12:48 I really appreciate that you wear your failures on your sleeve. As a mid career professional, I think these doubts creep in no matter what industry you're in. It's nice to be reminded this happens to people you admire too.
As someone who has grown up watching the channel, I'm so happy to see you both still wearing silly costumes, running around on that roof together. No age milestone should change the way you feel about having fun with your best friends. Just because you have kids, doesn't mean you can't still be one!
adults, true adults, are just giant kids. Acting like you need to give up on fun and happiness because your an adult just gets you closer to death and losing enjoyment of life. Its why most older people still young and youthful in spirit live longer. The grumpy ones who hate everything get sick and miserable and usually accept the grim reaper their so tired of life, been tired since they turned 30 and werent physically young anymore. Sad. Lol, joking of course, point is stay happy.
"It felt great to be making a silly video on the roof with my buddies." Seriously, that is 100% of the reason this channel is so fun. There are others out there making great VFX videos for sure, but it's the vibe of having fun with your buddies that makes it so much more enjoyable. I don't do VFX at all, but can 100% relate to just hanging with friends!
That mirror gag actually rules. It's a really clever effect on its own, but it also serves a purpose! It immediately sells the rest of the resize effect.
The opening shot is sooooo good! Really felt like an old school Corridor Digital short. And NEVER feel bad about playing and having fun and using video game characters.
Sam, I get where you're coming from with the "No more Master Chief costumes after 40", but I want you to know that I for one, appreciate the Master Chief costumes. As a fellow nerd, it brings me so much joy to see you dressing up and putting in the effort to make these fantastic videos. If you didn't put on the Mario costume and go dance in the street for hours, this video would never have turned out the way it did. I see you Sam, and I appreciate all the work and effort and embarrassing moments that you put into your work to bring us such amazing content.
Regardless of what the algorithm says, this was my favorite video in years. It showed a perspective that I had never seen in a movie. I was genuinely scratching my head trying to understand how you composited it, even though I had heard the podcast prior. I started my company when I was 18y/o because I grew up watching you guys dressing up and making videos with friends in your 20s; I hope my team is still making fun videos when we are 40, just like you!
Man, Sam is such a good presenter. Maybe you've been at this for a long time, but with that comes a certain level of experience that I think we tend to take for granted in ourselves. From an outsider perspective, there is a certain level of polish on your storytelling that is definitely noticeable. Great work!
Sam. As we are the same age and i cant do all this silly stuff... Man, i am so jealous. Dont stop doing what you need to do to achieve what you want to make. This is art. You are the artist. It has to be done. Who else could be better to test out boundaries. I am proud of you.
I'm a corridor digital subscriber but I wanted to make sure to give the TH-cam version a view too. This is one of my favorite videos on the channel. It felt like an updated throwback video and after a frustrating night of 3D modeling, this reinvigorated my creative juices.
Good job getting you out of that slump, Sam! I've noticed that you haven't been most enthusiastic in CC vids for the past few months, but I'm very glad you've powered through to finish this ambitious project!
I got a question that probably nobody's gonna answer: How did the natural lighting/passage of day affect the video? I mean you covered a pretty vast area and took quite a long time on each location... Did you really have no trouble with lighting consistency? What measures did you plan to for it to go smoothly?
Each area only takes 10-20 minutes to capture max, so the lighting shift is minimal. But I did go back and try and recapture a few areas to add to the data sets, but I was 30 to 45 minutes off, and that destroyed everything. Do you know the effect of wearing polarized sunglasses and looking at a LCD screen? That’s what everything looked like. Pretty crazy.
@Orangeflava I wish it had been as you say! I couldn't put my exploded head back together and continued watching the video with my brain exposed to the air and when Sam explained the process my head was automatically putting itself back together as if the knowledge shared by Sam would trigger some sort of Wolverine style 'healing factor'. So it wasn't me who was able to put my head back together.... It was this wonderful video. The cause and the solution to my exploded head. It's the risks of learning new things. Your head can explode when you see something you don't understand, and then snap back together when you get the information that explains how it was done.
