52yrs old self taught drummer, never played with a band. Tried learning this for decades, could only come up with foot, floor tom scenario. Was convinced no dubbing, or tricks recording was done. Thank you, solved.... this still doesn't allow me to do correctly. Still nice to know. Cheereo
Some years ago, I saw a Van Halen tribute band called "Eruption", and their drummer was Scott Travis. You know, the guy from Racer X and Judas Priest? He killed that intro!
Wow super cool that i was even included in this! My Hot for Teacher cover seems like ages ago! I was 14 when I did that. I think I might need to revisit it and redo it now that I have mics and I'd like to think I've improved in the last year and a half. 😀 I noticed you recommended having age in the title, would love to know how people feel about this? Anyway super cool video and thank you so much for including me and for the kind words! ✌💜🥁
Please do redo this song I love your channel and covers and it would be really cool to see you do another 1 year (maybe more) later cover like you did with Metallicas one

Follow your dreams and help others follow yours!
Great video. I had heard in 1984 they mic'd up Alex's super-car rather than a Harley. It's hard to say as the band just lets rumors soar to legendary status with little explanation (brown M & Ms for instance). Four kicks for show. There were additional kicks on the front of the batter kicks with flexible tubes that could be stretched to adjust the fundamental kick tone to the arenas. Grateful to see 1984 and 5150 tours at the Cow Palace.
According to Ted Templemen's new autobiography. The first several seconds of the Hot For Teacher drum intro were recorded from the "loping" exhaust notes of EVH's V12 Lamborghini.
guy number 4 he had great time and did the herta's in the beginning with the kick drum. Congratulations to all the drummers for getting out there and doing it.
Alex van halen used Simmons electronic drums to achieve this. The kick and toms are basically just pitched up/down versions of each other which is why it sounds like "four bass drums" were being used. The "four bass drums" actually refers to his live setup, which was mostly for looks. The hertas are played using his hands on a "floor tom" of sorts electronic drum pad, though they stop when he starts playing the wooden tom. I suggest you find the original drum track, with the drums isolated to kick, snare, cymbals, and toms. You can solo the toms and remove the shuffle beat bass drums and find that this is entirely possible to do. "Guy #2" and/or Josh Gallagher pretty much plays it spot on, along with actually using electronic drums.
I believe when Van Halen played on that tour Alex had 4 kicks and had a couple multi connected beaters. 2 sets with a couple linkages going out to the outer kicks.
The outer kicks had no pedals or beaters. They were connected with large conduits in an attempt to magnify the amount of bass coming off the kick drums. Like passive radiators in a speaker enclosure. Also 'cuz it looked outrageous. Alex never played the intro solo live the way it sounded on the album.
It’s all Al on drums, I saw him do it live in front of my eyes (before you were born) on the 84 tour. He starts playing hertas on a Simmons pad, followed by the bass drums coming in underneath with a fast shuffle rhythm. Which is reminiscent of an idling motorcycle. Al then plays some tom accents over the top to make things more interesting. When he breaks into the groove, he plays an inverted swing rhythm on the ride bell. Modern drummer even released a book all about Alex and confirmed this.
Mia, not just for this part but because she writes her own material and can play every instrument in the band, and mixes and edits her own material, all while being in full-time education. Amazing and very creative young lady, and highly in demand for guest appearances, session work all around Nashville, and you gotta be pretty damned good to get noticed in that neck of the woods.
Guy #2 has been one of my favorite TH-cam drummers for quite some time. Him and his brother(?) are quite possibly the closest thing to a VH revival you can get. His appreciation for Alex Van Halen runs incredibly deep- the main reason for him using triggered pads for his rendition of the solo is because AVH used electronic pads for his kick on 1984 (as well as the following tour) and then right across the board switched to electronic drum pads for toms on the 5150 record (and following tour afterwords). From the triggered pads right down to the bronze paiste cymbals, his dedication to replicating the famous Van Halen drum sound is a valiant effort in of itself. I choose him overall despite the “jazz metal” ride section and the high pitched kick sample. Killer drummer, as well as his brother being a killer guitarist!
Love this drum solo part, liked the 7 year old at 13 as the deeper base sound reminds me of the original . The recording first reminded me of a super dragster race car at idle . Great video.
You're over-complicating the breakdown. It's much simpler than people think. You have to basically incorporate the dotted eighth ride ostinato that he plays once he goes to the bell... but on the floor tom as the kicks are shuffling and the left hand moves to the 10" tom. Alex and Ed were the sons of jazz musician so they naturally incorporated the swing into their music but in a modern rock style. The dude at the 12:30ish mark is playing it how I'm trying to describe. I've been playing the song for 30 years off and on in various bands and have played and lead sang it the past 15 or so. Thanks for taking the time to put this cool video together and keeping the rock alive! 🥁🎶🤟🍻
As an owner of a shovelhead I would say don’t get one unless you enjoy being stuck on the side of the road almost as much of the time that you ride. But it does turn heads when it runs
Great video, and that intro sure has been a mystery, too! I had heard/read that the Hertas were actually played on a *roto* tom, however I reckon it sounds more like a Simmons drum, as do the bass drums. And so Guy #2 actually wasn't that far off by using e-drums, too :-)
The recording doesn't have 4 bass drums.....the intro is played on a Simmons pad with a really low floor tom tuning. The rest is the bass drum shuffle and a mix of the Simmons pad and an acoustic tom....and it is possible to play.
The beginning of the song was a recording of a Lamborghini engine (it belonged to one of the Van Halens but I don’t remember which one) then the drums fade in after about 5 seconds, according to Ted Templeman.
Avery is awesome. I have followed him for years now. Mia is the 13 year old girl and she is a fantastic musician as well. Yes guy one was good but he should be, he is an adult. He has had years to work on his craft. I am just amazed to watch these kids grow up on youtube!!!
I thought all the drummers were fantastic, but I do talk to Mia Morris occasionally and I have to support, so I'm going with her cover as being the best.
This has been my favorite video of yours since I started watching. I love the breakdown of drum parts from famous music, especially when it's complex or has a 'gotcha' section like this one with 4 kick drums. I'd love to see more videos like this.
Owen Davey is the best at Hot For Teacher. Not only does he totally nail the drum intro, he also does Eddie's guitar flawlessly and the bass guitar as well. Dude is a machine.
You CAN play 4 kick drums! You use a binary pedal, meaning that when you step it kicks, when you retreat it kicks. In essence, it kicks twice when you step and release. Both feet, 2 kick drums a foot, a binary pedal with a hit for each kick drum. I've seen it done.
Guy #2 plays it exactly like the record (ride bell aside). Alex played the hertas on a simmons pad to his right triggering a low kick drum sound. Then his double pedals trigger a different simmons kick sound for the shuffle. Right at the start you can faintly hear his sticks click on the edge of the simmons pad or something. No overdubbing, all live performed. Thats why the herta kick drum starts dropping hits once the toms come in. He DID use the simmons pad to play the intro on the original 1984 tour, theres a very crunchy video of it on youtube, but now he just skips the intro entirely.
I watched on little drumming video on Facebook and now I see them all the time. I sing and play guitar, why do I keep watching these? Oh wait, it’s all this god dammed talent! Nice work.
Do you want to know the real secret to the Alex Van Halen “ four bass drums “ ? It is a second beater on each pedal with a very loose cam and drive that lags behind the primary beater . Or so my drummer told me
I find it amazing I can still enjoy music without understand any of the technical theory behind a drum sound. Sort of like enjoying the site of a beautiful woman without understanding the role played by various genes that gave her the outstanding looks.
Awesome video, my kids watch that “6 year old who is now 13” kid. I think he did the best job tbh. Side note: it’s wild how many (non-drumming) Van Halen fans have no clue the song was meant to sound like a shovelhead. I nerd out when ever it gets mentioned, this video was dope,, thank you!

