Is Russia Evil? | Zero Hour | Ep 43

  • Father Josiah Trenham, pastor of St. Andrew Orthodox Church, joins James Poulos to discuss modern-day Christianity in a technologically changing America. As an Orthodox pastor, he gives his thoughts on the Russia-Ukraine conflict and how Orthodox Christianity has changed in Russia since the fall of communism. Similarly, he explains Orthodox history in Israel and Gaza and how the Palestinian conflict has affected both Jews and Christians. How can Christians find anchors in modern Protestant churches when the world around them has turned to war? He argues there is a way to find faith and that America seems to be turning in a positive religious direction.

    Orthodoxy is the one and true church which has apostolic succession. God established only one church and promised to preserve until the end of times. Through Orthodoxy God gave us the Bible. It was Saint Athanasius who canonized the Bible and now the whole world has the word of God. Glory be to God ❤

    • @tjkhan4541
      @tjkhan4541 24 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      With real respect, Orthodoxy has historical and theological issues, like every denomination. Christ established His church and will preserve it, but He didn’t say He would preserve it infallibly from all error. The New Testament documents from the apostles show error entering the church in many places and ways.
      Athanasius is a wonderful hero of the faith, but he did not single-handedly canonize the NT. And he did not affirm icon veneration in the way the Seventh Ecumenical Council claimed and mandated for all true Christians.
      I don’t say any of this to attack you personally, but because information spreads so easily via the internet. Grace to you.

    • @Theoretically-ko6lr
      @Theoretically-ko6lr 24 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

      @@tjkhan4541 to begin with, Orthodoxy is not a denomination but a pre-denomination. The whole argument falls apart right from your first sentence. God promised something but what you say its just twisting words to also support your argument which fell apart earlier. God is God so when He promises something, He does not make any discounts. He gave us the church and that church will remain intact until the end of times. Orthodoxy does not have a single error when it comes to doctrines, because if it did, it would contradict Gods promise.
      Since you are saying that Saint Athanasius didn’t single handedly canonized it..then can you give us the other names? Are you saying that you dont accept the 7th council?
      My brother, There is no salvation outside of the one and true church. Good luck interpreting the Bible, which is God brethren, by yourself. Just remember there will be the day of judgement…and then we will all go through it..Are you confident that your solo path will secure your salvation? There is a saying “the lonely sheep gets eaten by the wolf” . God bless!

      @@Theoretically-ko6lr I wish God’s blessings to you too, friend. Thank you for that.
      I do think we disagree about what God actually promised about the church. I agree with you that He always keeps His promises, but the question is the content of the specific promise.
      I do not accept the Seventh Ecumenical Council. I don’t mean this to give offense to you or anyone, but I think historically, it’s just very hard to argue that icon veneration was present before the sixth or seventh century. And it’s also hard to reconcile with the whole Bible’s theology.
      Fully agree with you on the day of judgment, and I’m sure that not all my theology is exactly what it should be, but I am 100% confident in my salvation before the Lord and status in Christ, because the good news of Christianity is not limited to one institutional church. He died in my place and gave me His righteousness to be reckoned to my account before God. I want all my Eastern Orthodox friends to know that same joy and peace. Grace to you, friend.

    • @Theoretically-ko6lr
      @Theoretically-ko6lr 24 วันที่ผ่านมา +3

      There are plenty of verses where God instructed how to make icons. In fact some of the Apostles made the first icons. Were the Apostles wrong in that or they were less knowledgeable than us. I suggest you reading some history of the church or listen to some great Fathers of the church that explain the icon veneration based on the Bible.
      Also how are you 100% sure of your salvation brother, for which i wish you the best. According to Corinthians 9-27, Apostle Paul, one of the greatest preacher and Huge believers of Christ, he was still afraid of his salvation. If Paul was afraid why dont we all are?! Are we more faithful that the Apostle Paul who spread the Gospel? Didnt Jesus die for his sins also? As you see claiming that we are already saved its unbiblical and also a heretical false teaching. Orthodoxy says, we have been saved, we are being saved, and we shall be saved. Lets read Corinthians 9-27 again, and then lets compare our faith to Pauls. If he was afraid, how can we be not?

