They say you can’t judge a book by its cover, but sometimes with ukulele you can. I agree about the thick top. I have a spruce top Luna at a similar price range that sounds much better due to the spruce. This is more like a $100 instrument to me. Thanks for another good review Baz…DOC
In a world where even low end ukes have been improving exponentially, this one seems a throwback to the quality of 8 or 9 years ago. Seems comparable to Amazon only instruments of + or - $79.99.
Thanks for a very nice review ❤️ After attending the high mass, a new gotaukulele-review is the high point of the week. GEWA is also sold under the name VGS. They usually make very good instruments. I have 3 of them myself 😀
I’ve considered buying something from this brand for my classroom but I’m definitely glad I decided to go in a different direction after seeing this. The action alone would be a disaster for my kids.
This is exactly the kind of instrument that will NEVER make a kid fall in love with it!They were widely spread in german music schools during the 70ies,which made me hate them, both schools and instruments of that style, everything was "right" or "wrong". No fun, just cheesy, boring sadness...soo "reasonable",meh! Instruments should feel good and be fun.
Thanks for another great review. I think a majority of viewers who may have a solid spruce/ laminate instrument at this price range, may cringe at the tone. There are many manufacturers whose instruments are way nicer and have far better QC. Mine is an AnueNue UC10. This Uke run through may be the reason why I haven’t seen them in the specialist stores and won’t be seeing them any time soon. Have a great week.
The herringbone flaw leapt out at me. Overall, it seems like it functions as a musical instrument, but it’s not very inspiring is it? Thanks for the review - it sounds like this one was quite hard work.
Inspiration is absolutely the issue Paul - as I say - 15 years back this would have been a no brainer - these days? Meh..... I could spend under £100 and get something comparable - admittedly not inspiring either, but a lot less money to worry about!
Not for me and especially at that price. A LOT better instruments out there at this price point...that coral blue one over your right shoulder for instance? Thanks for the review mate, stay safe! 👍
This ukulele is a bit one dimensional, with not much character to the tone, that being said, i like the brightness of it. Always love your reviews, Baz!
Okay, so this uke didn't make you smile... but the other facial expressions it evoked were quite informative! And my cheaper formica uke sounds better.
I'm curious why this renown German musical instrument distributor would market a second rate Chinese 'instrument' and taint their reputation. You're right, the thick top and sloppy finish detracts from what a $100.00 instrument should be. Aside from the three joint neck, the neck 'appears' round and fat. Who would really pay 150 quid for this unremarkable device? On another note...your smooth, aerodynamic 'head' (haircut) is taking on wonderful qualities. 😄
I think it's a bit like Fender - they feel they 'should' have ukes, but don't know 'why' - other than wanting to be on the bandwagon. Hair - my usual summer cut, but not shaved it so short for a couple of years!
Bland looking, high action, unremarkable. We've seen Martin clones, etc. This, to me, is an Amazon clone. Much too expensive for this poor quality. Folks who do not know a thing about ukuleles should not run out to get a cheap China instrument made just to put their name on the headstock. It really debases your brand name, in my opinion. Thanks, Baz!
Baz Maz....if that ukulele was made in Germany...I'll eat my hat. Gewa have a factory in China. Stentor violins have a factory in China and the instruments are graded... The more expensive the instrument...the more detail and precision goes into making the instrument. Please do a review of a "German made" ukulele like Brüko or perhaps Kremona of Bulgaria. Perhaps you could go back to the roots of the ukulele....machete de Braga..etc. If your looking for a Rolex watch for the price of a Seconda watch....it ain't going to happen...
I know... it says so in the review... I never once said it was made in Germany. I have reviewed several Brüko ukes... and a Kremona... Thanks for the lesson.. I clearly have much to learn after all these years...
@@GotAUkulele baz maz... Your still looking for hens teeth... Everything bad is made in the Far East /China........I learnt to be humble in the Philippines. I'm not 'looking' for anything. I review ukes - high end, low end and everything inbetween. I never once said this was German or implied it was going to be better than it was. You China comment is ludicrous and very telling. Look at my review list for the highest scores - many of those went to instruments made in China. It's 2023, and you are behind the curve.

Don't think I've ever heard Baz describe the sound of an instrument as "plinky plonky" before. Thanks for the chuckle Baz!
It's an okay uke with okay sound. Too many better options in the same price point. Great review!
Sound is lacking for me
They say you can’t judge a book by its cover, but sometimes with ukulele you can. I agree about the thick top. I have a spruce top Luna at a similar price range that sounds much better due to the spruce. This is more like a $100 instrument to me. Thanks for another good review Baz…DOC
So true!
I have never heard of this brand but you are so right-- for the price there are a number of considerably better models easily available.
Good review.
I totally agree!
In a world where even low end ukes have been improving exponentially, this one seems a throwback to the quality of 8 or 9 years ago. Seems comparable to Amazon only instruments of + or - $79.99.
Agreed on both counts Edward
Thanks !
No problem!
Thanks for a very nice review ❤️ After attending the high mass, a new gotaukulele-review is the high point of the week. GEWA is also sold under the name VGS. They usually make very good instruments. I have 3 of them myself 😀
Interesting - thanks
I’ve considered buying something from this brand for my classroom but I’m definitely glad I decided to go in a different direction after seeing this. The action alone would be a disaster for my kids.
Think you can do FAR better for the same money with others
And for school, we don’t need solid tops or complex sounds. I have a variety but my kids all fight over the flight travels.
This is exactly the kind of instrument that will NEVER make a kid fall in love with it!They were widely spread in german music schools during the 70ies,which made me hate them, both schools and instruments of that style, everything was "right" or "wrong".

Instruments should feel good and be fun.
The only things I like about it are the Nubone pieces and the fret ends. I guess it could be hand painted for a ukulele painting contest…..
Yep!
Do you ever cover Ukes with a Radius Neck??
Yes, one or two over the years. The Sitka Bird I reviewed two weeks ago has a radius
Thanks for another great review. I think a majority of viewers who may have a solid spruce/ laminate instrument at this price range, may cringe at the tone. Totally agree
Sound not the best but top review as always. Have a great week Barry
Thanks, you too!
You would get a lovely anuenue concert for the price of that and it will sound 10 times better. 👍
Agreed!
With an action that high, I would expect more volume. The attack does not sound like Aquilla to me. I have heard much better for the price.
Me too!
Try not to arch your eyebrows Barry. It makes you look like Ming the Merciless. 😉Otherwise another great, fair and balanced review. 👍
🤭

Yeah the first thing I noticed was the 'GEWA' in the headstock. Looks like some kind of industrial branding. Weird design choice.
Very odd - and lazy. Same font on the bag too
Not for me and especially at that price. A LOT better instruments out there at this price point...that coral blue one over your right shoulder for instance?

Not for me either!
I think my Chinese made Kiwaya would blow this away.
Without any shadow of a doubt
This ukulele is a bit one dimensional, with not much character to the tone, that being said, i like the brightness of it. Always love your reviews, Baz!

That is the saddest excuse for a logo I've seen in a long time!
Isn’t it just?
😂
Okay, so this uke didn't make you smile... but the other facial expressions it evoked were quite informative! And my cheaper formica uke sounds better.
Ha ha!
Oh, boy!
… and it’s GCEA not GEWA … my gosh, this is inexcusable!
Ha!
What? 160 pounds???
I paid 100 pound for a Gewa concert made of solid koa...
You won't get real solid Koa for 100 - or anywhere near. The raw sheets cost more than that.

I just got from SUS an aNueNue UC-10 for less than the price of this one. This Gewa is just not good value for money anymore.
Nope!
