I love that reverb sound starting around 0:24!! The Shackletons exude power, sort of like a four engine hot rod, yet they were built to work hard day after day for decades!

People complain about the noise of the Tu-95, but those contra-props of the Shackleton produced a fair amount too ;-)

The contra props certainly generate noise not unlike the TU95 n actually mask the raw sound of 4 Griffons at work until the planes passes one n then one can hear the griffons from behind.😁

I was posted to AEW 8 Sqn as a air radar mechanic in 1971, we fitted the AN-APS20 radar from the RN Fairy Gannet into the Shackleton. The lovely growl of the Griffin engines, very much the “Old Grey Lady”, an aircraft from a past era.

Awesome airplane. I used to see them over the north sea when I was a kid. It was really exciting for someone who grew up with tales of Lancaster bombers 👍

We used to see them fly low over our house quite often when I lived in Newquay in the 1960s. I always liked to see (and hear) them, but some people complained. Little did we know we were seeing a part of history. A school friend of mine’s father was squadron leader at St Mawgan.

Yes, the sound of this one really takes me back. As a kid we lived near RCAF Langar where A.V. Roe's fitting sheds were and we'd go upu there on a sundays to watch them come in for their service checks. The RCAF also used to let the local schools use their swimming pool.

This aircraft now lies dormant and abandoned at the western end of Paphos' (Cyprus) Airport's main runway, along with a sister Shack.

Funny how there are so many comments about Shacks at St.Mawgan, but nary a word about Shacks at St.Eval where I spent about 3 idilic years of my life. There were at least 2 Sqdrns of Shacks based there. It was in early 1950’s when Sqdrns. were transitioning from the Lancaster to the Shackleton. I recall two incidents of note. One being the death of a crewman who walked into a contra-rotating prop while it was running, the second being the loss of two Shackleton’s while on patrol south of Ireland. It was presumed a mid air collision to be the cause. Does anyone know any more about this incident???

They mentioned about ‘Florence’ in the BBC Panorama documentary “A Bad Deal For Britain” just a year before the Nimrod AEW was officially cancelled.
I sure hope that Shackleton survived long enough till 1991 to get a much needed retirement.

My first posting after joining the RAF in 1969 was to Ballykelly NI. Most of the aircraft for 8 Squadron came from there, as it closed in 1971. Best moment, watching the outgoing Station Commander beat up the airfield in one. Always fond memories.

Used to watch these take off in line astern after doing Mag drops at the end of the runway. We used to get loads in on detatchment at Brize Norton when I was and aircraft tech there watching 6 take off one after another AWESOME. Do miss the old girls I wish I could have got posted on them for a few years before they left us.

Funny how I see so many references of Shacks at St.Mawgan, but nary a hint of memories of St.Eval. There were two Squadrons of Shackleton’s based there in the early/mid 50’s.
I spent 3 very memorable years at that air base where they were phasing out the good old reliable Lancaster for the Shackleton. I recall a couple of incidents involving Shackletons while I was there, one being a crewman who lost his life by walking into a prop at one of the dispersal areas north of the church, the other was the loss of two Shackletons while out on patrol south of Ireland. It was thought they may have collided with each other. All that space out there & they had to find one another to bring them down??? Was there ever any further reporting or findings on that sad occurrence???
