  • ( www.TFLcar.com ) The 2016 Mazda Miata MX-5 is all new and reborn. Gone is the round and jelly bean and instead the newest 2016 Mazda Miata MX-5 has been restyled with a more modern and aggressive design language as Emme found out in the TFLcar first drive review.

    I'm ripping my '15 Focus SE sedan 5spd around and getting an average of 41 mpg. It weighs 2850+ pounds. Has custom wheels with wide tires. Upgraded sway bar. Cat back exhaust and Steeda intake. Around 170 hp at wheels.

    Great video Emme. I sat in one late month(already sold and couldn't drive it) and I felt great and I am 6'2" ! What color would you buy, I don't want Red, but the Ceramic or white? Also, did you know that there is two more compartments in the car, each behind the seats with room enough to but a water bottle or whatever. Kept up the good work!

    Got my white Sport a week ago, it is perfect for the tight NH twisties here, great fun. I drive the same roads I used to ride on my Ducatis and get much the same sort of enjoyment, though at a bit slower speed. The car, like the bikes, rewards good driving, a satisfying experience. I'll look into track days next season, they are great learning experiences. In a month or so it'll snow, the car will spend the winter in the garage, a long dark winter.

    Electric steering is far better than hydraulic.! Hydraulic pumps rob hp they create heat add weight, electric steering can be set to be very responsive but most people are not aircraft pilots or use to such precise steering. I will take electric steering over hydraulic any day. I have have been a technician for over 35 years have work on everyting from cars to 747 aircraft. Electric servos are very accurate. In my opinion I think you need to take another look at electric steering.

    • @anon457
      @anon457 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      hifax1 But it feels fake. With hydraulic you can feel the car better, same reason people like manuals is because you feel like you have better control of the car which you do.

    • @jocamp5
      @jocamp5 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      hifax1 I’ll tell you this, this electric steering is really good but the hydraulic gives you more feedback . It’s a trade off and for good or bad, electric steering are here to stay

  • @chrisdavies3589
    @chrisdavies3589 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

    The biggest dynamic gripe seems to be with the electric power steering. Not sure about the ND1 in this review, but I know the ND2 has the EPS motor on the rack and not on the column like most other EPS systems. Whilst still not as feelsome as a good hydraulic system, at least Mazda did utilize the best version of EPS they could for the MX5.

    speaking of fuel economy. it runs on premium fuel, so it is already 15 cents more expensive than the regular per L. for today gas price, it's more than 15% extra. I know the engines is high compression ratio, but if Toyota /Lexus managed to fuel all their cars with 87. why on earth all other sporty cars out there needs to run on premium .

    Women see cars differently so this is a refreshing review. Oddly the cup holder issues is pretty much wholly an American issue. Other countries do not eat and drink in their cars like we do - which is probably another accident contributor. That being said she is the ONLY reviewed of about 50 I have seen that explains these seats do not contain FOAM rather are constructed of a meshing material. They do take some getting used to though and feel far differently than a foam seat after only a few miles. Not sure why people care about manual over automatic when you can shift the car (Tiptronic style) in automatic and neither version is fast. I mean there is no way this car hits 5.9 secs to 60. Most have it at 6.4-6.8 and automatic at about 7.0 seconds. Some even have manual at 6.8-7.0 seconds. Why it varies by nearly 1.2 seconds is a mystery.

    • @timothysmith5453
      @timothysmith5453 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      T Meo the seat is the biggest issue I have with the car. To be honest I don’t think I would have purchased the vehicle if I had known just how uncomfortable it would be when driving for a time a little longer than a test drive. I’ve been adding lots of different foam pieces trying to make it work but no good so far. Might have to even sell the car if I can’t work it out, which is just crazy as I’ve never seen this before and had many cars. I’ve also been surprised how frustrated I have got with the car. Mostly these are little things but I haven’t had this before on any car.
      Things like the windows lower when the roof is lowered but doesn’t come back when the roof is placed up. Sounds picky except it’s so annoying as the windows are disabled quickly when the engine is turned off.

    I'm confused, they're named different here in Canada, we have the GX, the GS and the GT in that order price wise. Which is this? BTW, there's incredibly hard to find anywhere in Ontario, they're just not sending out many, and they cost a fortune ($33k, $37k and $41k before taxes). Oh, and they're almost all automatics!!! Love to get one though (manual of course).

