amen! i was brought up roman catholic in america but half my family is oriental orthodox. cannot believe my his fortune to find such a song exists as this, and in my favorite prayer, of the hesychasts... warmth + god bless u all ♥️
As a Christian who quietly found the Jesus Prayer a few years ago (not part of my church tradition), I am deeply moved by this international praying of it. And appreciate that the English translation comes last, in humility as it should considering the history of Anglo-American Christendom's role in the horrors of this world. I pray with her as best I can.
The Kyrie Eleison, Christe Eleison have mercy on us is said in the catholic mass. Many think it is Latin but it is Greek. The prayer of Jesus, prayer of the heart is a litany (kind of mantra used in the orthodox spirituality which has to be repeated all the time in order to have the presence of Jesus permanently in the heart. The real whole prayer is “Lord Jesus, son of God, have mercy on me sinner “. There is a book written by an anonymous called “the way of a Russian pilgrim” which explains how to pray and what it brings to you. This book can be found on Google for free.
So much to explore, her heart and mind I adore. Such inspiration. A muse, so true. To briefly feel her touch, to grasp. Elusive if to try, wonderful when a visit. If only evanescent, is utterly pleasant.
To those on this page spending time discussing/arguing about the spelling and pronunciation of Bjork’s name, I would like to quote Shakespeare, “That which we call a rose, by any other name would smell as sweet.” Why don’t we all concentrate on this stunning piece of music.
John 1 King James Version (KJV) 1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 The same was in the beginning with God. 3 All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made. 4 In him was life; and the life was the light of men. 5 And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not. So everyone does contain God. We cannot live without Him, se can't exist without Jesus Christ. And it's the gest thing ever! Praise The Lord! Forever and Ever! Amen.
The lyrics contain the translation, which is nice. There you go: Kyrie Iisou Christe Hie Tou Theou Eleison me Lord Jesus Christ Son Of God Have Mercy Upon Me
This song is inherently different from her other songs, yes. If you only dig the beats, this song isn't for you. This song is purely meditative, and I quite like it but dont see it as fitting in very well with the rest of the bjork narrative. What I particularly like about this piece is her use of different scales on the vocals. Her voice is great
My first thought was to type "Björk" but I chose the quick way "Bjork" and I was not aware of the German spelling, Thank You for letting me know. I by the way am half German. Auf Wiedersehen
Music is by Tavener and Björk. Text is a classic, traditional greek-orthodox prayer. Kyrie eleison, Christe eleision. Praised be the Lord, praised be the Christ.

I'm sorry I'm not Bjork, I'm a fan of hers. Bjork does not claim any religion. You can write to her on her Facebook page or at her website bjorkcom, may God bless you.
New account, so I'll answer from that: Actually, the correct spelling is "Björk". In Germany, where I'm from, the correct translation for "ö" is "oe" - that's why it says Bjoerk. Linguistically speaking, your version (Bjork) is missing the diaeresis. Wikipedia says (very rightly so): "Originally, phonological umlaut was denoted in written German by adding an e to the affected vowel, either after the vowel or, in small form, above it. This can still be seen in some names, e.g. Goethe, Goebbels".
A lot of the best singers are atheist and they do sing texts of many different religion, religion has nothing to do with the capacity of singing beautifully
Actually, its "Björk", with an ö. English doesn't have tremas, though. In Germany, ae/oe/ue are the replacements used for ä/ö/ü; thus, the title is spelled correctly.
If you mean that the Romans took what they liked of Greek culture, religion & comic books, then yes, you're correct. I'll give you a C+ & have you meet me in the school parking lot at 5:30.

You , oh Ianthor, are particularly blessed, for: It has been revealed to me that the Lord wants you now in His Holy Presence. You will see His Holy Realm tomorrow night at 2 a.m. EST. Halleluya. @abottoir: It's not at all that I am missing beats here! Most music I admire has no "beats" in this sense. The unbearable aspect (to me) is the absence of anything musically interesting in the COMPOSITION itself - Björk is brilliant even with this most unaspiring musical work imaginable, I agree! And has written some wonderfully "simple" pieces herself! I am just confused why she, as an artist, would waste her talent with this philistine composer of frugal an bleak "meditative sound clouds".
A beautiful work by Tavener. You probably won't like my opinion, but I don't think this works with Bjork's voice, even though it was written with her in mind. It seemed like it would be great with her singing, but I don't think it was. The awkwardness of her voice is ineffective here. Most any other professional singer would be better. I hate having to come to this opinion, because I really wanted it to work.
Actually Tavener himself said, in the sleeve notes, that because of the primordial quality of Bjork's voice it was his opinion that nobody else could perform this piece.
Tavener conceived this piece having Björk's voice in mind. That's a fact. What can be called "awkwardness" in her voice is actually her trademark, creating a bridge between religions, making this prayer effective from different point of view (hence the different languages): this is an aim that Tavener developed in his last years. Most any other professional singer would probably get more pathos but less primal intensity. As a mental exercise I tried to replace Bjork's voice with another one (both classical and contemporary), and I agree with Tavener: no other voice would achieve such utter plain religious sense.
this method she is using with her voice is a half-singing, half-speaking technique which, according to Icelandic folklore, is comparable to that of Old Icelandic choirmen There is absolutely no awkwardness in her voice...if you listen to her catalog, especially Unravel, you will become more familiar with this technique and the "purity" in her voice. She only uses a very specific Shure microphone to record her voice.
I'm grateful for your comment: it's not a question of whether or not I like it, but whether or not to agree with it; I don't - but not strongly so. What I do value is the calm and reasonable way you expressed your opinion and the equally calm and reasonable (other) replies to it. It's so refreshing in today's world of trolls and bigots to experience a civilised dialogue taking place. I also learned from the content of those replies. Thank you.
I think her voice works really well in this. She knows how to have control, but also let herself be full on emotional in every verse. You feel the tension and ease she goes through on it. It makes it really powerful and a true experience.
this is the very first musical work by björk I really loathe.