    • @tjkhan4541

      @@Theoretically-ko6lr with real respect, I think that (1) you are conflating art with icons, and (2) you are accepting late historical claims as having apostolic veracity, without evidence. The first evidence for Luke being an iconographer, for example, comes from Theodorus Lector in the sixth century; it’s just not apostolic.
      May I ask which chapter of 1st or 2nd Corinthians you have in mind?

      Father Josiah converted to Orthodoxy from the Presbyterian faith. A large number of Protestant evangelicals were welcomed into the Antiochian Orthodox Church by Metropolitan Philip of blessed memory. This was a great blessing for America, as many foreign-born Orthodox bishops do not encourage conversion, especially if the converts eventually outnumber the cradle Orthodox and ask for an independent American Orthodox Church.

Where the Kremlin still has atheists within, where we can not forget what The U.S.S.R./Soviet Union did to all the faithful, where many died, any number made it to the U.S. Where I liked Putin, a judoka, fly fisherman, and assumingly Orthodox, but politics is politics, where if Buddhists, a leader may claim to be Buddhists. As Steven Seagal is something like Buddhists and said to be right there with Putin. But Putin as said is likeable, yet, he has to do and say what is expected of him. If he doesn't, someone else will. Which Ukraine is Orthodox, but the two are killing each other. Thats never made sense to me.

For life has no terrors for him who has thoroughly understood that there are no terrors for him in ceasing to live. Foolish, therefore, is the man who says that he fears death, not because it will pain when it comes, but because it pains in the prospect. Whatever causes no annoyance when it is present causes only a groundless pain in the expectation. Death, therefore, the most awful of evils, is nothing to us, seeing that, when we are, death is not come, and when death is come, we are not. It is nothing, then, either to the living or to the dead, for with the living it is not and the dead exist no longer" Epicurus - Letter to Menoeceus

    Christ has risen!
    Before the middle of 19th century the Church was not a state business, the priests didn't had a steady income from the state, wasn't a state employee at lest here in Romania. Therefore the priest had to stay 24/7 in his parish to make all the services needed, hi was living with the "income" from his flock, priesthood wasn't a job, it was a calling. Cuza, one of the kings of Romania changed that, he confiscated the fortunes, lands, etc belonging to the monasteries and gave a monthly income to the priests, now the priests could go on holiday not fearing that at the end of the month he will have nothing to put on the table for his family. Slowly but surely the priesthood became what we see now, the priest has a working schedule, he goes at the beach on holiday and doesn't care that much about his flock. I don't want to make it look like every priest from Romania is like that, off course there are priests that are dedicated to their calling and love their flock and would do everything in order not to lose any member of his flock, but more and more men came to priesthood because is a easy and well paid "job".

      Brainwashed assertion.
      Russia's history is defined by conquering its neighbors across Eurasia in the name of "its own security". I'd say that's pretty evil for them to deny sovereignty to neighboring countries. The Czarist Russians didn't have a right to conquer the hundreds of ethnic groups surrounding them, especially when they engaged in ethnic cleansing after doing so (see the Pogroms), and neither did the Soviet Union (see the Holodomor and other atrocities). Doubly so regarding the Soviets given the dozens of ethnic states like Ukraine which attempted to assert their sovereignty during the Russian Civil War, only to get steamrolled by the Bolsheviks.
      Ukraine today was aggressed upon by Vladimir Putin (who is the grandson of the personal chef of Vladimir Lenin and Joseph Stalin, and who tried to sign up for the KGB [the Soviet equivalent of the CIA] when too young to do so, meaning that as a KGB officer, he is *AT LEAST* as bad as whatever nightmares you think the CIA gets up to), as evident by Putin's "Little Green Men" (Russian mercenaries in Putin's employ) who infiltrated Crimea, Donbas, and Luhansk and started attacking Ukrainians there before and during 2014.
      Remember, those three territories before the 1940s were Ukrainian/Cossack dominant, and then Stalin inflicted the Holodomor on them to try to break Ukrainian Nationalist resistance to him, starving to death over a couple million people, hollowing out the population of the regions, and then forcibly importing tens of thousands of ethnic Russians who were loyal to him and the Soviet government to repopulate the territory and secure a land corridor to the Black Sea and the Soviet naval base situated in Crimea. So, Putin's whole claims to the territory are based on the dirty genocidal ethnic cleansing tactics of one of his predecessors, the dictator of the country in whose employ he was as a Soviet secret agent in the KGB. I think the evilness of the Russian government at least is firmly established with those facts.

