    This has to be the best car review I've ever seen, having a Mazda engineer talk over the exposed power train was incredible

    The car weighs just over 2300 lbs, so 155 hp is enough to have fun with it.

    Got to say, MotoMan, this is one of the best reviews of the new Miata so far. Up there with Autocar's, which everyone else copied, and Consumer Report's, which was based more on the history and marketing aspects. Thumbs up, papito. Oh, yeah, I'm definitely a life-long Miata enthusiast having owned and tastefully modified each of the previous incarnations of the car.

    I am a fan of this ND model and search all the videos about it . It's the first time that I see a clever report on it. Thanks very much . Colin Chapman would have loved this model. With a bit of "cocorico" I would say that the interior design was managed in the californian design office by a young and brilliant French guy.

    I've owned a 2016 MX-5/Club w/automatic. I didn't care for the original cloth seats, so I had them redone in Mercedes leather and the drivers seat cut down to fit somewhat and all for approx. $1700.00. I'm sure it could have been done somewhere else cheaper, but this place is known for never having to say you're sorry, so they did the work. I recently traded to a new 2017 Club/manual trans. There was no problem having those seats switched from the 2016 to the 2017. Now have all of what makes a pure sportscar, as I did many years ago in my 1964 MGB and again in a 1966 MGB. I love this driving addictive motorcar. By the way Moto Man does one hell of a job in his reviews!

  • @gnosos9812

    Great review! The best I've seen. Very informative.
    I've been waiting for this car to come out so I could give myself as a retirement present the roadster I've always wanted. But some of the puzzling choices you mention are tempting me to wait to see what Fiat/Abarth offers. (I've owned an 850 and a 124 coupe, both of which indeed made the "Fix It Again Tony" reputation well deserved, so I do not take this decision lightly.)
    First, seeing how the black cloth seats in my 2008 Honda Accord V6 look, I swore I'd never buy a car with black cloth seats again. So what does Mazda do? It makes black cloth the only option for all but the GT model.
    Second, on top of this, I've seen conflicting reports of color choices, but even the best and probably most reliable report (the brochure for the car) has an "Eh!" set of color choices: red, gray, black, light blue, silver, white, and pearl white. Two whites! Why? (I've also seen reports with two reds. I also saw a dark metallic blue and bright yellow for Japan, but they don't seem destined for the U.S.)
    Even though it probably wouldn't arrive before January, I'd put a deposit down tomorrow if I could order a Club model in metallic British Racing Green with tan leather interior and tan roof. Mazda go ahead and offer this only with the Brembo package, Recaro seats, and the GT's electronic gizmos, and tack on the additional costs. It still would be a damn sight less than a Boxter and be one of the most coveted cars around.

    Definitely YES to the "Grand Touring Sport" question. I want it all or at least most of it: heated seats AND LSD AND sport tuned suspension. I'm on my second NC and it'll be my last Miata if I can't get the sports package in a GT (they can leave out the sport bodywork bits if they want).

      Yippie Forced induction with a 13:1 compression ratio? Rest in pieces little Skactiv
      Sure they could always drop the compression ratio, but that defeats the purpose of a Skyactiv engine

    • @giorx5
      @giorx5 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      samin90 A small turbo working at 0.7-0.8 bar would give 30-40 HP more with great torque all over the rpm range with no problem for reliability and fuel consumption. Performance would be miles better though. Close to 5 secs for 0 to 60 mph for example.

    • @funkingitup1805
      @funkingitup1805 8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      +giorx5 0.7 - 0.8 bar is roughly 10-12 psi. At 13:1, on pump gas, there is no fucking way that is happening. If you are not merely spewing garbage, show an example of where anyone has done this. You are also delusional if you think 40hp is going to get a Miata to do 0-60 in 5 seconds.

    • @giorx5
      @giorx5 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +funkingitup Mazda RX7 FC Turbo II had a turbo with 0.8 bar and went from 170 PS NA to 200 PS. So, 30-40 PS is easily done. And close to 5 secs is 5.4 or lower. So, take it easy...

