    I bought mine in an overgrown pot and separated it into pots. I thought it was dying and left it alone...watered in hopes! Now, several months later...every pot is beautiful!!!

    I started mine from seed and I've been making tea with it with raw honey 🍯 mixed into the tea. SO good and very calming. I drink it before I go to bed and I've been sleeping very well

    Hi, I live in the UK but will now have a go at growing Lemon Grass on my window sill and hopefully transfer to the garden later now I have watched your very detailed instructions how to propagate lemon grass from store bought lemon grass. Thanks again for the inspiration to try it for myself. Val C. London

    I love your voice! I'm in England. Moved around the South Coast of this small Isle a lot, so, not likely, an accent you would encounter often if you look up "British accent"... I can but let you know, though, that I am hearing this pure, divine, wholesome passion, and it is enough to want to Subscribe and listen to you say your part. (Obviously I am also here to find out about lemongrass! That's niche enough!). We have so many accents in Britain, and quite strong ones, in the mix! (Just like a spice mix!). Your accent is very strong but I find it very joyful! You speak in rainbow sunshine dialect! :) x I can feel it.

      Gardening With Puppies let it grow all summer long, before winter cut them up and put them in your freezer. I put whole bunch in the bucket for next year for planting. Some PP put in their garage during winter. But I put my in the house. Change the water every two weeks. I also drop some of liquid plant food in some time keep it alive till planting season.

    I have lemongrass sitting in my greenhouse and was just going to use it for mosquito control. This was the best video I have ever watched when it comes to how to propagate and process lemongrass. Getting ready to head out there now to see what I can steal for propagation.

    Update: I had a wonderful harvest and the lemon grass infused water is a good way to use the left over part of the stem. I also used some stems to make some lemon grass infused olive oil and I hit a home run with that! Its good on salads and soups, it takes about 3 seconds to taste the lemongrass so it sneaks up on ya. Thank you again for this video.

    I love your vids! Just bought Blueberry and Raspberry roots from Walmart. Put them in potting soil. Covered them in a big zip lock bag tied loosely at the bottom as a makeshift greenhouse. Put them in the bay window. Starting inside first, because today 4-26-16 it's 28F and snowing. Zone 4a out!

      Lemongrass is easy to grow. No need to root them before sticking them in dirt.
      I usually do mix 50/50 compost and soil in a 5 gallon bucket (fill up to 70%). Plant 2-4 stalks around 5 inches. Good luck and have fun!

    Thank you, after watching this video earlier this year. I found some lemongrass plants at lowes for $8 and got one. Later in the season the price dropped to $4 and I bought 3 more. Each pot had 2 plants in it so I separated them and planted them. The first plant is in full sun and is massive. The others do not get enough sun and are kinda small but I will move them next spring. It is now October and time to harvest. That lemongrass infused water is something I have to try after it stops raining.

    My favorite How To video. I bought my first bit of lemongrass in the spring and it didn't grow very well. I think it is because the soil was too dense. However, I feel feeling confident that I can propagate some to have extra this spring. I live in zone 8a. I may be brave enough next year to try and leave some outside for the winter. I am so excited! Thank you so much for the explicit instructions!

      +Pamela Hagan Hi there! Thanks so much! I have other "How to Grow" videos on my channel and hope to upload many more soon. Also, feel free to follow me over on google plus where I share other things too! :)
      Please don't give up on the lemongrass. It grew very well for me in zone 8b (northwest Florida). It loves water, probably more than most plants. If you have a downspout which pours into a sunny area, it would be a great area for lemongrass to thrive. I had sandy soil in Florida but I have hard clay soil (this video). I think the key is water for both types of soil. :)

    Thank you for posting this. I grow lemongrass, which I love in my evening tea (lemongrass, lemon or lime balm, and fresh tulsi basil). I am in south zone 8b (Gulf Coast) and have over wintered mine both in pots and in the garden. I'd never thought of keeping stalks in water for the winter, but I think I would like to try it this winter to see if it gives me as much of a jumpstart. (Wonder if it would work as well with my sugarcane kept in a bucket & changing water often?)

