As a teenager we used to go on holiday near RAF St. Mawgan in Cornwall, where Shackletons were based until the Nimrods came along - fantastic planes that made an even better noise! Fantastic model, love it.
When I was about sixteen (1966), my older sister asked me what I wanted for a Christmas present. I said I wanted the Shackleton model made by 'Frog'. When she got to the shop, she told the salesman she wanted a model for her brother. When he asked which one, she forgot the 'Shackleton' bit and just asked for a 'Frog'. Miraculously. the correct information got through in the end.
When I was a child in the 90s, my dad taped a perpetual motion doc on the Shackleton off the tv and I became obsessed with it. It became my favourite plane and I really wanted a kit. My poor dad spent hours trying to track one down but with no Internet, the old Frog kits eluded us. Now I've finally got this kit ordered. You've done an absolutely amazing job there, if mine looks even half as good as yours, I'll be very happy. Great work!

Yes it's all about money like most things in life. Isn't there a couple of ground running Shackletons, one in Gatwick and Coventry? Bruntingthorpe used to be a great day out, but I think that's gone by the way now 😥
Caught your comment on the masking fluid. Try putting a small piece of tape underneath. Makes removing it much easier. Nice build Greg, catch you on the next one.
Wonderful build. Thank you so much for sharing. Loved how all the surface detail came to life with the panel wash. Superb. I like to build old Frog and Airfix kits, and I find that Tamiya Extra Thin sometimes fogs the clear parts. Does anyone else experience this or have any advice? Once again thank for the superb work you show us here.
Canopies dipped in Johnsons Pledge/Klear helps prevent fogging with superglue sometimes. But I've personally never had trouble with Tamiya Extra thin 👍
Hi Greg another great build I've got this in my stash & looks the part great colours and nice light weathering makes the finish spot on many thank for sharing stay safe jon
Nice one Greg, I've got this kit and really looking forward to building it, a few years ago I got a commission job to build one of these planes but these kits were not available so I had to convert an old Frog MK3 into an AEW2 Oh boy what job that was! (Side note, The plane is in the manchester science museum and the model with the pilot)
Very nice job and well presented. You make it look so easy ..I have been after doing this kit for some time . after seeing your build .I may just follow your lead ...thanks for sharing ...
Wow, Greg... I really like this one. The wash you used looks like it worked really well. The color scheme is great, and the markings add just the right amount of color. Well done, and great video!
I think you have really got this model right and a good video and build. I remember seeing Shackleton's at air displays many years ago and being told they were named after Magic Roundabout characters. I think one I saw was called Mr Rusty - not a good name for an aircraft - more like Mr Corroded. The last two I saw were about 20 years ago at the museum at the end of the runway at Gatwick, one was capable of ground running.
Hi Greg, that was a absolutely outstanding build, it's a pity there were some fit or part issues, I think these days of kit manufacturing this should not be the case, keep safe and well mate, best regards from a Kiwi living in Australia
Very impressive result Greg. A bit of double sided tape on the modeling mat is great for preventing the loss of very small parts, such as the navigation lights, prior to assembly.
Great build, saw one of these beasts fly over my house when I was a wee boy, in my youthful ignorance thought it was a B24, It was only years later I found out the truth!
In the 70s, I shared a flat with a guy who did Quality Control for Revell in Potters Bar: paid to make model kits all day! He used to bring home the plastic 'overflow' (whatever) from the machines, multicoloured irregular plastic sculptures , very arty. Jon Price, are you out there?!
It looks like a Shackleton to me and yes its another great model Greg, I used to like watching them fly when I was in the ATC back in the early 80's, it was a great aircraft and another of the RAF workhorses. Like you with this model I'm getting a little frustrated trying to convert a Revell 1.48 USAF B24D into an RAF Coastal Command Liberator Mk 3a. What would you recommend to do with the raised panel lines in the model? I'm building it as a tribute to my great uncle who was 224sqn's Bombing Leader during WW2. Serving as an Observer with RAF Coastal Command and he lost his life in a flying accident on 30.10.1942. When their a/c hit a barrage balloon whilst attempting an emergency landing near Plymouth.
That sounds like a nightmare, I've only ever had to rescribe a few kits, then add the rivet detail afterwards, using Rosie the Riveter tools. The first thing I'd do is sand the surface detail off. The raised lines usually leave a light mark on the plastic surface, usually, to help guide. If that doesn't work I'd pen the panel lines in using the raised ones as a guide. Once the rescribing has been complete all the pen work must be sanded off; otherwise it will show through the final paint job. Then use Dymo adhesive tape, which comes in blue or black, as a hard edge for the scribing tool. I use Tamiya's Plastic Scriber II, but that's just a personal choice. Hope this helps.
Thanks Greg, I've been trying to build this for ages. Im using enamel paints that I have here, do you know if Tamiya enamel thinners will work with Humbrol enamel paint? I havent been able to find any Humbrol thinners here during the current NZ lockdown?
@@pjb5757 I don't know. Flory models did a vid on mixing various paints with thinners some time ago. If not try some paint and the thinners in a small pot and see what reaction you get, remembering that different ratios will sometimes get different reactions.

I haven’t built a model with such detail such as panel wash and oil staining, so this will be a first for me but it’s a project I’m planning on using to escape to my garage with and escape the kids. I just wondered if there was a reason for not adding a final varnish sealant? Would this interfere with the oil wash and panel grease effect that you built up or was it just personal choice in the end? Much appreciated. Jim.
I can't remember now, but usually, I seal the decals and paint in first with either satin or gloss varnish. Then the weathering is added on top; this isn't sealed in. Hope this helps.
I debated for a while if I wanted this kit or the one from Airfix... Finally I went for the MR2. Airfix, that is... The radar dome gives this one a lot of character, though.
