Mr. Chan, your videos are a pure treasure! I make BJD dolls, and do some tutorials every now and then. What I love the most in your videos is your creative approach to bonsai. Several solutions to the same problem, searching for opportunities, using what you have at hand - are the principles that I share and promote in my work as well. So I subscribed! I don't have a yard, just a balcony, and I wanted to do a bonsai from a myrtle. I had a several years old tree that I bought from a previous owner. In the beginning of April I repotted the myrtle, and, as its root system was a complete tangled mess, I removed a significant portion of roots. The tree stopped growing at all and the leaves began to dry out one by one. A month ago you released this video, so I decided it's a time to "bite the bullet", and removed all the remaining leaves from my myrtle. So it had to be a hit or miss. I watered it all this time, but didn't have much hope. And a few days ago I noticed a lot of tiny buds on the most remaining branches! They're progressing fast, and I believe my myrtle survived for now. This is your merit, Mr. Chan! You saved another tree 😍
I cannot tell you how much this video helped me. My Japanese Maple died out and I thought I killed it! You’ve made me feel so much better and I have already starting to see new growth!
Hi there!! Here in Greece, this time of year, we have temperatures like 35-42 Celsius and it's very difficult to keep up with our trees! Thank you for all the knowledge that you share all this time!!!
Peter, just watched you on Gardeners World. It was great to see you on such a widely viewed show. Loved the trees you showed. I’ve been watching and learning from your videos for quite some time. Thanks for all you have done to educate us. Cheers!
Great video, very encouraging. I have a small trident maple that I got last year in the Summer. The beginning of the hot weather in my area cooked the leaves 🍁 on that tree because I didn’t give it enough water beforehand. I was afraid it was doomed. I pulled all the leaves off and watered it well. Thankfully it bounced back and grew new leaves.
I just brought back a bunch of small trees all around a foot tall from a campground in northern Michigan. Thought I had lost about 10 of them. I trim them back just like this and voila maybe lost two😊. The campground is extending its camping area into a new portion of the woods they let me save a bunch of little trees before they started bulldozing😊
6:20 that's amazing. I've never seen a tree without leaves and thought "that tree looks naked" instead of "that tree looks dead." Even in the winter, which I know is wrong. These trees look naked.
I loved your off-hand comment, about 4 minutes in, to the effect that: "if you leave the watering to your children, this is what will likely happen." Quite funny, but sadly, true!
Thank you Peter, very timely lesson in how to deal with maples in hot weather, all my maples are in a shaded structure so I have no damaged leaves, up to this point I have only had to water in the morning but if and when it becomes much hotter I will water twice along with other deciduous trees. Just a point to mention some pots can get very hot depends on the pot makeup so your idea to place in trays of water will help to keep the pots cooler even if the water is not covering the pot, it still helps, but make sure the water in the trays are not getting warm in very hot periods especially in very hot countries climates.
Here in Las Vegas, Nevada area I use drip systems for my bonsai and potted plants. Either an individual drip emitter to each plant or micro-sprays for where I have multiple plants in an area. I also have to use Shade cloths a lot.
A very timely video. I just frazzled my trident maple forest group.. It’s really hard to keep up even my small collection when it’s hot and dry in my near desert climate in the American Rocky Mountain west. I took Peters advice and leaf trimmed it and now I will cross my fingers and keep watering.
When I was really new to maples my Bloodgood got attacked by aphids and while I was trying to figure out that the soil dried out. It dropped every leaf and I panicked. A week later I dumped about 40/60 litres of water on the roots and watered every day after. It made a great comeback and now it’s getting big and strong.
I have one particular, small Deshojo maple that occasionally causes me concern when it gets leaf scorch and then requires a full defoliation to revive it and encourage the second flush of leaves.
Hi Peter sorry to hear that some of your trees dried out. I was wondering have you ever used any form of anti-transpirant to mist on the leaves of your Malpes after they have hardened off. The one I use is called Wilt Pruf and it coats the leaves so they do not need watered / dry out as much.
These Acers are originally sub canopy trees, the leaves are far more delicate because of this, which is why they are being grown under shade, but also, sub canopies tend to have greater humidity and less wind, both things reduce transpiration, and so reduce water stress. So some other ways to help is to reduce wind speeds, and increase humidity.
Hi Peter, thanks for the good instructions. Ever since i moved my ficus microcarpa outside in early May, im having trouble with burned leaves. I know its normal that they get burned while the tree is getting used to the sun, however the new growth from the past week also starts to get burned. I also moved a ficus benjamina outside at the same time, which got burned in the beginnng but after removing the burned leaves the new grwoth seems to have adopted to the sun and its looking very good know. This makes me wonder if microcarpa prefers a bit more shade while benjamina is a sunlover once properly adjusted. This is in Germany and and it hasnt been all that sunny in the past weeks.
This video couldn't have been posted in a better time. From a comfy but breezy 24C over the weekend, it was about 33C yesterday already and the forecast is calling 37C with no rain in sight, every day, for the next 5 days or so, on this side of the pond.

🙏Thank you for reassuring me about the mapples. I was just panicking and desperate for all my mapples which are dried out. We are in a heat wave for a couple of days (30°C, 40°C with humidex), so my trees are thirty🥵. Greetings from 🇨🇦.
This happened to one of my trees recently and I was absolutely heartbroken! The leaves are all gone now (and have been for a while) but I've not seen any signs of new growth, is there anything i can do to encourage it or should I keep waiting?
Have you or would you ever work with a Kaori Hime? I have one that I hard pruned with a trunk of about 2 inches thick. It was scorched and lost all of its leaves this summer and I chopped it back because every single leaf dropped. It’s doing well but I’m worried it may struggle if the new shoots don’t harden by winter.
Peter, once again thank you for the valuable information. I have a question. Forcing a severely sun burnt deshojo for example to produce all new foliage, does this tax the tree? I mean does the tree use valuable resources to produce the foliage? I live in the desert and my maples are struggling thanks for the help always. -Joe
Mr. Chan, a bit off subject but when taking care of new air layering…. Using spag. moss, how often should I water the new layering …..? Can you over soak the roots? Thanks in advance.
If you wrap the plastic tightly round the moss ball - it should not dry out at all. We never have to water the moss ball once the air layering is made. We just wait for the new roots to emerge
@@peterchan3100 thanks for quick reply. My question was pertaining to after the plant is separated from the parent plant and put into a container with the spag. moss. Hi Peter, just purchased my first acer, it's not a bonsai yet since it needs a lot of training so I am looking to get wire, and then try to control it a bit by cutting some of the branches as it is so vigorous that each node has 3-6 offshoots. Since it's a young sapling still, it looks like maybe a 3-4 year old, I am unsure as to whether I should watch out for something in case I mess up, or should I go with the flow, wire it to the desired future shape and give a good ol' haircut every now and then? The climate is the same as at your nursery.
@@peterchan3100 Thank you for the response, was also wondering what size wire would be suitable for such a young tree. Amazon has 1mm,1.5mm and 2mm wire packs, but I wanted to work a bit with the trunk too since it's still somewhere malleable, and I do not know if 2mm is enough? Or maybe Amazon is not the best place to buy wire 😅. I must get plane tickets to UK and visit herons for a workshop at some point, but for now I guess I'll keep watching all of the videos!
