They have a vessel that brings them up and down. There's been one case that I remember where someone opened the door to the metal container while the people were in it. Everyone in the container died instantly. The air was sucked out of their chest and literally opened their chest. Imagine exploding from the inside out. That's what it would feel

It's scary when you realize you've got better chances of surviving in space without a suit than at the bottom of the deep ocean without a suit. Granted, you'll only last a few seconds in space because you'll lose all the stored air in your lungs, but at least you've got a chance. Even a space station can remain safe with a small leak in it for quite some time. Meanwhile, if your submarine "pops" it can kill you instantly.
