer diagnosis, most of them fled when it looked like maybe I was going to be in a position where I may have needed something small from them, like rides etc. POOF!! WHOOOSH!! That sucking sound was virtually all of them deserting me. I’ve now lived by myself for over 7 months; while there are times I do feel a bit lonely, I know my son is there if I need anything. All told, I’m alone at least 99% of the time; but lonely? Less than half.

I see your mug is from Dutch Harbor, AK. I guess you must of visited there before I started watching your videos. That is a pretty remote place as well, but more populated. I visited there when I lived in AK & got stuck there longer because the weather & seas got nasty. This is a very interesting video, thanks!

PS. When I used to be in a cliate like north of Finland, I always kept a full tank of fuel so in case if I would be stuck for a few days with no help, I could keep the vehicle on so the heater would save my life. Besides the usual candles and lots of wool blankets and clothes. Stay warm.😊

You're definitely living a dream. Something that I had always wanted to do. I'm American and the first time I went to Europe was with the army, absolutely loved it, this was 99-00. Always wanted to do something like this, but got tied down becoming a husband and father. We now have retired to France, so have started to expand our global travel, but it's not as carefree as something like when you're young. Enjoy yourself.
