- Amb. Kishore Mahbubani delivered the 2023 Anthony C. Janetos Memorial Distinguished Lecture hosted by the Frederick S. Pardee Center for the Study of the Longer-Range Future on April 11, 2023. The lecture was titled "Is the Asian Century Really Coming?"
The west doesn't understand China, that's for sure. The reasons are: 1. At the earliet stage, China was too weak and that made the west very arrogant, so they didn't even try much to understand China. 2. China was flexible to incorporate the western culture, econormic system etc., which led the west to believe China can be shaped to be a western-like country. But if one really study the Chinese, they will notice, China has since the beginning said it clearly they will learn the good from the west and discard the bad, they were never gonna totally turn themselves into a western society. Just like Kishore claims: China's thousands of years of culture backgound is deep deep rooted, you can't just change it like you wish. So the west's wish to change China has made themselves blind and.lead to more misunderstandings. 3.Because of the arrogance and ignorance, the west continue stubbornly to see China through their own lens, they educate their younger generations to continue and even push for more extreme misinterpretations of China, which lead to more and more and more misunderstanding. The west claims to have the free speech, but they only listen to themselves. They don't care what the Africans say, what the Latin Americans say, what the arabians say, and of course they don't have any patience to listen to the Chinese really. The Chinese people say something, they definitely won't believe a word, they interpret with the western.lens and emotionally over exaggerate on western media, which only lead to more misunderstandings.
Relationship is a both sides thing. If one side never wanna understand the other, there won't be any understanding.
I think the west didn't , don't and won't understand China, because there is no intention to do it.

I think this whole "west wants to make China more like west" thing is just propaganda. The West (or more bluntly, just the US), wants to subjugate China or any country that isn't already a vassal state of the US. But they can't just say this out loud. But if China acts just like Japan that bows to every demand of the US, then there will be no problem at all.
Even if China becomes western like society or an identical system, as long as China is surpassing the US, the US would still do the same as they are doing now.
The West is too arrogant
it never about culture, it about power from the start, the west do not fear China cause it is different, they dislike China because it dilute their power and force the west to offer the rest of the world a better deal. they keep shouting debt trap for example not because China will create one, but that China offering better deal will deny the west the ability to laid their debt trap to the world... it not that they don't understand China, it is that they understand what the West is... and they don't want to change.
I really wish for better China and India relationship 🇮🇳🇨🇳. As an Indian when I was doing master's in Germany I had many friends from China and other east Asians, they were wonderful people. In India they are very misunderstood. I hope it changes!!

Unfortunately it seems that your leadership (and MSM follows the leadership) uses a somewhat belligerent attitude towards China as part of their vote winning strategy. As China is not a democracy it has no need for adopting such an attitude and its leadership therefore seems more measured in this respect.
I say this as someone who likes both countries and admires both great civilisations (and who lives in the West). I too really wish you all got on better.

It depends on India media. Most people could only see China through narratives of the media and influenced by them.
I agree. That has been my experience working with Chinese origin people from Malaysia, Taiwan, mainland china and others. Indians and Chinese look different, have different food habits but at a human level there's a whole lot of commonality and we can get closer with more people to people contact.
Our media warriors chasing TRP don't help. It must also be said Indian people are influenced by the bad memories of the 1962 war and China's pak relationship.

I have to salute to Pardee Center for providing the platform for Kishore Mahbubani whose lecture may not sound pleasant to American audience's ears. This kind of openness used to be the strength of the US, but the room for a healthy debate is less and less in the US.
At minute 1:17:00 Kishore brings up the Harvard study from 2016! That's 7 years ago! Does the Chinese government don't allow anymore such studies?

China probably did such surveys but may not make it public. You might be very surprised that the CCP is very attentive to the feelings on the ground.
CCP is a very massive structure with 90 million members! Nope, it is not like the Soviet style where the communist party members spied on the masses. Many CCP members were just ordinary people with jobs like doctors, teachers, policemen, firefighters etc. But in the event of a disaster, CCP members were expected to volunteer to help in disasters. As a matter of fact, it is not surprised that many CCP members died in such rescue operations and it therefore won the approval of the people! It is unimaginable in Western societies but in China, it is a pride to be able to join the CCP. There is no special privileges to most CCP members in China as the numbers is too massive except those at the top. But they were expected to have strong social responsibility to the country. Maybe now you understand why the Chinese girl mentioned by Kishore who was the 2nd top student was disappointed that she can't join the CCP.
China had the most unique political structure that is never seen before in history. Btw there is democracy in China, but not the kind like those in the west. Some western scholars coined it as 'Vertical Democratic Meritocracy'. The people can vote for their local leaders in a district. These local leaders then vote for the next level up the hierarchy. The top leadership is then voted by about 2500+ representatives. The top leadership won their position through their performance while they served in different ministries or as governors of a state. So far the top position always goes to governors of a state. It is so because the CCP wanted the top leaders to have a better understanding of the people on the ground because governors were also promoted through the rank and file in local district offices and to have good administration experiences. Like the new Premier Li Qiang, he is the governor of Shanghai who earned the position because he is responsible for bringing Telsa to Shanghai.
Go to China and see for yourself. The support from the masses is even stronger with a leader like Xi! Xi hits hard on corruption which taints the previous administration and eradicated poverty in China before the end of his 10 years terms.
China is like a sparkling brand new country with a very good infrastructure, education and environment. Cities were connected by highspeed rails which is fast, comfortable and affordable. You can hardly see homeless people even in small cites virtual unknown to the west in China. Before covid, 120 million Chinese travelled out of China for holidays yearly and returns to China without defections! This is why I have no doubt that Xi's support from the people is even greater than those of his predecessor.

