No, the bike didn't blow up. Before this video shot, someone dropped the bike in such a way that it knocked a coolant hose loose. The issue was taken care of and the bike ran fine afterward.
I wasn’t a demo it was a slow riding competition. An earlier drop on a bike with no engine bars had pushed a radiator hose against an exhaust pipe. The result a small hole and a lot of steam. Bike was up and running on the trail the next day.
I thought the slow riding competition was part of the program to demo the new model and that this was one of the official demo bikes. Perhaps whoever was responsible for safety should have inspected the bike correctly after the drop, this could have been dangerous at speed.
@@motorvelo Perhaps but I doubt that this engine would receive sufficient cooling from Air flow alone and if it was mine I certainly wouldn't run it without coolant, even at speed. BTY congrats on the RBLR, that's a tough day.
@@irishflyer6377 I meant normal riding with coolant. The RBLR was a great day, as long as you made the right plan and rode to that plan. I’ll certainly do it again.
If a simple drop can press the radiator hose into the exhaust system and melt it, maybe that's not the best layout for an ADV? For everyone crying it's not fair to Harley I would say, would you be okay with this happening on the side of the trail after a minor off? Sure a set of crash bars could prevent it, but so could a more thoughtful cooling system layout.
I have a 15 year old DRZ400 with no crash bars that’s been dropped in every direction, more than once but when you pick it up it goes again. I know many adventure bikes are really just road bikes but the designers should at least try to make them trail capable. This bike had no external damage.
I have a 2022 Pan America Special with factory crash guards- couldn't be happier with the bike! There have been 125 or so small changes and tweaks to the bike since it's release, just like all new release bikes- including the GS. Bmw has made thousands of changes since 2013 R1200GS release.
I’m glad you inspected the bike and confirmed the fault, I didn’t have the opportunity on the day. Was the problem a failure to check the bike after the earlier fall? It’s important for safety to always check a bike after any damage.

Someone commented below that it was the exhaust burning a water pipe and that it was just steam from water spraying onto the exhaust. It was being used in a slow riding race by different riders for at least an hour so perhaps it overheated? Don’t know any more then the video shows really.
Mine blew up after 2200 miles and Harley will not warranty it even though no warning lights came on did an over temperature warning light the shape of a triangle with an! Come on during this incident on the demo

Even though the Pan-Am bests the BMW GS in several places on the spec sheet, the GS still walks away from it in every real-world test. The KTM will of course roast them both in raw performance.

There’s No denying the bike is having issues, expected for a first edition but the big KTM smokes the PA by every technical metric

I’m not sure BMW is always any better, I’ve seen them disabled by simple falls as well.
BMW is to busy sabotaging their own bikes with faults they charge their customers top dollar to fix.
