Harrow and Wealdstone train disaster 67 years later

  • 1 train crashing is bad enough, 2 trains colliding is even worse, but a 3 train crash is nothing more than a terrible catastrophe as was the case at Harrow and Wealdstone.
This may of been rushed together due to me totally forgetting to do this thanks to all the stress October has put me through. This also had to go under a script rewrite at the last minute during editing due to me not liking the original (hence the narration clips sounding different in some parts) But I think it's worth it.

As a modern day UK railwayman, who lives in one of the cities involved in this accident I find a few things interesting in this video.
    1. For an American, your pronunciation of Ruislip was outstanding!
    2. Despite that and without wanting to be perceived as having a go . . .
Wealdstone is pronounced 'Wield (as in to wield a sword) - stun'
    3. AWS and its Successor TPWS are now widespread across UK railways, and had the US implemented similar systems (and safeguards associated with those systems such as Morpeth boards and driver reminder appliances) crashes such as the recent Frankford Jn. Incident and the more historical Silver springs collision would've almost certainly been avoided.
    4. It's of note that another train was named 'City of Glasgow' many years later - this too was involved in a crash and was, infact, written off. On Feburary 23rd, 2007 - five year old Virgin Trains Pendolino no. 390033 'City of Glasgow' hit an improperly maintained set of points at Grayrigg in Cumbria, North west England. The train derailed, travelling at approximately 90mph and toppled down an embankment. 1 passenger sadly died, but 12 years later it remains (touch wood) the last incident on UK railways in which a fare paying passenger lost their life.
I'd be interested to see you cover the Grayrigg derailment - but I would cover it together with the Potters Bar and Hatfield crashes aswell. All three were down to poor track maintenance (the first two, poor maintenance of switches and the 3rd was poor rail condition leading to a rail shattering under the speeding train).

Sadly since writing this, two years ago, there has been another fatal rail crash in the UK. A driver, conductor and passenger killed at Carmont in Aberdeenshire in August 2020 due to their train colliding with a landslip (due to an improperly built and maintained drainage channel) and derailing at 75mph.

I sometimes call this disaster The British Railways Great Train Wreck of 1952 given how catastrophic it looked and how big the wreckage looked at that station.
It's very sad to what had happened in this accident that not many people would know about, but I doubt for sure the AWS would've worked on steam locomotives; given how it would've cost a lot to install in them all at the time and the difficulties it would have been like in today's world.
True Fact: (For those who don't know) 46202 'Princess Anne' was a successful experimental turbine locomotive in it's early years on the LMS before it was rebuilt 2 months before the tragic wreck. 71000 'Duke Of Gloucester', the only Standard Class 8 of it's kind, is said to have the original salvaged pieces from 'Princess Anne' after she was scrapped.

This was a rather shameful accident. To make things more disturbing, I’ve read that some witnesses remember seeing bodies flying through the air. Also the fact that the station clock stopped at the exact time of the accident: 8:19am. That should be an interesting concept for a horror movie. And one thing is worth pointing out, 4 Jubilee locomotives and 3 Princess Coronation Pacifics have been preserved.

I've heard much of this accident. It's crazy how much destruction happened in such a short time and that the force of the collision was enough to freeze time on the station clocktower. If this accident wouldn't have happened, that would have been two speeding express trains barreling through the station at once while the commuter train was beginning to set out. That sound effect you used was brutal, but fitting for what happened. Once again, an example of it being cheaper to have the accident than install new safety equipment. Sure AWS was in it's early years but something is better than nothing
