  • Yams were first domesticated by African farmers 7,000 years ago. Today, 48.1 million tons of yams are produced annually across 4.4 million hectares of land in West Africa's "Yam Belt"-which extends from Cote D'Ivoire to Nigeria, representing over 90 percent of the global production.

Yam is considered as one of the most important herbs in traditional medicine. It is very helpful in strengthening the digestive system and can even relieve depression. It is heartening to know this beautiful plant is reviving in Africa and we wish those farmers the best.

This is very true. There is a big market for what is called wild yam as Wild Yam or chinese yam for fertility and PCOS. It will be interesting to study the yam and understand the full benefits of the yam.

These issues seem to be basic. Over use of soil. Poor selection of yam strain. Substandard and outdated farming techniques. All of these issues contribute to much of their loses. I have no doubt they can overcome this with more attention. As a descendant of West Africa myself (mostly Igbo), I realize we as a people need to return to our indigenous diets for optimal health. I'm going to start planting yams here in Southern California. Had much luck with potatoes. I can't wait. Thank you for the video, it was very informative!!!

if all the workers that are doing nothing in the ministries are diverted to farm food will be surplus. Nigerians say there is no work but i wonder what kind of work they are looking for.

Exactly. Carrying files up and down and gossiping all day is no work at all. Keeping our people lazy. Let them closed at 1 pm and go to farm. Reduce salary by 30%

This is a very important question. When people say "There is no work" they really mean "There is no work they are willing to do" or "There is no work they are qualified for".

Yam is know for its medicinal properties as lim mentioned. I wonder whether a study can be conducted to understand the full benefit of the yam. Yam is widely sold across Europe at a premium price, I wonder if the premium is also felt by the producers. There is a big market for what is called wild yam as Wild Yam or chinese yam for fertility and PCOS. It will be interesting to study the yam and understand the full benefits of the yam.

Fertile or not fertile it is our responsibility to feed our land organically so our land therein feeds the crop of our choice. Its only then that the production and nutritional value will be maintained

Good evening sir. I chatted you few weeks ago but there was no reply . I want to have this your ministry yam seedlings to plant and time is going , here I discovered that our communication system is too poor. We project an idea to the public and feedback from the public is not working. How can I get a training and the seedlings now.
