Nice! I wish I’d known this as I just left mine in the garden with mulch and it didn’t survive. I’ll get another plant and try this in the fall. 😊

I also tried leaving some lemongrass in my garden before and mulched it heavily. That experiment didn't work for me.

I live in zone 7 southern NC. I planted it this year for 1st time. From what I've read it cant survive below 20° I plan to get a large pot & repot it & bring it inside. I have a covered screened porch, but even with the screens covered the nights may not be warm enough without a heating source. But this is my 1st year growing it. It hasn't started getting big enough to use it yet. I cant wait till i can actually use some in recipes!!

thank you. helpful video. for the lemongrass you keep in the basement, how much light do they get? my basement is fairly dark. wondering how much light they need to over winter.
    thank you so much.

love your video and the pace when you speak; it's a feel good video as well. In winter where do you put you potted lemon grass? Thanks very much!!!

I’m in zone 6B so lemongrass shouldn’t survive winter here however, we had a very mild winter and I allowed the lemongrass to die and all of the dead plant material to stay hoping it would insulate/keep the roots alive. It’s spring and I’ve removed all of the dead plant material now but haven’t had any new growth yet. I assumed it didn’t make it but decided to dig up the roots of one cluster to check their condition and it seems as though the roots are healthy/fine. So my question is, if the roots are fine (not mushy or dried and are holding onto the soil well) will the lemongrass grow back? When can I expect to see new growth? Or should I just give up on it?

I assume overwinter mens how to protect it during wintertime? I live in south Texas and have mine in the ground

Yes, protecting the plant in the winter so it will survive for next year's garden. We get hard freezes in zone 7 so some plants will not survive outdoors.

I have some large lemon grass plants in my garden that are full size. I want to move them to a different part of my yard. When is the best time to do it? I'm in Northern Florida so we only get 1 or 2 frost days. Can I do it in the fall?

You cut so much that you may not be able to use it all. Do you dry them for future use?

Very nice Merli! I haven’t tried lemongrass yet. Composting lemongrass sounds great. I was thinking would you chickens like to scratch and eat the lemongrass?

Thank you, Rick. I usually put it in soup and other dishes. For some reasons, my chickens don't eat the lemongrass. I'm not sure if it's because part of the leaves are a little bit sharp.

So you trim your lemongrass plant and bring it indoors (or the garage) over the winter?

    • @GardeninginKentucky

      Yes

If you bring them in garage do you need to put a light on them? It doesn't get below freezing much in NC where I live, but the garage will be keep them from the frost. I don't have a basement here.
