    This is the tip ive been using for years passed down from my great grandma. Works better if its a cheap white traditional toothpaste too. It works on real silver and gold.

      Please do NOT use toothpaste on real gold or silver jewelry! You will damage it--I saw it too many times when I worked in a fine jewelry store.

      Jessie Baker if something like (toothpaste!!) can hurt real expensive gold and not fake gold then why even buy the real thing ? 🤷🏽‍♂️

    Whether this works or not it's a good idea to suggest putting the plug in the sink, or a washcloth, so nothing falls into the drain.

    • @sharid76
      @sharid76 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      And, if you do that, then lay out a washcloth in the bottom of the sink too, to protect both the jewelry and the surface of the sink from dark marks, chips, etc from dropping things in it while you are working. It's difficult to be too careful with this!

    I just did it and it worked! It was a nice gold tone intricate design with simulated pearls. It was new, but so tarnished I was kind of embarrassed to wear it. I didn't have her Crest, I used my Crest "Brilliance" and I worked deliberately and quickly. I didn't want to dull the pearls. The Crest almost started to take the color off to where a copper color showed. Just be quick and stop the sink up in case you drop something. Thank you for the tip. I also used it on 2 silver tone bracelets. Again, working super fast with toothbrush. Bingo! Well actually I used in on a gold ring that has opal. Hard to clean with that opal. I worked super quick with toothbrush and rinsed quickly. Nice. First time that was cleaned in a long, long time. Again, much thanks and thank you for not making the video long and drawn out.

      NEVER keep your jewelry on, either costume or fine, when using any kind of chemicals. Especially strong chemicals like that contained in Nair! You've already seen the results of that. But that also includes household and laundry cleaners, particularly anything containing chlorine bleach, which will absolutely ruin gold. It will eat it up, like acid.
      My grandfather was a bench jeweler when I was born in 1957, and until he passed away when I was in my 40's. I learned a considerable amount from him over those years - he started teaching me for real when I turned 9. That's a lot of years of great information!

      @@sandraoaks7887 - Thank you very much. It's a lot of information. I'm actually not what you might consider a good candidate for doing podcasts, but I have passed it down on these kinds of posts on TH-cam wherever it seems to fit in appropriately, or whenever anyone asks questions where I feel the answer might be helpful. It's easier to do it "in small doses - or even almost large" wherever it seems to fit in best.

    Can it be any toothpaste?? I recently bought 50 lbs of used broken jewelry and I didn't know how to clean it. Thank you for showing us how to do it. I'm going to be very busy. Thanks again.🌫️💜🌫️☯️☮️✌️

    • @sharid76
      @sharid76 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Fifty POUNDS of used, broken jewelry? Costume jewelry? Or genuine jewelry? None of these techniques are guaranteed to work on and not damage costume jewelry, and if you can afford to purchase real gold jewelry by 50 pound lots, then you can afford to invest in a commercial quality jewelry repair shop. Or at least the equipment to run it.
      I'm not kidding - fifty *pounds* of jewelry is the weight of 10 - 5# bags of sugar! That's the weight of your average 3 year old child! That's a LOT of jewelry, and it's highly unlikely that 50# of real jewelry would be purchased and then the buyer come on TH-cam asking strangers how's the best way to clean it! If that's the case, then you've honestly got more dollars than sense.
      Sort it out first. And I mean sort it. Plated from unplated, anything plated from genuine, solid precious metals.
      Anything plated - which is probably most if not all of it - should not be scrubbed with anything abrasive. Meaning brushes or abrasive cleaning compounds, including opaque toothpastes containing any kind of abrasive compounds. It should be soaked clean in *hot* (not boiling - just hot from the tap) water and some kind of liquid dish detergent, then drained out, thoroughly rinsed, drained again and laid out on thick old towels to air dry.
      Then sort it again, from pieces that survived that process and those that obviously didn't. Anything that can't survive soaking in plain soapy water is a dead loss anyway, and should be discarded. There's very little else that can be done with it at that point. Don't soak anything that has parts glued on, like cheap, fake stones, or fake cameos. Any kind of stones that aren't held on by prongs, channels, or full bezels is probably glued on. Especially old - really old - rhinestones, not cubic zirconia, are probably A. glued on, and B. should be looked at by a vintage costume jewelry resource, who can tell you if they are worth saving, and shouldn't be soaked in anything. But, it's likely that by the time anybody accumulates that amount of old jewelry to begin with, all the best pieces have already been picked out of the lot. Honestly though - FIFTY pounds? 🤔🤔😐😒

    ⚠️ PLEASE READ BEFORE ATTEMPTING ⚠️
    It DOES NOT WORK, it makes your jewelry MORE rusty than it was before. I followed this tutorial for my best friend's birthday to have her necklace be rust free and this MADE IT WORSE.
    DO NOT TRY UNLESS IF YOU WANT RUSTY JEWELRY.