So good to watch these “classic-in-corridor-digital-spirit” videos again. You’re doing awesome Sam! Been following your channel since modern warfare and your videos still feels fresh and exciting. Fantastic mixture of cunning edge technology, cool stories and down-to-earth people. Keep rocking Corridor Digital! 🤘😀🤘
Just want to convey my deep appreciation for correcting your pronunciation of Gaussian. I know that takes a lot of conscious effort, but I genuinely think this makes a difference for inspiring people to learn about Gauss and learn some of the math, and that helps us get another generation of folks who can create these kinds of technologies. So I really appreciate you putting in that work. Thank you!
I just wanted to comment on the “mid-life crisis” section of this video (they labeled it that). This channel has genuinely brought me so much joy over the years and I love seeing how passionate all of you are about your art and it’s so cool to see the process behind how you do what you do. I understand it may seem a bit pointless and silly to run around with a Mario costume, but there are 16 million people in the world who are inspired by what you do. Keep it up ❤
The mirror trick was pretty cool. I used to operate a mirror prop for a Disney attraction. The mirror had two halves they moved in sync with the show. (Like elevator doors.) The frame could extend about twice its original size. It was also a two way mirror. It could accept projections from the back and display them on the front surface. In the end you walk through the mirror. It’s a really cool effect to see in person.
As a long time fan I love a good ole video with Sam just talking and explaining a process especially around Christmas it just fits right - Thank you corridor
I really like this format. You guys pioneered the reality tv show on youtube with corridor crew and it was very impressive how you can make narratives out of every day at the office but this felt very genuine and fun.
Just wanted to say that the sound design on that video is fantastic, really adds to the effect with the changes in sound depending on scale and location, as well as just generally sounding really good
That opening shot was so well done!! I had to rewatch it again because I hadn’t realized you grew mid speech! Super smooth and would love to see more of this!!
As much as I love involving the corridor crew in the videos, this old school "Sam & Niko" type video as well as the goofiness of the project hits me with a wave of nostalgia and I'm all for it.
It's good to hear the emotional struggle part. I think that it's important to keep an aspect of that in as it's authentic to the experience and everyone who's creative goes through patches like that. Keep it up man, you're doing well.
Takeaway: don’t cut corners, don’t be afraid to throw it all out and start from scratch, doubt is only the loudest voice in the room if you listen. Love this vid Sam and crew. Please keep wearing silly costumes and making wonderfully wild videos
I didn't expect to get so many feels. Thank you for your candor and openness. You and the team are amazing creators and have given so many people, myself included, many years of joy. Thank you for being you Sam.
You guys are really underrated. In a world where mass uploaded (daily or even a few a day) slop somehow gets in the high hundreds of thousands to low millions of views per video, Corridor Digital videos should be getting millions of views each because they are so much more interesting and extremely high effort. With those daily drama yapping videos, I find myself multitasking all the time. I can barely focus on the video. But with Corridor Digital video, my eyes are glued to the screen. You guys easily deserve 10 times the views. 100%.
idk if the bit in the middle was real, but as someone whose a long longtime fan, youre at the top of the pyramid from my point of view. youre your own boss, you get to spend time pioneering the indie-cgi space, and no one else does it like you guys, hell this video is a testament to how far youve come because you single handedly cranked out a main channel video with new techniques. I dont know what "the next step" means to you, and im sure theres lots of struggles behind the scenes but in terms of artistry, youre THE example for anyone not wanting to go industrial and work in the disney cgi sweatshops...
12:18 bro if you're still putting on the costumes and you've been doing that your whole life and still loving what you do. You're doing it right, don't change
I really like this deep dive into the creative process from Sam's perspective. A very, "no-nonsense," approach of. This is what we did... this is why... this sucked... we endured and tried again. People don't always consider what's going through the minds of people during the creative process in a space that's been untreaded fully... The roadbumps, the planning that fails, the stress, etc. Delightfully presented. Thank you for sharing all this guys!