    • @funkingitup1805
      @funkingitup1805 8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      +giorx5 Your example of the RX7 has a compression ratio of 9:1. I know your grasping for straws, but comparing a 9:1 motor vs. a 13:1 motor is akin to comparing pump gas to race fuel.The Miata has 13:1 compression. You can not run the boost you you claim would give "no problem for reliability and fuel consumption," and the engine would detonate. You have a fundamental misunderstanding about the capabilities of pump gas. The Miata does 0-60 in ~7.0s now. 40 more horsepower would not achieve ~5.0s

    Mr. Moto-Man, I have been searching far and wide to find an answer to that question and was quite pleased to hear you bring it up. Please, please, PLEASE run the idea of a Club with Tan & Leather up the Mazda totem pole. With the RX-8 there was a special edition "Shinka" model with extra interior/exterior color options....Maybe the Miata could have the same thing?? Anywho, great video. I would love to be in your line of work one day, and behind the wheel of one of these cars.
    P.S. YES to the tan & leather seats in the Club trim

  • @tikijojo

    I'm starting to watch a lot of the reviews of the ND Miata and I must say as a 2015 NC Club owner, I'm a little confused. Almost every, if not all, NC reviews from 2007-2015 praised the crap out of it. The only downside to it was always the entertainment system and how simple and dated it was. Some reviewers even praised it for being as such. Now, while watching ND reviews, I keep hearing reviewers talk about how "fat" and "uncomfortable" the NC was.
    Now, I get it. The ND is better than the NC in many ways, as it should be, it's a completely brand new car. But, let's not forget how many head to head comparison's the NC won and how widely praised it was for 8 years before we start bashing it on the way out. My .02.

    • @choltzapple
      @choltzapple 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      tikijojo I remember when the NC came out. There was a lot of excitement about it, of course, but also a very large number of people who wanted Mazda to go back to what the NA Miata was. That has been in the background of the NC's praise since day one by Miata enthusiasts. You don't hear it as much from "regular car guys". It seems Mazda took the hint and headed the ND in that direction. The NC is a great car, the NA (and it looks like the ND now as well) is a great Miata.

    • @elizabethsingleton6737
      @elizabethsingleton6737 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +tikijojo - I have owned one of each generation and actually 2 NAs, the 2nd one having an aftermarket supercharger. I like the NA best for driving. I like the NC GT because it's comfortable for long distance driving. I like leather seats - which all mine had except the NB. I will eventually buy the ND.

    • @tikijojo
      @tikijojo 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I also like the fact the NC has actual storage and 4 cup holders. Was it really necessary to remove the glove box? I do like the looks of the ND, I think the design is more aggressive.

    • @elizabethsingleton6737
      @elizabethsingleton6737 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think the ND styling is partially to overcome the attitude that the Miata is a chick car. I have heard that one so often. And to compete with the BMW crowd. I don't understand removing the glove box. As for 4 cupholders - it is nice but I rarely use them for cups as any bottle or cup in the center tends to fall over and the door ones are awkward to use. I have just given up drinking coffee in my NC and stick to bottled water.

    Horsepower is nothing to Mazda. Its the torque and transmission which allows it to pull better out of corner but weak on the straights versus a similarly priced sports car with higher HP numbers. Based on cost and almost similar qualities, this competes with the gt86/FRS . Yet, its a convertible; there's no competition. I don't know of any other car (considering price and open top) that competes to the MX5 which explains the mild updates throughout the years. Without the gt86/frs/brz recently, there's no other affordable good handling sports car available.

    • @MrAntimationStudios
      @MrAntimationStudios 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      zodiacfml Arguably the Daihatsu Copen, but that was FWD, so it didn't really appeal to the same market, and it was even smaller than the first gen MX-5. Not that it really matters, it was such an obscure and low volume car anyway, I'm just trying to think of competitors.

    • @funkingitup1805
      @funkingitup1805 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +zodiacfml It is also arguable that the Mustang convertible is competition in the convertible sports car realm. It doesn't compete in the exact segment, but it is definitely competing for the same price point. The Mustang a pig, but it is very capable now with the independent rear suspension. By the numbers, the Mustang would win acceleration and most track times, but I'd pick the Miata all day.

    • @MrAntimationStudios
      @MrAntimationStudios 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Actually I just realized that the ford/mercury capri from the 90's was made to be a direct competitor, not very successful though, as it was FWD and a 4 seater, meaning it had a lot of flex.

    It's funny to see that body color in the inside of the car is considered a cool thing today. Back in the seventies it was a "feature" of entry-level vehicles ^^. That said, this new MX-5 is really cool. I saw one at my local dealership and it's damn sexy. Gen 4 is the best no doubt. If I can afford buying a second car just for fun, it'll be it. +Patrick McCallum You'll have to go up to the Grand Touring model for lane departure warning system. It also has something called "blind spot monitoring" which lets you know if a car is approaching in your blind spot when you are about to changing lanes. I tried this on a Merc E350, it was great.

