2016 Mazda MX-5 Miata | CarGurus Test Drive Review

  • Mazda’s MX-5 Miata is the best-selling two-seat roadster ever, with more than a million units sold since its 1989 debut. The 2016 Miata marks the debut of the fourth generation, and while it still doesn’t offer much trunk space, it does offer one of the most compelling driving experiences available in a new production car.
    As always, the 2016 Miata is a convertible and available with a manual. A 2.0-liter 4-cylinder with 155 hp and 148 lb-ft of torque provides plenty of power to get the 2,332-pound Miata moving, but it isn’t designed for straight-line speed. Quiet, beautiful back roads are the Miata’s best backdrop, revealing that the car has tenacious grip in the corners but still delivers a relatively comfortable ride.
    The new Miata does not have LATCH child-seat anchors, but the flagship Grand Touring trim offers rain-sensing wipers, adaptive headlights with automatic high beams, a lane-departure warning system, and a blind-spot warning system with rear cross-traffic alerts. I've seen countless videos of car reviewers who put me to sleep with their technical jargon but you sir are one hell of a story teller! You remind me of that guy on the radio years ago who had a program called "and now for the rest of the story". It's obvious you have a passion for cars...convertibles in particular and it comes across big time in this review. I drive a Boxster but the new Miata does get my attention when I see one. Thank you for showing a love affair with cars that there is no known cure for!

      Great comment. Paul Harvey! I remember listening to that in the car as a kid. I’m curious about boxsters myself but love my 06 Miata.

    I'm buying my first Miata tomorrow! I've known that I needed one since I was 12. It's the 2003 SE. I can't wait! Your review was great. Well done, sir!

    Terrific review...and love the heartfelt opening about your love of Miata--and riding in your Dad's convertible. Made it for me. As for the car: just got my 2017 Ceramic ND in August. Have never had more fun driving a car in my life--and I am 51.

    I recently was fortunate enough to get a screaming deal on a Laguna Blue 1994 1.8L and I am absolutely in love with it. To the point that I'm saving already to replace my current daily, a tuned 2016 GTI. To hell with 4 doors and practicality... That's what the wife's CX5 is for. Great review!

    Wow! We must be brothers. I’m 46 now… I also grew up with my dad who owned a 1989 SAAB 900 Turbo convertible. That’s the car that started my love affair with drop tops! I also learnt how do drive a manual transmission on that car! At 25 I bought a 1990 Miata, then a 1994, I also owned a 1997 STO which I flew to Alabama from Montreal to buy it! I also regret selling it! In 2019 I bought a 2004 Mazdaspeed in red… sold it after a year as I got an offer I could not refuse. Should have kept it but no A/C. Last year I bought a NC GT… sold after 1 month. Ok so this week I just bought a 2017 ND GS Performance with Brembo, BBS, Recaro… love this car and all the modern features… it’s plenty fast and love the clutch and gears. I also love how it handles and steals!!! I agree… therapy on 4 wheels! Great video. Thanks and I hope you get an ND or NE (if they make one) soon!

    That was a great MX5 review!! I have seen EVERY MX5 review on the net, and this is number one! Since I'm in the market for an MX5 I have been watching everything out there. Not sure on the NC or ND. If they offered the 1.5L in the US, I would be driving it right now. It is going to be daily driver so MPG is a big factor. Great review, think I'll watch it again.

    • @giorx5
      @giorx5 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +toshibavoodoo I wouldn't think of MPG for new Miata since it's got a great mileage for both engines. Especially in cruising 2L engine is better imo.

      I agree 100%, You have a lot of knowledge about something that is not announced yet. I hope your right, as I kept getting more excited the longer I read your reply. PRHT would be nice, when you have to make stops in really shady parts of town. I'm hearing that next month will be a few car show's that Mazda will be doing some more reviles. THANKS!!

    Excellent. You nailed it. I just purchased an mx5 mk3 2006, grey like yours, looks and drives like new. There's just one thing: Ive had it four weeks now and I cant get out of it. I dont mean there's anything wrong with the doors....its just that it's such a great drive (almost always with the top down unless its raining) there isnt much else I'd rather do. Gotta go now, Im off to pick up a coffee. There's a starbucks right outside my door-but there's another one 15 miles away and since I got this car, that's the one I keep going to for some reason!!👍

    I love my Sport version. It's my first MX-5, I'd never driven one before I bought it. I've had Alfas, Jags, an MGB, this car is pure fun and far more sophisticated. Of course at 69 it is a bit of a challenge getting in but once seated all is good. I live in central NH, lakes region, the car is perfect for the two lane twisties here. More power/weight would be wasted. Top down, even on a 37 degree day, is very comfortable, the heater has to be dialed back a bit. It snowed yesterday so it's in the garage now, so looking forward to Spring!