    I really like your style--fun, punchy, with the facts not overly boring (lb.-feet, etc.). I wish someone would decode "Skyactiv," which I think is no more meaningful than Ford's "EcoBoost," but a cute marketing term ... one envisions satellites adjusting the fuel flow as you come out of a strong G turn, angels stiffening the shocks on a nice straight bit of highway... but I get it, it's a good car and companies like their cool words. BTW, does the trunk hold a standard guitar case or two? I think I'd be content with a 1989 edition...

    My goodness it's a sports car! It's not practical for uses like going to the laundry with a big azz laundry basket! ANYONE who buys one of these things shouldn't be expecting a whole lot of room anyway. And by the way, the power in that ND Miata beats your MazdaSpeed (turbo) Miata!

    • @the4armedmonk
      @the4armedmonk 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Calvin “DJ DejeXtion” Watkins 2004 mazda speed unmodified has 178 , this has 155, you can easily get 200 in the mazda speed.

    • @CalvinWatkins
      @CalvinWatkins 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      the4armedmonk Yes but the 2004 Mazda Speed is also heavier my friend and the new ND is the fastest mazda in track time. I'm talking stock not modified..

    • @the4armedmonk
      @the4armedmonk 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Calvin “DJ DejeXtion” Watkins The gearing on the ND is very close gearing and this gearing makes it have a limited top speed. You need to switch through to the 4th gear to even get up to 60 mph. The top speed of this car is around 116 mph topspeed at fuel cutoff in 6th gear, while the mazdaspeed miata has a top speed of 135 at fuel cutoff. If you take and mazdaspeed mx5 and put the brembo brakes on it and use the stock turbo and turn up the boost you can get maybe 40-45 more hp than the stock 178. If they made a mazdaspeed turbo ND with longer gears, I would probably buy that one instead. If they make a mazdaspeed version they should put the CX-9 turbo 2.5l in the car instead of the mazda 3 2.0l sky-active.

    Woohoo! Emme doing her thing. I can imagine she was smitten having the car for a week.
    The engineers have outdone themselves with the new gen. Showing all the other manufacturers how to introduce a great car without having to add a crazy amount of weight.
    Sadly this car is too small for daily use. There's hardly any room inside and the trunk is a joke. Don't get me wrong, this car is great as a 2nd or 3rd car. But as a daily use vehicle, the NC is better.
    Is Emme saying she's got a lot of junk in her trunk??? Ha! Easily fit into the Miata trunk with room to spare. 😉

    There's a reason why most cars now use electric power steering: fuel economy. By NOT being directly driven by the engine for the power steering system, that means better fuel economy, and nowadays the engine computer software can be changed to adjust the "feel" of the electric power steering system.

    The new mx-5 is great but even if you move the battery to the trunk you still have to deal with the 13.0:1 compression, so turbocharging is not only going to be a task, but costly as well.

    How is the undercoating/rustproofing on these cars compared to, say, the 04-07 Mazda 3?

    How do you mean "you get " electric power steering "even in a porche " If you can afford a porche youre not going to be bothered about a couple of miles per gallon saving !! The only saving i can see is to the German accountants !! THE ALIBI is that they`re saving" you" money when putting these cheap and nasty devices on , they are the main recipients of the dosh saving . Admittedly in the premium cars electric steering is now of a reasonable standard , but further down the food chain in lesser cars thats where the vague steering and the nostalgia for hydraulic "feel" kicks in.

      Hydraulic steering in a front engine car is more simple. Less distance to run hydraulic lines to power the steering. Now imagine having a rear or mid engine design. Then you have to engineer a hydraulic system with lines from the back of the car all the way to the front. The electric steering cuts weight, gives better mpg, and leaves more room for more important engineering elements. I doubt Porsche did if for mpg.. Probably for simplicity

      Exactly . It saves money. Why has it suddenly become difficult for Porche and the others to fit hydraulic steering after decades of fitting the superior system.?

      +SuperWHIZZO I drove the Club edition this last weekend. The steering feel is gone. It was like steering a '72 Ford LTD. I did not buy. Mazda: FIX THIS! At least add some resistance to make us think there is a better feel. I wont buy until something is done.

      +SuperWHIZZO EPS allows the car to manage steering. Lane departure warning, autonomous driving and all that crap can be introduced. Silly stuff.