    If you had a hori hori or a skinny trowel, you could probably dig deeper into the soil around the stalk and preserve the roots and pull them up with the stalk and replant it directly in the ground. Then you could skip the propagation process as you don't need to wait for new roots to regrow. You can do that with other types of grasses so I would imagine you can with Lemongrass too.

    • @RainbowGardens
      @RainbowGardens  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sure! I do that with my oregano, mint, and thyme. Works like a champ. Maybe I will save a rooted piece of Lemongrass and freeze the rest for cooking.

    Thank you so much for this video! This was my first year growing lemongrass in my garden & it did wonderfully! I'm also in 6B & this is just what I needed to see to get the most out of my lemongrass & expand it next year for FREE!!! I was planning to just purchase more.
    Do you notice that the presence of the lemongrass has aided with insect repellent at all? I use the essential oil in natural repellent/pesticide sprays but I'm wondering if the plant itself repels insects. Mine isn't really close enough to my back patio to notice. It'll be closer next year. I've use yard pesticides near the patio so I'll probably do large containers close to the patio & keep the 'safer' garden areas for in-ground planting.
    Can't wait to see more videos! Thanks again. ~ Raquel

    You only need about 2 inches at most to grow; and you can go ahead and start to grow it straight to your containers with soil or into the gardenbed or garden ground you want to grow it. It will start sprouting into many shoots.

    I planted 100 lemon grass seeds early this summer just sprinkle them over the top of potting soil little more dirt on top of seeds and I was 100% successful. They are easy to grow from seed❤️🌞

      I did that one time too but the stalks never got big enough to cook with, mostly blades of grass. :( But I am glad it worked for you! :)

      Hi! I am mainly started growing them as a mosquito repellent. Do you know if that actually works by any chance? Next summer I will plant them in the ground as I did not want our cold-weather to kill them this year. I wasn't sure so I have them in the house with me now. LOL

    Thank you for a great tutorial. You've answered all my questions :-)
    For while, I thought I had bought some ornamental variety because "my" lemongrass has purple tinge on the leaves and not very thick stocks :-)

    I live in Florida and mine is growing like wild fire . It has tons of seeds shooting out of the top and they drop and sprout all by themselves . I love lemon grass and ginger tea . I just go cut it and put in boiling water . let steep for 5 to 10 min. Yummy

      Dennis B. That is great! For quicker stalk production for cooking, try propagating a stalk. You will have a very large plant in no time. :)

    Well I suppose I bought the wrong stuff. Planted from seeds, it grew like crazy, but never got a lard stalk like that and died during the winter and went to lemon grass heaven. Last year I didn't even try. There are no markets around here to buy stalks from, so...guess I'll try seeds again. Very informative, Thank you!

    Hi Paula, do you have a video for dehydrating the tall stalks for tea? I'd really love to see how you would do that!

    • @RainbowGardens
      @RainbowGardens  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +PennyQuest Hi! I will have to do that this year. :) Perhaps in the fall when I harvest again. If I do it, I would dry the blades. If I were to dry the stalks, I would split them and mince. My dehydrator would do the trick for sure. I prefer to use the stalks for cooking. So that I do not waste anything, I dry the leaves for tea. Some people only use the stalks for tea, but I do not think they use them in cooking.:)

    Can you harvest the blades and allow the plant to continue growing?
    Can you use the green blades to make tea?

    • @RainbowGardens
      @RainbowGardens  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes, you can harvest the blades and simmer them for a mild tea or room freshner, however, most of the flavor is in the lower stalk.

    Best video I have seen on growing lemon grass because it goes through all of the processes. Two quick questions.
    1) Should I pull off the dead grass (stalks) that you inevitably have with any clumping grass.
    2) What hardiness zone are you growing in, I am in New Orleans (9a)

    • @Foodie_888
      @Foodie_888 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Just stick a stalk (5-7 inches) into the dirt no need to root in water. Zone 9a is perfect.

    Great video. What state do you live in that is 6B? You sound like you are pretty south of me, as I am up in CT. I also live in 6B+/- am not 100% sure what it is as there is a pocket of 7A just south of me about 10 miles. It can get pretty cold up here and I don't think there is a chance lemon grass would survive a winter here. Going to check out some more of your videos.

    • @RainbowGardens
      @RainbowGardens  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      My lemongrass only survived one winter. That particular winter was very mild for me.