The US on the other hand, is focused on wars, proxy wars, establishing military bases around the world such that it is grossly over stretched, all with the EU dutifully following along. In doing this, the US is solely focused on maintaining its hegemony around the globe. No surprise then that things have changed dramatically for these different continents, as the US and EU seem to have lost their way through wrong priorities and poor/mediocre leaders lacking in vision.

Ambassador Mahbubani made a very good point about how the Chinese are actually more alike to the Americans than the Japanese are. Entrepreneurship, for example, comes very naturally to the Chinese, and in private enterprise, the Chinese are also very quick to abandon what doesn't work and to innovate until they find something that will sell. The Japanese, in comparison, are much more conservative and tradition-bound and slow to change.
The last question, about what should be a new framework for analysing China, is actually very good. I'm no scholar, but I would suggest, for a start, to leave behind the typical Western idea of analysis from the perspective of ideology. It ought to be very clear that the Chinese aren't as rabidly ideological as Americans are today, for example. Where else can you find an ostensibly communist party running a market economy in everything but name? The way to think about the modern Chinese communist party is to think of it as the analogue of the ancient scholastic bureaucracy of Imperial China. The Chinese have a deeply ingrained respect for scholarship and education, and have long since held learned scholars in the highest regard. That is precisely why Ambassador Mahbubani's assistant bemoaned the loss of her opportunity to qualify for CCP membership -- the Chinese today continue to think of the Party as the modern iteration of an ancient institution, which explains their high levels of trust in the bureaucracy.
So, that's one starting point for understanding modern China. I would further suggest a need to understand the Chinese mindset with regard to law and order, which stems from a tradition that is entirely alien to that of the West. Western legal tradition traces its roots to the Roman Empire. Chinese legal tradition evolved independently on its own track, and took virtually no reference from Rome. This, I suspect, lies at the heart of much of the misunderstanding between China and the West -- the two cultures have very fundamental differences in the way law is crafted and applied, and used in daily life. Bridging this difference would require looking at Chinese history with a fresh pair of eyes, free of Western assumptions, and that is understandably difficult for many Western scholars of China.
The Japanese are VERY much like the Westerners when it comes to invasion and elitism. Asian countries will never forget how Japan treated them as subhumans.

Many westerners have claimed they are experts on China affairs but they have never been to China. Especially those journalists who write negative reports and propaganda about China.

I have watched India media WION creating fake news using old video footage of bad incident happened in China. They took the old video years ago and cut and paste to create into a video clip and then report them as happened recently to entertains the viewers. How I know is I remembered the old video clips from old report that I have watched before.
Unfortunately when things are going well, people do not bother to question their mental paradigm. It is only after a painful life changing event do they gain the humility to question their beliefs. Undoubtedly such a time will be coming for the West soon....but they will continue with their present biases until then.

Asians are hard working. Seeing their standard of living much lower than the West, drives them to work even harder to improve their standard of living. As pointed out by Kishore, they are now compitent states. The determining factor for Asian growth is therefore peace and stability. All ASEAN countries should hold hands together to resist the temptation to create conflict and if possible enter peace treaties ensuring peace in the South Sea and Pacific

Prof. Mahbubani is so very correct about the ties between Asians. We are so connected in culture, political ideology, economy, and in many cases even through family ties (inter-racial marriages). The result of thousand year or more of interaction between various different Asian civilizations are still present in language, religion, political sway, food, likes-dislikes, cultural norms & taboos, and even physical feature of the peoples. Therefore, understanding a people of any particular country bounded by contemporary geo-political national boundaries really goes much deeper than modern geo-political and economic allignments.

