  • A short slideshow in memory of The Old Victorian Beach Station Felixstowe. Many happy memories of the late 1950`s - 60`s arriving at this wonderful old Victorian station by steam locomotive with my grandma. Sadly the station has now been demolished by greedy developer`s. A preservation society lost the chance to save this wonderful old station, they could not raise the funds in time to save it. The station was very hastily demolished before anyone realised what was happening. The land to this day is still undeveloped and overgrown, I`m sure and understanding could have been reached.Shame on the local council. Demolished but certainly not forgotten.

    Thanks for the lovely photos of a long lost station, as others have said so pointless with the developer/network rail claiming the building was unsafe(?) and a hasty demolition over a bank holiday weekend before a court order/listing could be granted..... only trimley station now exists as part of the 'tomline' line....

    One day, many years ago, 30,000 passed through this station - in one day.
    It was owned by the our railway company (the bit not sold for a pittance). They posted notice of demolition on Thursday evening prior to East Bank Holiday through the letter box at the Town Hall, as they had to give three days notice. On Easter Monda they knocked it down.

    I lived in Felixstowe and remember when the station buildings were used by a printing company. They were forced out. And, as a comment posted below said, it was demolished over an Easter weekend so as to avoid all the protests. Yes - as the comment said - by a greedy developer. But guess what? The site still has not been redeveloped. It is still a wasteland - to what purpose? Nobody is making any money out of it now - someone in SCDC needs to explain why they gave permission for these listed buildings to be trashed like they were - over an Easter bank holiday - probably the same person that authorised the closure of the Bartlet Hospital and the Spa Pavilion Theatre - ???

    @GASTEARS Thank you for that.
    I visited Felixstowe for - I am ashamed to say - the first time in my life a couple of weeks ago, and during brief drives around revelling in the Victorian grandeur, it hinted clearly at a town with a considerable railway history. And seeing the line run so near the front I searched in vain for remains of a 'Beach' station. sadly I now find only avaliable in video and photgraphic form now. I was thorougly impressed by the town as a whole, and will return v. soon!

    Sad as I pass there very often whats the point of knocking a nice building like that down?

    What is the lovely piece of music underpinning this?

    I think the old beach station is a much better location as that is what most people come to felixstowe for is the seaside, not the town! It is a considerable walk from the town to the beach even for the most able, like myself, it's quite a walk. One thing that does strike me though is, why did the keep the platform? Why was that not demolished with the rest of the building, was that in case services might return in the future?