The “Award winning.” got me 😂 it’s good to see a Sam video..been a while…and sharing you have those existential moments even someone with your talent and success is quite appreciated
I really enjoy seeing your wacky old school style videos as its reminder that being a kid at heart is OK. You embody that childhood imagination and getting to share it with friends is the best. It's also why I love your bowling challenges as it gives you guys an excuse to be creatively free and not fully anchored by current social or industry norms.
I had an idea of how you made it when I watched it, but that is only because of how much I learn from this channel. I never could have imagined how to implement it. You boys are on the cutting edge. Amazing video and beautifully oldschool
Man, it was so great to hear your honesty about going through that creative/self-doubt funk! Especially coming from such an experienced OG that so many of us have looked up to from the very beginning. Thanks so much, this was an awesome video, loved this!
You guys are being creative and making a living doing it, that is an incredible achievement in itself. You've got an audience, a staff, a building...it's pretty dang awesome.
If I may, the lesson is not "don't cut corners". The lesson is : when you do something new, always start by making a small proof of concept. GREAT WORK anyway !
holy shit, dude..... this was incredible to see and try to figure out how you did it. To see how you ACTUALLY did it, was even more incredible. You should be super proud Sam.
Not gonna lie, “stick around to end it’ll be worth it” - the end - “the videos still not done” Was not exactly the pay off I was hoping for. Still great video and awesome to see the process
What a relatable journey. It's encouraging to see people with so much skill and talent overcome the same mental roadblocks I face with my own projects.
This goes to everyone who is currently, or has been before, at corridor: the content tou have been creating, and continue to create, brings so much joy to people everywhere, and im sure I speak for many others when I say that watching these funny, silly, goofy, yet amazingly crafted, often mind-boggling and incredibly enjoyable videos has helped me so much, in terms of both taking my mind off the bad, and teaching and showing so much of the good. Thank all of you for your years of hard work and dedication, and even when it feels hard and strange and a bit crap, I hope you remember how much immense joy you have brought to so many people. All the best everyone ❤️❤️
I would LOVE to see this applied to an old Godzilla costume. It would be interesting to see what a creature originally designed for a miniaturized set looks like when given proper proportions in a truly to-scale environment. Congrats on the achievement, by the way!
It takes a lot to share fears like that. Especially when in a position of such high regard. I believe a lot of people needed to see that Sam, so thank you. Seeing that our biggest inspirations are indeed fallible only ever inspires us more.
You guys should really dip into custom camera gear too. Nowadays you can get hotend cameras for your 3D printer that are absolutely tiny, and they make the Raspberry Pi Camera Module-style sensor in 4K@60 as well. Slapping together one of those and an RPi Zero could make for an incredibly light-weight camera setup, which you could then combine with other sensors on your shoulders or side of your head for tracking. The actual computing and a battery pack could be in a backpack or something. Basically, take what's available, remove what makes action cameras difficult to produce (their form factor) and make something that's even better for a specific purpose.
While seeing the video, I thought that Sam has definately tried something new for this project, and tried to figure out what it was. Pretty quickly I thought this was a NeRF/Gaussian Spat, but then thought that the video was too long, the splats require a lot of camera coverage, and the video would probably be very time consuming The legend actually spent 4 months doing just that
Thanks for making these funny video's AND the video with the (mental) breakdown of how these funny videos get made. I especially appreciated this one because of you sharing the highs and lows and how you felt or what you thought of throughout the process.
step 1: dont care what anyone says or thinks about what your doing and how you look when making your videos, your making people happy with your videos.
I love that gaussian splats are point clouds with each pointing have more volume, color, and fluffiness (probably more than that). Give the AI fifty photos from different heights and angles, then it first puts the images in virtual space, generates a bunch of the "splats" with random values, compares what the splats show from that virtual location compared to the real images, then changes the results. Takes a lot of time to generate, but the end results are then super fast to use. What's cool is you can use high detailed CGI renderings to also generate gaussian splats. I know Nvidea released a program that uses this concept and takes the best of both worlds that photogrametry and gaussian splats offer (balancing speed and fidelity) with rendered settings, so expecting far better things from film makers making use of this.