If you think your or anyone’s exclusive interpretation of Scripture is superior or even adequate in comparison to that of the Apostles, the Apostolic Fathers, Church Fathers, Saints and Martyrs who relied only and exclusively on the authority of the Holy Spirit and the enduring voices of the many that is the fingerprint of the Holy Spirits continued inspiration and involvement in the Body of Christ to interpret Scripture then you are grossly mistaken. @@cajunoneforchrist4545 Fr. Trenham is not Roman Catholic. Using one’s Brain in matters of History, Religion and Theology lead me to one conclusion, the One Holy, Catholic (not Roman) and Apostolic Church, Christs Church Founded on Pentecost that has remained faithful to Scripture it is responsible for it through guidance of the Holy Spirit. The Papacy wrestled away the Authority to determine Truth from the Holy Spirit and gave it to the Pope. The Protestant Reformers took it from the Pope and gave it to themselves and American Evangelicalism took it from the reformers and granted that authority to anyone with a Bible and an opinion who lacks the fear of God to use it. I’m not saying anyone is wrong just explaining how can you know who is correct and why. I think scholars call it epistemology. The unilateral primal decrees of a single man or that very synodal and conciliatory doctrine defined and practiced in Scripture by the Apostles themselves?
      It’s difficult to describe Using one’s brain to allow confidence in Scripture while simultaneously discarding the Biblical tradition and principles that the Body of Christ deployed to create Scripture. That requires a belief that the Apostles, Apostolic Fathers and Church fathers were only inspired by the Holy Spirit in their authorship and curation of Scripture but lacked similar or any inspiration or guidance in every other aspect of their respective Ministries, which of course is so narrow minded that it requires you to discard all the scripture, which is vast, that pertains to the establishment and vary practices demanded by Scripture they upheld and put into use. The very order under Bishops, Presbyters and Deacons and commands that we be of one mind and Judgement through the enduring consensus Scripture defines as pleasing to the Holy Spirit, for instance. Those who established Christ Church as commanded on Pentecost and those directly taught by the Apostles each represented on Pentecost are far better interpreters of Scripture because they held, lived and understood the complete and complicated cultural context which no matter how hard one tries or claims simply can’t recreate. Melanchthon knew this himself so why would Bacon and Billy Graham and Joel Osteen for that matter ignore his lead let alone Ignatius. Polycarp and Clement if not to create some new patch that they can claim jurisdiction over for God or for themselves the motives don’t matter. After all, one’s Protestantism in the 16th century and now is determined more by one’s City and Municipal authority than anything defined by Scripture. Otherwise Knox’s Church wouldn’t be different than Calvin’s and Calvin wouldn’t be different from Luther’s. The very decrees they drafted to define themselves are named after the City from which they originated, London, Augsburg, Westminster…….. This is precisely why the “Rock” church is different from the Church of Christ and Lonnie Frisbies was different than Greg Laurie’s, that is different than Joel Osteen’s. Forgive me I can’t help but to pick on Joel, probably because my wife listens to him and he’s so pretty and pleasant.
      The worship Father Trenham is Presbyter over would be far more recognizable to the Apostolic Fathers than anything that occurs in Rome let alone in any Protestant tradition. Does that mean it’s perfect? Does that mean his opinions on Israel and the Ukraine and the United States role, even obligation to the world in the 21st. Century are spot on? Of course not. Does that fact make a compellingly argument that it is in fact Right and True? Yes of course. We should all seek the same thing, a good account of ourselves before the fearsome and awesome judgements seat of Christ and of those which have received much, much is required and that means to use our brains and our hearts and our very being.
      You don’t have to go to any Church to have a personal relationship with Christ, but if you wish to strengthen that relationship to the greatest degree possible, all things being equal, through contemplative prayer and worship and especially receiving the Sacraments, the best place with the greatest chance of pleasing the Holy Spirit most is in the Eastern Orthodox Church.
      Thanks for the exchange and opinions. Again, Forgive me a sinner.