      +mohawk5010 yep, thx. Unfortunately Mazda has decided not to include the lsd on the GT model :-( its a bit of a cluster... I would pull the trigger on the ND if Mazda would either include the lsd on the GT (for the US market) or provide optional heated Recarro's for the club... Fingers crossed for improved configuration options for 2017 models :-)

    Great review. But at the beginning you were kind of surprised that Miata is 30% lighter than Boxster GTS, but Porsche has more than 100% more of a horsepower. (155hp vs 325hp) and almost twice the torque.

    Great car, Motoman...I've owned two previous MX-5s, and this new ND is wonderful...but please suggest four changes to Mazda that would make it perfect:
    1) Recarro seats with improved lumbar support (remember, this is for guys over 50, who tend to have bad backs)
    2) Boosted horsepower...205hp?
    3) A glove box
    4) Cup holders on box sides you can actually reach and use, that don't block the CD player (again, guys over 50 still play CDs)

    Mazda is really thinking. That comment about making a metal valve cover was valid. Plastic valve covers look like crap. That one design detail was actually important.
    Btw, I was never a Miata fan. After seeing this car, it's tech, and in this color. Well call me a fan of the 2016 Miata. Beautiful. Hopefully they still have something like this in another 10 years when it isn't critical I have back seats like today.

    I am interested in the new RF model, but same issue, you can only get the Club with black cloth interior or the the Grand Touring with leather and std suspension. I'd like to see the Club chassis parts as an option package on the GT.

    Great review - sorry I missed it when the car was launched. I would like to see the "Sport" with a LSD....the rest I would mod myself. The Sport has none of the tech, which frankly is nice but not needed. We have a Mazda 3 and love it, so bet the ND is great.

    The point of owning this car is for having fun. People who buy fun cars want to personalize them to make them unique like themselves. Given that reasoning, I would think that you should be able to customize this car to suit you. I love the Club edition but would also like to add some personal touches like tan leather.

    The Club Sport package in Canada is included in both the mid trim(GS) and the GT, but they do not come with the BBS wheels :\. If they can offer the GS trim with leather interior and BBS wheels that would be great.

    I will buy a red convertible 2 litre manual Club Sport with leather seats, as soon as I see one. Just as I bought my NC in 2006. But we are still waiting in Australia... I can understand Mazda wanting to sell these in summer, so the southern hemisphere will get them in spring.

    I don't need the leather myself!!! Love my NC PRHT which I want to see on that Club Sport!!! PRHT is what made me buy a Miata over an S2000 in 2007!!!

    My Understanding the touring ver. gets updated seats better Bose radio and better seat speakers etc I also hope you can get the same sport club additions also . Then that would be the ultimate MX-5 to Date.The Cup holders can be placed in either both to rear or one rear and one to passenger side . I have also seen a Video where the wind screen in rear was broken off , looking to be a problem if moved around much.
    Thanks, enjoyed it !

  • @craigfreger7958

    Heated seats are nice for a roadster, whether the seats are cloth or leather (albeit more important if leather). I went with the Club (added NAV) and don't regret it. Wanted the LSD and sport suspension; did not want leather as I live in a hot and rainy climate. Of the GT electronics, I would only want auto-on headlights. All models should have a back-up camera, standard.

  • @AbeFM
    @AbeFM 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    Certainly a mix of the GT and the CS would be amazing. The suspension will likely get swapped out for anyone who's into true performance - paying for wheels and such you'll be replacing SERIOUSLY impacts my decision to buy a CS. The added features in the GT (electronic assists, nav, etc) are nice to have, but I could never justify losing the limited slip.
    To me the ideal car would be the GT electronics package + limited slip (a major expense that no one wants to buy two of - and a gizmo that's good enough a true "race version" isn't worth the headache, expense, maintenance etc).
    The types of "go fast" parts the home enthusiast might sway (wheels, shocks, springs, sways, probably brakes) should be split off.
    The heavier seats and any premium sound system I can't decide on - it comes down to how good they are for how much they cost/weigh.
    The options are my only solid complaint on the new car.

  • @miatatony123
    @miatatony123 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    I think the problem with a GT club sport would be price and so few people would want to spend that much on a stock miata, but it would be nice to have the option. Most people getting the GT will most likely get aftermarket parts anyways so I think just having the niceties without the performance pack is still a very good option.
