    Normally those egg cookers work like this:
    When you turn them on the red light will light up and the cooker starts to heat up.
    After a while when the water starts boiling the red light will shut down and it stops heating up until the temperature drops down too much. That's when the heating element is turned on again and the red light lights up. (There's a relay in these things, that's why you hear that click when the heater turns on)
    When the water is evaporated and the eggs are cooked the boiler will beep and you have to turn it of or it'll get damaged.
    At least that's how every cheap egg boiler worked that I've seen

      I have used a few in my life, they last forever (but mom would not let me take hers when I moved out :P ). I find them really handy, I don't have many gadgets in the kitchen, but I love the ease of the egg cooker. In my experience they all get a dark build up really quickly, water is not just H2O and those impurities will leave some dark spots, but you do not have to worry about them at all!!! Barry really should have waited for the noise, the complains there aren't any instructions, but that instruction was actually present.....

    • @caitlinnothhard994
      @caitlinnothhard994 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The egg cooker I have actually has a auto-off feature. Once all the water evaporates the whole thing just switches off. It doesn't have a buzzer, so I set my kitchen timer to go off roughly a minute before the cooker should finish (mine came with a rather thorough instruction booklet that lists approximate cooking times based on how much water you add to it) so I can prep a bowl of cold water to put the eggs in. If I do hardboiled eggs and don't promptly put them in cold water they'll wind up with the browned/greyed yolks like the ones in this video.
      Also the "burnt" stuff is just water impurities. If Barry didn't wash the eggs before putting them in the egg cooker that would explain why it looks extra dark/gross since residue on the eggs would have just burned off a little bit. Good ol' soap and water will clean that up fairly well though.

    Barry, I own a Copper Chef version of that egg maker and absolutely love it. It has an automatic shut off, does up to 14 eggs and has a tray for poaching. The best part is the boiled eggs, though, because the shells come off so easily and it's a really simple, quick way to have boiled eggs in the morning.
    Edit - The eggs from mine are always perfectly cooked, too...not with that sulfur ring around the yolk. The tray is for making scrambled eggs/omlettes, and ours got a brown spot on the metal bit as well, so we switched to using filtered water. I think it's just the impurities in tap water burning on the metal. Not really dangerous, I don't think, just not very nice to look at.

    Barry: Unfortunately again this is User Error. The burnt bit is because you let it boil dry when it told you not to.
    The metal dish is for making Omelettes or Poached egg in it instead of using the egg holder.
    Also you turned it off and let it sit so the yokes ended up grey with oxidation of the sulphur compounds in the yoke.
    The whole dropping in ice water stops this by stopping the cooking but you did this well after you stopped applying heat.
    These machines are great and mine does up to 12 in one go but is a bit more expensive so has a self shut off as well as a timer just to avoid the boiling dry.

    • @CharlieFlemingOriginal
      @CharlieFlemingOriginal 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@elisehannah2748 For me and you not hard at all, but this is easier to clean for everyone, and saves so much time and money filling a full pan of water when the cooker uses barely enough water to cover one egg and can cook 7. Barry bought a bit of a dud as mine has a good beep to say when they are cooked, and was only 8 quid.

    I have some ice like those cactus ones, except mine are in the shape of fruit and stars. They are great when you don't want your drink watered down but still cold. The little pan could be where you put the water so you can easily pour any extra out. The sound the eggs made when you blew them out was fantastic! Deviled eggs are a staple in the Southern US.

    You can get rid of that residue from cooking the eggs by using vinegar just enough to cover the base and it will shine up like new after about 10 minutes. I have one that is attached to my toaster and it does the same thing each time. The extra silver plate is for scrambled or omelet making. I use mine for heating a muffin and a bit ham.

    I have an egg cooker like that! Mine came with fantastic instructions. It even came with a couple of different trays to make poached eggs or omelettes in. The instructions made it a point to tell you different cooking times, recipes, and all that. So at least there are some versions that have a good set of instructions! That can really make or break a product.

    • @WreakingOfSmoke
      @WreakingOfSmoke 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh and the burning is from the minerals in the water. It only turned brown because you left it on for too long. You can use vinegar to clean it off from what I remember. But a mineral buildup is normal! It shows up white if you use appropriate cook times. Not that those instructions were of any help in that department.

    Those devilled eggs look delicious! I think the problem with the egg boiler was that there wasn't enough water in there and it boiled dry. I think the tray you didn't use, is definitely needed to prevent that and then whatever water you do use, is less spread out so less likely to evaporate. Sounds logical to me.

    About the egg boiler. The metal tray is where you would add the water in, right under the actual egg tray, and there should be an egg prickling tool. These work like a charm, but you're supposed to prickle a tiny hole on the egg's bottom, before adding them to the tray. It's basically steaming them, rather than boiling, and I've been using mine for a good decade now.
