    One of the questions that I get asked a lot is whether the Canon M50 is good for video or not, especially whether that 4K is usable. In this video I share my experiences after using this camera for several months for vlogging, travel and even some corporate work.

      The M50 is a glorified toy for budget minded bedroom warriors. Too limited w regard to 4k. You pay for what you get. Invest a bit more and upgrade.

    Wasn’t the flicker due to shooting in NTFS 24fps, change the video setting to PAL 25fps, that will eliminate the flicker as the lights across Europe are 50 htz.

  • @M1ke_A
    @M1ke_A 4 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    Auto focus in 4k is poor... you can see it hunting for almost 10 seconds beginning @ 1:39 of the video. This camera is great when filming at FHD, just not very well at 4k.

    The glass you mount on these cameras makes a huge difference to the results attainable, as can be seen here. 24/60 fps will always produce flicker under mains powered lighting in uk because of our 50hz mains frequency by the way. Shutter speed has no bearing on it.

      It's not too bad tbh, but that autofocus is really annoying - If someone is keeping an eye on it with Manual focus and not moving it around too quickly (rolling shutter) than you have something useable (ish) haha.

      @KaiCreative  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks for the question Jorginho, I’d say that this camera is pretty much versatile for most situations, like most cameras a lot will depend on the lens that you end up using, although I reckon that with decent light the 15-45mm kit lens will probably handle this well. (:

    Really good video! Love how you mixed up the shots so much and showed some great footage from the M50. I ordered an M50 but then cancelled to buy a Sony A6300, think I was swayed towards Sony as I already have a Sony A7II and lots of Sony Lenses. Was a very tough decision choosing between them and then there was also the Panasonic G7 which looked good.

    • @KaiCreative
      @KaiCreative  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I’ve never personally experienced any issues with my mic jack tbh. I have had issues recently with sound on my 5D mark IV - until I realised that it wasn’t the camera but the extension cable that I was using to connect to my mic - my advice would be try a different mic first to eliminate that as an issue - also try blowing out the jack to clear any dust that might be in there causing connection issues. Otherwise it might be time for a visit to the Canon repair shop 👌

    The "crop factor" is a nonsense. The only thing that matters is FOV ( field of view ) . This emphasis on crop factor is absolutely pointless.
    What matters is whether you can frame the shot and get the depth of field and exposure that you want with the lens that you have on the camera.

    Hello Kai Song. I have been wondering how to make 'smooth' slow motion clip. All I know, as the Internet says, is to slow 60fps to 24fps, which is the number 0.4 or 40% (depending on the software used). I use Magix Vegas Pro and did exactly that. I thought Vegas Pro is shitty so I tried Cyberlink PowerDirector, the result is still the same. In PowerDirector, there is a setting to enable extrapolation, and I did it, same result.
    What I understood is there is no special effect (Optical Flow, and whatnot) required/added if shot in 60fps or higher fps, merely slow it down by punching in the number. Sadly, I do not experience the same. I cannot afford to go for power-hungry effects such as Optical Flow because I am not using a powerful computer. Even simple slow motion effect setting takes a loooooooooong time to render even if it is a few seconds clip. I do not even edit nor colour-correct my clips; I make the M50 do all that I need for me in-camera by heavily tweaking its Picture Style and white balance on the spot. This is only so much that I can do, however. Magic Lantern is not stable for M50, may need to wait for a very long time for a properly made one as it is not a paid thing.

    • @baqcasanke
      @baqcasanke 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Shoot in 60fps and drop it into a 24p timeline. Set clip attributes to play at 24p. Done. No special effects or processing. Your software may be different tho. You literally just shoot in a higher fps than you play the clip back at. No “rendering” required

    • @realchristopher4334
      @realchristopher4334 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@baqcasanke I did exactly what you mentioned, as I already said in my comment/question. Maybe unclear. Let me rephrase: A clip shot at 60fps is dragged into a 24fps timeline, the said clip attribute (property in my case) is set to play at 0.4 which directly translate to play at 24fps. After all this the clip still appears slightly choppy, not fluid.
      You may or may not say "move slowly". I have already moved very slowly. If I moved any slower then I probably do not even need to shoot at 60fps! LMAO!
      As for 'rendering', it is needed when saving to a new file. There is no such thing as 'no rendering' in both the software I use. If it is 'save' then they save in their native project files. Vegas will save it as veg extention. PowerDirector saves it as pds extention. Therefore, a clip must be rendered regardless of any changes whether effect is added or no effect is added.

    Hi Kai, I find your videos very useful, thank you. I’m just an amateur videographer and currently use the entry model in the M series, i.e. EOS M for personal projects but I’m seriously thinking of upgrading to the M50 by the end of the year, unless another camera pops up which will beat the M50 in many ways and still cost the same, which I doubt really! Forgive my ignorance but do yo need to use only full frame lenses with speed boosters or cropped sensor lenses work as well. Many thanks.

    M50 is trash...even worse than m43

      I wouldn’t call m50 trash... I still use and love my m50 ... but I picked up old Gh4 , paired with 14mm prime and it looks sweet ! Lol Panasonic ahead of its time with Gh4 (2014) 👍

      @@PVMMAC Even on TH-cam, one can tell M50 has terrible video codec. Not to mention there's almost no big aperture prime (except 32 14, Sigma is third party )in the M system. We all know it's just a temp phrase using the viltrox. The imbalance between the camera and lenses will force people to use other cameras eventually.

      trash because of the M lenses? Well EF lenses work perfectly with the speedbooster so I have no idea how that is being "trash". If one eventually does upgrade (as most do go full frame), M50 can still be easily your C cam or your BTS cam.
