    1971 saw a completely new Dodge Charger. Out was the long, sharp, boxy Charger and “in” was the new curvier model for ‘71. The new design featured a more pronounced long nose / short deck look, and although it was about 2 inches shorter than the 68-70 model, it was also wider than it’s predecessor. The design remains controversial, with the interestingly up-swept pillarless side window design and fastback-ish rear roofline. A new bumper design split the nose in half, and our Charger Super Bee features a clean look with hidden headlights.
    You could order all kinds of engines in your 1971 Charger, but our featured Super Bee is fitted with the one everyone talks about… the 425 HP 426 Hemi V8, and it’s coupled to a 4-speed manual transmission. And while a Hemi Orange ‘71 Super Bee with a 426 and a stick might be tops on any muscle car wish list, it’s the top of this one that makes it even more special.
    If you’ve never seen a factory installed power sunroof like this one, you’re not alone. Chrysler didn’t sell very many of the nearly $500 options, which mandated the full vinyl top as well. When you add in the code E74 426 Hemi engine at over $880.00, and you were looking at an expensive Super Bee back in ‘71 even before you start adding the rest of the options. Which do you think had lower production, the Hemi or the Sun Roof? We’ll answer that one later.
    But if you DID spring for all these goodies, you got one heck of a ride, man. Ours features a sprawling white bench seat interior, complete with power windows, a 150 MPH speedo, 8000 RPM tach, and a pistol grip shifter for workin’ the 4-speed gearbox. Looking out over the long hood is a trip from any angle, as the Ramcharger scoop comes to life letting the 2 Carter AFB 4-barrels fill the Hemi with air. We’re envisioning a clear day, turning up the Music Master AM radio, hitting the power overhead switch to let the sun shine in, and dumping the clutch to let the 490 ft. lbs. of torque launch us straight into the 5th dimension.
    These cars drive really nicely when in this kind of condition. Power steering and brakes ease the driver effort, and the heavy duty clutch is quite tolerable, even in traffic. The famous Chrysler torsion bar front suspension is taught but comfortable, with a sway bar to keep things on the level in the turns, and the 15 inch rally wheels and Goodyear Polyglas GTs hold the road. A Dana 60 rear axle can stand up to the torque as the leaf springs try to hold it in place. These cars have some of the coolest exhaust tips ever… many call them Machine Gun tips, but the red and chrome ends are officially called “Exhaust Bright Tips”. We call them awesome.
    This is a love it or hate it design, and we’re leaning towards the love it, especially drenched in Hemi Orange with the white vinyl top and blacked-out hood to break it all up. The thin black stripe looks like the car just crossed the finish line with a black ribbon wrapped around the base of the windshield. Dual painted racing mirrors look cool, too.
    All tolled, there were 5,054 1971 Super Bees built. 22 came equipped with the 426 Hemi engine, and only 9 of those were 4-speed manual cars. Coincidentally, there were also 9 known power sunroof 1971 Super Bees built with any of the available engines. But how many Hemi 4-speed cars had sunroofs? I’m not sure, but this one in the Brothers Collection is the Super Bee’s Knees, for sure.

    My Stepfather had a 1970 SuperBee in Plum Crazy with white interior. I got to drive it twice after getting my license in 1971 before he traded it. One time while he was driving we hit 140 mph. Mom was NOT happy. 😂

    Oh yeah! I always thought the 1971-1974 Dodge Charger's were the best looking Charger's ever and they're my favorite generation too! My grandfather had a '73 Charger SE with a 318, 3 speed automatic transmission back in 1980 and it was a nice car as well! But he sold it in early 1988 unfortunately.

    I love the (power!) sunroof on the Charger. Honestly, having to choose a rare engine or the sunroof option on a car like this, I'd go with the sunroof. I used to own a 69 Mach 1 on which the previous owner had a sunroof butchered in. Back then I loved it, though it leaked like crazy and the wind howled through its cracks. But I thought it was so cool. Nobody would do a thing like that today, but back in the 70s and 80s, there were no limits to what you did with your car. Great video of the week, once again, thanks Keven, thanks Brothers.

    In your teaser on facebook the headline said Plymouth Super Bee. By the time the actual video was published you had it fixed. But it might be worthwhile pointing out the fact that this is indeed a Dodge Super Bee. Not a Charger, but a Super Bee. Prior to 71 the Super Bee was a dressed up Coronet, which was not produced in 71. I don't think this car has the word Charger anywhere on it. Great episode. Love your vids.

      1971 Super Bees had a "Charger Dodge Division" emblem on the right rear corner of the trunk lid (just to the left of the Super Bee decal). This emblem can be seen on the car in the video.

    Super nice, I believe that vinyl roofs were added to cars with sunroofs so a lot of time wasn't spent on the assembly line doing finish body work at that time. Plymouth Superbirds all had vinyl roofs to hide bodywork as well.

    • @johntechwriter
      @johntechwriter 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Sunroofs exist purely as a profit source for the manufacturer, who charges a fortune for them. Seriously, do you know anybody who uses their sunroof regularly? Or at all? They just create a draft and mess up everybody's hair. And after a few years, they leak! And finally, that big hole in the roof is a big negative on chassis stiffness. Not what you want when you've got a hemi under the hood!

    I had a good friend that owned a B5 blue 71 Hemi Charger Super Bee.
    Bench seat with an auto on the column.Not sure if his had the sun roof option its been many years ago.
    Not to discount your total 22 71 Hemi cars built but IIRC there were only 15 Hemi Charger Super Bees produced.

    • @Komet163B
      @Komet163B 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      1971 Hemi Charger production = 85 cars. 22 Hemi Super Bees (13 TorqueFlite, 9 Four-Speed), 63 Hemi R/Ts (33 TorqueFlite, 30 Four-Speed).

  • @mynameis9057
    @mynameis9057 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    All of that goodness, but I just don't get the bench seat! The sunroof, the Hemi the air grabber hood,i don't remember seeing any shaker hoods on the 3rd gen Chargers,so I wonder if it ever was an option. But a bench seat? Really? Oh well, the rest is aces anyway, so who cares,just rug that puppy,open the top and find a nice country road to have a spectacular cruise on. I say the roof is rarer. Great stuff guys, thanks again! ▪☆☆☆▪

    I noticed the super bee logo on the front guards in different position is this normal.
    On the p/s its to the front of the Super Bee lettering.
    On the d/s it's behind the Super Bee lettering.
    Just doesn't look right one would think it would be to the front of the lettering on both sides.
    Otherwise another tough mind blowing Charger, you just keep coming up with better better muscle cars every week.
    Always look forward to every episode.

    My guess is the Sun Roof was lower production in 1971 Chargers than the Hemi (which was 85 cars). I've seen the Sun Roof production estimated to be as low as only 9 cars. But that seems unrealistically low.. or is it correct? Maybe the 9 is for the number of 71 Super Bees with a Sun Roof. I wonder how many 1971 Chargers had a Sun Roof?

    Praising bias ply tires is a bit ridiculous...

      You need to know how to drive a car with bias ply !Like real men did in the 60-70

      Landing in a ditch or wrapping your car around a tree was a popular sport back then.

    Wow, such a cheesy follow-up to the magnificent '68-'70 Chargers. The basic lines are okay, but all that garish chrome on the front and back ends, and that horrific vinyl roof (did it have to be white?), make this car an eyesore.

    This car and the Ford Talladega in my opinion are absolutely hideous looking. I remember when they came out and just laughed at how ugly they are. Truly ruined a classic. Of course you can't tell how ugly they are when driving. FUGLY.
