    grow! We talk about temperature, watering, sunlight requirements, how
    to harvest, and spacing. It is a very easy plant to grow and I think
    you all will love growing it once you see just how easy it is!

    Leaves do matter, at least here in India. We mostly harvest leaves so that we can add them to our Tea. It adds amazing flavor to it. Thanks for the info though.

    2 points: 1. The purple color that comes with the cold is a good thing for nutrition and medicinal value. 2. That lemon grass leaf you tossed is the best part. I grew up in lemon grass country, and we picked those leaves and boiled them both fresh and dried for a few days, but especially dried, when the flavor and release of nutrients is best.

    Okay, I'm Asian and from a culture that uses a lot of lemongrass for cooking, leaves do matter. 😉 Infact, we cut the stalk leaving the rest of the bottom stalk and roots for further growth.

    If you buy yourself a glass distillation kit (like those used in university chemistry labs), you can extract the essential oils from lemongrass and other herbs by steam distillation. Lemongrass essential oil makes a great fragrance ingredient for homemade soap.

    Yep, the white stalks near the roots are excellent for cooking (when diced) and steaming (when left in longer lengths). For a delicious pot of stock or broth, whole lengths of lemongrass should be used: bunch them together with strings, and boil away with meat bones, resulting in a final broth that gives-off a nose-pleasing lemongrass aroma.

    Never considered the fact it would be hard for anyone to grow. I planted it sparsely along my parent's back fence. In a very short time I would divide and replant in the open sections. • @pjd2709
      @pjd2709 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes, they do. But I bet you have found that out by now. I would harvest them before the cold weather sets in, just take some nice little stems and leave the root area on as much as possible, cut off the top leaves, so the plant is so tall (cut off for 6-10 inch length) and have some jars and place a few stems in as many you can, and over the winter they should make roots and come spring you can plant into pots and the cycle begins again. (Also look at a later post I answered it gives more details how to start plants) For us in the colder areas, I think we need to keep starting new plant every year or just keep some when harvesting and re-pot then and keep indoors over winter, after all danger of frost has passed put them out - remember to harden them off first before putting them outside!

    The leaves CAN matter, IF you want to repel mosquitoes anywhere on your property! Lemongrass containers citronella, so I cut them up & place them underneath, for example, at the base of two large viberna shurbs on either side of my front door, where mosquitoes seem to like to congregate! Remember, nothing in nature is wasted. All has a purpose.

    first time seeing this vid of yours. great info. thanks. buuut, i thought that you could eat the leaves too, ive heard that from a few other videos. also, do they repel mosquitoes? thats the main reason why i recently bought some seeds. ive always grown from seed for almost anything and didnt feel like paying $8 for 1 plant lol....vs $1 for like 1000 seeds. also, where did u get those round tin raised beds in the background and how much?

      You can buy for $1.00 at the store and stick in water to root and make your own

    As a nitrogen hogging plant, wouldn't lemon grass do well growing with peas and other nitrogen fixing plants as companions?

    • @harshalshah4685
      @harshalshah4685 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      only if you turn the nitrogen fixing plants back into the soil. once the legumes flower, they use up the nitrogen before the lemongrass can get to it.

    How many seeds should you plant if starting indoors in lets say a 4inch wide container...

  • @shashakeeleh5468

    You didn't tell us how to plant the seeds!

    • @pjd2709
      @pjd2709 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @shashakeeleh You grow new plants by putting some of the stalks from the parent plant, (that has not had the root area cut of, it should have a really hard section at the bottom of the root, if it's cut above that it may not grow) or buy some Lemon Grass at your local Asian Market (look for those that are not cut up into the bulb part of the bottom) place a few 4-6 stems into a glass of water (filtered, not city tap if it has all that gunk in it, or take a clean used milk jug and put in tap water and leave it for 24 hours to evaporate most of that gunk in it) and use that for your cuttings, and change the water on a regular basis, you will see the water get yucky, don't let it sit in stinky water! You generally don't plant from seed!
      You do save the leaves also, for making tea, i would either use them fresh through out the g rowing season, then at harvest you can, in bunches hang upside down and dry in a cool dark area, or you can dry by dehydrator and store in jars after cutting up into smaller pieces. Hope this helps?

      I am in zone 9A also. I cut back the plant and dry the leaves in bundles to make a large soup pot of tea and put some in ice cube trays to flavor drinks soups etc after frozen put into ziplock bags.. Then dig the plant up and divide it with a serrated knife and got 16 new plants . Plant in fun sun and they are 5 foot tall 4 foot wide nand the middle stalks are seeding and they are the thickest stalks. you can freeze the stalks after you trim them.

    I just purchased some for the first time. Some were a pretty green and others were yellowish. What color should it be?

    • @pjd2709
      @pjd2709 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I would say Cynthia that your yellow ones are on their way out, they should be green, but keep with it for a bit as sometimes they take awhile to do anything. Mine last year, I had some roots within weeks, and some (4-5 plants) had nothing, but I left them there and they did get roots, it was probably about 3 months, just keep changing the water every week or twice a week, as they can get smelly. Keep a used milk jug, cleaned, fill with town water, if you don't have filtered water, you can use bottled water, why pay for it when all you do if fill your milk jug, and let it sit for 24 hours or more, use that water, to refresh plants when needed.

      Dig deep around the whole plant. Then lay on the side and take a shovel or a knife and cut into the root ball to divide it. I took one large plant and made 16 new plants .

      Let's Garden Together once they are turning there is not much you can do. You can try covering them with a blanket and that can slow the ripening process down a bit.

    I was married to a Thai lady for 22 years. She never grew lemongrass from seed and neither do I. It survives refrigeration. Buy the fresh lemongrass stalks in the grocery and put them in a pot of potting soil. This year I'm overwintering my plants in pots in the house and they are doing fine. Not growing, but alive and healthy. When the weather warms I'll split the clumps and plant them in the garden. I'm not sure when they go to seed, probably will have to start over then.
