  • It has been two years since the Thai military overthrew Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra, a move it said was necessary to restore stability after years of political uncertainty.
But since then, Thailand's military rulers have been accused of rolling back democracy.
They have now unveiled the final draft of a controversial new constitution, that many argue, will enshrine the military's powers.
Thais will get to decide for themselves, when they vote on the draft, in a referendum in August.
So, will this constitution put Thailand on a path to democracy? Or further political uncertainty?

Sunai Phasuk - Senior Researcher on Thailand for Human Rights Watch
Verapat Pariyawong - Visiting scholar at SOAS, University of London
Norachit Sinhaseni - Spokesman for Thailand’s Constitution Drafting Committee

Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely

I always enjoy listening to Dr Verapat speak; subjective, reasoned and articulate. The draft constitution is a joke. One can't but help think of Big Brother and the thought police when seeing what's happening each day in Thailand: the frequent arrests of anyone critical of the present regime, the explosion of lese majeste charges, etc... Please Thai people, vote 'No' in the referendum. Give Prayut Chan-o-cha a 'red' face:-)

I'm Thai myself. It's your choice of course, but I believe in democracy and believe the prime minister should by elected, not chosen, and that the upper house, the senate, should be elected too. I want peace and prosperity for our wonderful country like you:-)

All I know is the Thai people, ALL of us, deserve to live in peace, happiness and prosperity. I want this instability and hatred to go and make our country an example to follow for the rest of Asia.

I was living in Thailand from 2007 to 2012 and what I saw wasn't a will for democracy by the Democratic party, the yellow shirts and certainly not by the military. 2010 during the protests against the coup wich toppled Thaksin and put an opponent in charge, soldiers opened fire on the streets of Bangkok and killed more than a hundred people, among them a japanese cameraman and nurses from the Red Cross. A hundred thousand rounds was handled out to the soldiers by the junta and very few if none was handed back. There's no doubt that the fight against the elected former primeminister Thaksin Shinawatra continues by the various interests who hate him and their only goal is to prevent him from ever coming back to Thailand. All the talk about corruption can't hide this fact.

Its always about this political party and that military ways... but what concerns me most is the future of Thailand who are the youths of Thailand. I have seen a huge problem in Thailand and within 10 years time this will strike bad. Its the drugs and youth crime in Thailand that is the most important issue and neither the political party or the military seem to seriously be concerned about. And the problem is not by banning drugs because there is no way drugs can be banned totally in Thailand because there are many ways drug traffickers can bring drugs inside Thailand. Through the natural borders, sea or by simply using drones which will be easily available within the next 5 or 10 years time. As internet can never be totally controlled as the Thai people are majority wise pro democratic in nature, the news regarding youth crime and drugs abuse as well as easy availability of fire arms will flash out to the rest of the world, Thailand might face the biggest disaster in future with the decrease in Tourism due to Tourists feeling insecure. And in future, the foreign businesses of tomorrow might not be interested in working with a country which has an unstable society full of crime and social problems because looking at the present day trends, most businesses have started to operate in the format of honesty rather than profit making. Hope Thai people can gather together and maybe discuss the future now because as Time seems to be moving very fast these days, maybe due to the rapid increase in technology and innovation and business in people's lives, the 10 years that seemed to play as a long duration in the past is no more a case of long duration.