Just saw the funniest thing ever happened in meetings between American officials and foreign government officials on TH-cam. During a meeting between the Secretary of State Blinken and a senior Vietnamese official, the American flag was nowhere to be seen!
There were US flags during the photo op outside before they went to the room and sat down. Not sure if it was an oversight or deliberate. Very strange to be honest.

Thank you Pardee Centre and Kishore, for this excellent storying of the dynamic geopolitics we are all now immersed in. Given its relatively good relationship with Russia and America, India could play a role in helping the U.S. administration to gain sufficient nous to participate in and contribute to the newly emerging multipolar world order, rather than continue to belligerently oppose it. In the unlikely event that this will happen with or without India's help, the best that India and the U.S. could hope for is to be regarded as second and third among equals; with China almost inevitably being regarded by most if not all other poles, as first among equals.
Great suggestion. But I fear the problem has festered too long. And it's not in the US ruling elite's nature to accept anything less than top dog status. I suspect it has much to do with America's sense of exceptionalism.

But I am very doubtful the political elites in the US can accept Kishore's views. US had too little history on failures to learn from, unlike Asia where they had a long history of ups and downs which they can draw experiences from. I would say that the current US politicians were unable to react to the present situation as they had never experienced a decline before.
Not to mention that the quality of the US politicians has steadily declined over the years. The current crops are unfit to be leaders in terms of intellect, ability, values and characters.
They will not accept because to do that is to commit political suicide. They're on a boulder rolling downhill and to try to stop it is to be crushed. They'll continue to push that boulder even if the end result is catastrophic.

I have listened to Kishore’s You Tube talks for over few years & always considered them negative wrt to India. Todays lecture by Prof Mehbobani has redeemed him in my eyes

India and China are two ancient civilizations whose influence across Asia and particularly Asean can clearly be seen. For thousands of years, these two giants had never had conflict, except in post colonial time, becos of the arbitrary actions of imperial Britain across north amd north east India during its rule.

The current era, Kaliyuga, is deemed the most corrupt and atrocious of all 4 eras (1.sat yuga, 2.dwapara yuga e. Treta yuga and 4. Kaliyuga). But the poet states that if one's heart is brimming with compassion, speech is adorned with honesty and he is readily available for the welfare of others, what can the Kalipuruṣa do to such an individual?! Even the most atrocious of the masters, Kali, can do nothing to shake the resolve or cause havoc in the life of such a person. The tenacity of these attributes in one's character is so strong that he can ward off the worst effects brought about by the yuga-dharma (nature of the era).
If one is compassionate to his fellow beings, the happiness that the giver and the receiver get is immense.
If there is honesty in one's words, he has nothing to hide or defend.
If one is readily available to do welfare for others, then there is no ounce of selfish motive in him.
How can such a person not be happy? When one is internally happy, what can anyone do to deter his well being or contentment?!!
May we all win over Kalipuruṣa's atrocities, develop these traits and make the world a happier peaceful, hormonious and quiet serene and tranquil place!
USA has the trait aiding and abetting as a war mongerer. History has the record of it.

I said it before in other channel, but I believe this provide some good insight to views of this channel too. The irrational banning of Tik-Tok in US is nothing about national security, but everything about money. Because 1) advertise income of Tik-Tok outnumbered any top-grossing gaming or app for 2022 Q4 and 2) app revenue market share of Tik-Tok is the greater than Instagram and Facebook combine. Just follow where the money goes one can easily figure out why US legislators are harassing and threating Tik-Tok to change hand to US buyer or face sanction or ban. The Chinese government, however, had also place regulation NOT allowing tech company to sell shareholding without prior government approval first.

Globalisation will necessarily effect greater dissemination of cultural understanding and absorption. That, is one key aspect the US is scared of with its monotheistic upbringing, as if Islam is about to exert a greater influence for the last 2000 years. In the meantime, China through its thousands of years of history always had a pluralistic philosophical and theological development with a mix of Confucianism, Taoism, Buddhism, Islamism and the list goes on, absorbing and mixing along the way.

Will India and China overcome their distrust of each other over the border disputes? Absolutely! Why?
As India grows, its need for huge markets grow with it. And a humongous market is just next door!! That's impossible to resist. The borders will not become a source of contention but opportunity to intersect and connect.
With a common history of being victims of colonialism, India and China do not have predatory foreign policies. Co-existence has been their traditions.
The other reason is the BRI that China is undertaking. These infrastructures will also serve India to link up with central Asian nations and beyond! The Eurasian economic zone will explode with India and China in it!

When India needs more markets for its huge exports and China is just next door! 4. When India realizes it needs its own social media. 5. When the West begins to talk about human rights (esp religion) in India.
Frankly, China can't be bothered. China will just be guarding its sovereignty.