I believe the hurtas were played on a Simmons pad, with sticks, on the kick drum setting. Then kick shuffle pattern was played on the Simmons kick, and the same setting.
Always wondered how Alex played that part. I thought he was using specialized kick pedals, two bass drum pedals and each pedal has two beaters so each kick gives like a flam effect. You can probably tell I'm not a drummer, but that's how I had it in my imagination at least
I don't know who you think you are but I can tell you that you play drums better than I ever will, heck, i can barely play the radio. Not a musician but enjoyed this vid. thanks
I was a tiny bit interested and saw this is normally about drumline-style drums. Then there was Van Halen. Then there was Meshuggah. Now I'm subscribed.
The first 6 seconds of the song are in fact the 1984 album engineer Don Landry’s recording the tail pipe of Eddie Van Halen’s Lamborghini Diablo idling in his garage ... it is not drums. THEN Don programmed the Simmons kick drum to replicate the sound the best he could. This is why the intro is not actually in perfect time.
So, there I was, minding my own Bee's Wax ( Shout-out to Steven Sassafras VI), walking around Fort Washington, when I checked my email.... Oh no! 39 minutes late! Guy #1 got it done! On the album, Alex starts the Hurtas on a low Simmons tom sound and brings in the shuffle with the acoustic double bass.
it was a simmons bass drum. all of the kit except for the snare and cymbals were simmons pads
alex used rototoms for the recording of 1984. eddie misremembered when interviewed and said it was all simmons, but that was 5150 not 1984

@@roadglider00 whatever , electro puss drummer lmao would not make my top 50 drummers all time
That was so entertaining. Thank you for putting this together!
Not a musician but enjoyed this vid. thanks
Guy #1 is Aaron Edgar... cool channel
I was a tiny bit interested and saw this is normally about drumline-style drums. Then there was Van Halen. Then there was Meshuggah. Now I'm subscribed.
The first 6 seconds of the song are in fact the 1984 album
engineer Don Landry’s recording the tail pipe of Eddie Van Halen’s Lamborghini Diablo idling in his garage ... it is not drums. THEN Don programmed the Simmons kick drum to replicate the sound the best he could. This is why the intro is not actually in perfect time.
Wrong. The lambo was put in the bridge of panama. Lambos also don’t sound like that.
@@jonhopkins9380 correct! Dude must have never heard a Lamborghini lol!
Diablo wasn't produced until 1990...
I enjoyed each one's performance for different reasons, but based on delivering a performance with complete accuracy as written, I agree with you.
Maybe you could cover people playing the under pressure solo?
So, there I was, minding my own Bee's Wax ( Shout-out to Steven Sassafras VI), walking around Fort Washington, when I checked my email.... Oh no! 39 minutes late! Back in the early '70's, while at Plattsburgh AFB, Bill's Boom Operator had a Harley! Such a sweet sound! Thanks for explaining the Shovelhead sound... Never realized it until you mentioned it in this video. Now, I will always hear it! 😉🥁🤭😁
the first girl and why isn't sina on there i heard her play it and she nailed it
at 6:45 his tempo control was good because he was playing with a metronome. you can see it in the overhead shot
Marching drum set?

Love this video! How have I never heard of a 'herta'?
I believe Alex Van Halen”s Kit from 1984 has special double double bass pedals with 4 bass drums.
