    the "pistons" inside shock absorbers often have valves with "springs", regulating the speed or oil flow in both directions.

    • @simonallan9941
      @simonallan9941 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Yes from my experience most are designed to travel downwards faster than coming back up, to prevent the bounce back/return effects, so passengers feel the drop and slow rise, instead of updown motion discomfort 😮

    Great segment !
    A future design, perhaps....Instead of holes for the by-pass, use an external tube with a valve, so the shock can be adjusted.

    Best to put an exterior oil exchange line in for custom shocks. Then you can put a valve of some kind to regulate the transfer rate.

    Having the compression damping the same as the extension is unusual for a road car. Drag race shocks for the rear are sometimes noted as "50/50" meaning they have the same damping in both directions.

    You guys never DAMPEN my day it’s always a SHOCK to see what you have planned next

  • @pdtech4524
    @pdtech4524 ปีที่แล้ว +14

    I built some shocks for my Tamiya Super sabre RC buggy, they came with various pistons with different size and number of holes, some small, some larger.
    Smaller holes allow less oil to pass through making the shock stiffer. Larger holes make the oil pass through quicker making them softer.
    You can of course put thicker or thinner viscosity oil in the shocks to really fine tune them.
    So you could have a small hole in the piston with a thinner oil to give a softer ride than a thicker oil would give with the same piston.

    • @jwalster9412
      @jwalster9412 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Or make bypass shocks.

  • @kleetus92
    @kleetus92 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    You can also add a port to put some gas pressure in the shock... it keeps the oil from foaming. Usually uses Nitrogen, at not that high as pressure, like 80-100 psi or so.

    I would fit some kind of one way valve on half the holes on the downward stroke of the shocks, so it will have a harder time returning back up, like a "reed valve" system. I'm not sure on the up-down ratio, but that would be a start to getting the movement up and down velocity not being equal.

    I think that they are supposed to travel down much easier than coming up, as I noticed from the new trail bike shocks I fitted to the rear of my Special 650 road bike, my girlfriend was not happy, because she enjoyed the bouncing going through Brisbane city crossroads 😂 a good test is to push hard down on the front or back of the car, and release immediately so it should go back up and then down to stop at original position, but if it moves in more than 2strokes after release, then it needs shocks replaced.

They seem to be so new, I could only find research papers about them, and I still don't know how they work, just that they use some sort of solid-state technology to dampen shocks. Well, anyway, if you decide to try the idea, I'd love to see how it works.
