The entire subway pattern among all Commonwealth countries was originally adopted from London which is a pioneer in the world of subways. There are other subway "schools" in the world. One of the most interesting ones is the Soviet where the stations were built as marble palaces. Also, they are buried much deeper in the ground. The deepest station in the world is Arsenalna in Kyiv, Ukraine.
@rideurbanrail All true. Though I think that the proximity and similar weather of NYC were big factors in the design of the 1st TTC line. Certainly, the subway cars today of each both look similar - like large breadboxes!