    I made the 'mistake' of driving a new 2016 Miata a few weeks ago. I was so impressed that I bought one (red/club/6 spd) one week later. This is my first Miata (have owned three M3s and a C6 'vette) and I totally relate to your sentiments. Great review.

    I can't agree more with you. I bought a Miata 2000 in 2002 and purchased a 2016 MX5 GT last spring. I still own the 2 cars and just can't sell the NB. I love them both. Like you said, it's therapy on 4 wheels :-)

    Never again. I bought a 2016 MX-5 in late 2015, it was an automatic. I didn't think I'd ever want another manual trans. again, but after 2.5 years of trying to act as though I was driving a sports car I found myself looking at the 2018's... I wanted the gray color after having the metallic/ceramic for 2.5 years I wanted a different color and I was going for the gray w/manual trans.. I ended up with a new 2017, I couldn't take that red top on all the gray 2018's. I've had this MX-5 since the middle of March, 2018 and it's now the beginning of August almost and I have over 9K miles on the damned thing! I can't stay out of it! Oh, by the way, great review, I got a kick out of it. I've shown this review to a few other's and they come away with the same idea I had by your review... The only way to get out of this new MX-5 is with monthly payments.

    • @carlosbrigett2574
      @carlosbrigett2574 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I've owned 2 new MGB's, a '64 and a '66. Both had a lot of trunk space as did the '66 Austin Healey. Never did understand the 2 six volt batteries in series to achieve 12 volts though? Bought a 2016 automatic trans. ND and now have a 2017 w/manual trans., all the difference in the world, I have a hard time staying out of it.

    Nice review. I also found the ball shifter a bit too small and too tall. It screws off, so swapping it with an aftermarket unit is easy. I replaced mine with a VooDoo Magnum. The steering at speed is more weighted if you set the tire pressure to 29 psi all around (a lot of people neglect to check this) and get a precision alignment. The suspension is fully adjustable for camber, caster and toe, but they don't bother to fiddle with it at the factory. I don't know what to say about your elbow hitting the console -- never had that happen. Don't flap your wings while you drive?

    I race motorcycles thru the canyons, I have this 2016 miata, a guy tried to keep up with me
    thru the corners and couldnt. I was only going at 60% also. All the bigger heavier sports cars with more weight and horsepower cannot use it where it counts. Actually their extra weight and horsepower actually get them into sliding rear end situations out of .control
    The light yet great torque this car provides will scare you in the corners. Power to weight is the real deal. Its getting to be quite the replacement to cranking it out on my racebike.
    Test driving will tell you somethings about the car, but after owning itfor a year driving it in our calif canyons, you would be convinced you wont find any sports car out there in this price range that gives you such a thrill. Its stable solid feeling, nothing cheap feeling about this car. ITs tight and precise in all its moves. Remember it isn't world car of the year for nothing

    Strange price, US is mostly cheaper than Sweden. Here it cost 26 800$ for 1.5L and 28 500$ for 2.0L.
    Nice review.

    • @vossler360
      @vossler360 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +kenneth61 I believe that the MX5 is still cheaper in the US, as the starting price for a base 2.0L "Sport" trim is $25,000. The mid-level "Club" trim, which was reviewed in this video, starts at around $29k. What significantly increased the price on this test vehicle was the Brembo/BBS package ($3400) and the aero trim ($800).

    • @youcanrunnaked
      @youcanrunnaked 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Eric Shea Brembo/BBS package includes the Aero pack, but you are otherwise correct.

    The first half of your "review" was not a review, but simply personal stories which did nothing to add to your opinions about the ND; you should have left it out. Otherwise, your review was well done and helpful. I have been driving an ND for 10 months now and really enjoy it!

    • @travisrhodes2862
      @travisrhodes2862 7 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Isn't a review nothing but opinions anyway? His story lead into the review. The man loves miatas and has driven many so he knows a lot about them. The whole point of the miata is the "horse and rider" mentality. You are supposed to feel one with the car and make memories with it. That is what Mazda intended. That is why this review was great.