I just found out Sam is 46 and I think he has a fountain of youth potion or somethin' in his wizard pockets because he doesn't look a day over 30! Major props to still havin' a goof and havin' a laugh in this world because that's the hardest thing to consistently do. 👏
Thanks for sharing, Sam. Your insight into the toll this had on your psyche was something I wasn't expecting. It was very touching and inspiring. Thank you.
I'm sorry I'm not subscribed to the main channel... it's just so much more fun to see this behind the scenes stuff at the same time while the main channel video drops.
4:26 here's my guess. They're going to in some form use the splat to create a 3d environment. And then make a rough layout of their environment with cardboard boxes. They will then capture themselves acting on the life sized "mini" set. For camera motion then scale the motion up to fit the height of their giant so you get the fluid motion of the camera like you're walking around.
Obviously it was way more complicated than my og comment but still pretty close. Definitely closer than I would have gotten without watching y'all since I was 12 lol.
I would have made a set with small sized buildings and objects, then applied Tilt-Shift to a load of elements to make those things look tiny. Film people walking around and doing actions from above, then cut them out and put them on the floor around where Big-Mario is standing. Exactly like @ 3:20 It's just an excuse to use Tilt-Shift because I love it so much.. it's my all time favourite lens effect.
You know that all the tenants on Hunter Street have a great time watching you all run around like lunatics. I just wish Corridor had been there when I was spending so much time working at the Dependable Building as their mechanical contractor. I got exactly zero enjoyment out of that. I could have had so much fun either watching you, or helping you do these wonderful videos. It would have been awesome. The point of my comment is, that sometimes, doing things wrong is necessary in order to do things right. Keep going. I'm excited for you and your work.

Thank all of you for your years of hard work and dedication, and even when it feels hard and strange and a bit crap, I hope you remember how much immense joy you have brought to so many people. All the best everyone ❤️❤️
Both this documentation and the actual end video result are incredible. Love the honesty on display here too. Keep up the amazing work!
OMG I'm so proud of you guys, pronouncing Gaussian like pros
While seeing the video, I thought that Sam has definately tried something new for this project, and tried to figure out what it was. Pretty quickly I thought this was a NeRF/Gaussian Spat, but then thought that the video was too long, the splats require a lot of camera coverage, and the video would probably be very time consuming
The legend actually spent 4 months doing just that
*definitely
Thanks for making these funny video's AND the video with the (mental) breakdown of how these funny videos get made.
I especially appreciated this one because of you sharing the highs and lows and how you felt or what you thought of throughout the process.
Incredibly creative through and through, one of the best shorts Corridor has ever put out. Congrats!
step 1: dont care what anyone says or thinks about what your doing and how you look when making your videos, your making people happy with your videos.
Thank you.
That mirror gag was great. More reflections in the next scale video!
Sam, this is so awesome man, i love your take on cutting corners. Looking forward to see what you and everyone else in corridor do next.
I'm sorry I'm not subscribed to the main channel... it's just so much more fun to see this behind the scenes stuff at the same time while the main channel video drops.
That intro was SO well done! The problem is Sam is just too engaging so I didn't notice him getting larger until it was too late
the opening shot is just AMAZING, subtle, but amazing
That Wren compliment made me smile
Classic Corridor! This is one of the best reason why Sam and Niko are LEGENDS!
My initial guess too, havent seen the video
Thank you for pronouncing Gaussian correctly. I appreciate the dedication to improvement, and I see you.
I love these breakdowns. Thanks for sharing the entire process you went through. Great video
I love a Sam episode, he is exceptional in his vision and communication skills. I am engaged for the whole video!
I would have made a set with small sized buildings and objects, then applied Tilt-Shift to a load of elements to make those things look tiny.
Film people walking around and doing actions from above, then cut them out and put them on the floor around where Big-Mario is standing. Exactly like @ 3:20
It's just an excuse to use Tilt-Shift because I love it so much.. it's my all time favourite lens effect.
