A few weeks later I went to DC with friends to go to the museums and such and my one friend refused to sit in the front or back cars, only in the middle. The image of the operator in the cab at 6:48 is the cab of a 7000 series rail car. Those cars did not enter service until 2015.
One of the solutions to the used to correct the parasitic oscillation issue in the Potomac River tunnels in 2005 was to increase the gain in the track circuit amplifier.

Luckily, he wasn't. I mean I love WMATA and all, but we still use our good old 1970's ATO technology that came around when the system opened in 1976.

    For context:
At the time, the classic-style Metro train was usually a combination of Rohr (1000), Breda (2000, 3000, 4000), CAF (5000), and Alstom (6000) models. However, the 1000, 4000, and 5000 series trains were replaced by the more modern Kawasaki 7000 Series in the late 2010s. This is due to the 1000 Series being old and the 4000 and 5000 series being unreliable. The 2000 and 3000 Series were upgraded and refurbished to 6000 Series specs around 2005.
The new 7000 Series train has more comfortable seats and automated announcements. Hitachi will make a similar model (the 8000 Series) to replace the rest of the classic models.

WMATA announced a policy of no longer placing 1000 series trains at the end of train consists to prevent the telescoping collision cause they were the weakest car structurally. All of 1000 series cars were put in the middle of train sets and served for another 8 years until retirement in 2017.

There's another important lesson to take from this crash.
When it happened, the comments on the websites of the Washington Post, WTOP, WJLA, and other local news providers were filled with absolutely brutal venom towards the conductor of Train 112, the overtaking train. So many people -- most people, really -- assumed she was in the wrong, wasn't paying attention, etc. There was an awful lot of stuff along the lines of "I'm glad she's dead" and "she got off easy". Then, the investigation made it clear that no part of the accident was her fault, in fact she lost her life trying to lessen the severity of an unavoidable collision for which she was blameless. I saw not one person say "Wow, I was totally wrong," let alone voice any regret. She deserved better.
The moral of the story: when something bad happens, if you can't swear that you know all the pertinent details for certain, shut your fscking mouth and walk away from the goddamned computer until you do.

A little editing suggestion: Try muting or turning down background sounds when you are talking and watch your videos all the way through to make sure the viewer will be able to hear you. Also, when you put text in your videos, make sure you can comfortably read each slide before its set time runs out. It's really annoying to the viewer when a slide disappears before they can read it because they have to pause the video and back it up to read the slide.

This video was much closer to home than all your others, literally, I vividly remember when this accident happened. For years people refused to sit in the front car or didn’t ride the Metro at all. Also I can’t believe it has been ten years it feels like it was just three. Something else, I was always told it was a head on collision not like a Casey Jones accident where a moving train hits a stationary one, was that just bad media or what.
P.S. you got something wrong about the retirement of the older car classes cause I still see them in June of 2019 running on the metro lines.

Don't think that crashes don't exist. This train right here was about to reach it's destination, but it crashed. Moral for this comment I made is don't be an optimist when a bad accident just happened.

I was 9 years old on vacation in DC with my mom, I was at the Smithsonian museum of natural history and my mom really wanted to go back to my aunts place. I was begging to see the hope diamond again and so we took the extra time and did. Afterwards, we made our way down to the Metro station, I was excited as ever to ride in the front seat and watch. When I got there we waited and waited and then learned that there had been a crash. The train directly before the one I took had been the one in this accident. The one I would’ve been in the very front seat of. I still struggle to get on subways, I always ride in the middle, and I still feel very lucky to be alive. I still remember my aunt calling my mom sobbing because she saw the news and she said “I was so scared you weren’t going to pick up.”

Seeing the hope diamond again saved your life and your mom's life. I was on the metro several times in 1993 when I visited DC and I was not comfortable on no matter where I sat. RIP to the ones who died that day

@@shaunstrasser1 It’s kind of ironic given the diamonds reputation with bad luck. I was just in DC in November and was still a little nervous.

After this incident, WMATA began complete manual operations with a speed cap at a 59 mph. The big factor here was telescoping, which you will not likely see in a collision in continental rail network because locomotives are designed with anticlimbers. Cab cars, EMUs, and DMUs usually lack anticlimbers, although the WMATA coaches have a weak anticlimber consisting of the end-door walkway.

What is the difference between manual and automatic operation modes? I haven't heard of any other trains that use a system like that.

When I lived and worked in the D.C. area, I would ride in the seat on the opposite side of the driver's position and look through the cab at the front view. I knew it would be the most unsafe passenger position in the train, but I did it anyway.

I hated this story when it happened. I work for MTA New York City Subway as a Train Service Supervisor. At the time of this, I was a brand new conductor, and I served as a C/R for four and a half years. I was also a train operator for six and a half years. The reason why I say that I hate this story is because when it first happened, the Washington Metro did EVERYTHING in their power to try and place blame on the operator. They leaked that she was on prescription drugs, and so the press speculated that she was high or drunk while operating. They dragged her name through the mud, even though she was NEVER at fault, and they knew it. She was a 40 something year old mother of two, and I'm sure her kids had to witness all the crap that they spewed about their mom, especially since she was no longer alive to defend herself. I remember saying to my coworkers that the way they are treating her could happen to any one of us. Now, in our system, they have the Automatic Train Operation and CBTC (Communications Based Train Control) on two of our lines, the L and the 7 lines. They are also installing the system on the Queens Boulevard corridor, the exact same system which caused this horrific accident.

Today marks the 12th anniversary of this collision and hopefully now with many trains around America with ptc installed we won't have another repeat of a collision like what happened in Washington, D.C. 12 years ago today.

But due to summer occurring, I transitioned to Piedmont Middle School in Piedmont, FL for 6th grade since this was my last year in Meadowbrook Elementary in Starlight City.
