  • An Olympic diver struggles to return to the pool after a training accident.
BLOOD AND WATER is used with permission from Brian Blum. Learn more at bloodandwatermovie.com.
Aspiring Olympic diver Garrett Delaney was born to compete on the world stage, and his mom Tracy has been training him for it his entire life. But a near-death accident in practice shakes his faith in that dream. With Olympic trials only two weeks away, he fears he must make a decision: give up or die trying.
BLOOD AND WATER boasts stellar production values, sharp camerawork and a charismatic lead screen presence by bona-fide 2016 Olympic silver medalist Steele Johnson, lending the film a degree of gritty authenticity and impressiveness.
The story is inspired by director Brian Blum's own experience as a competitive diver. After his head collided with a springboard during a routine dive, he took three years to recover psychologically from the accident. His experience lends the storytelling a degree of emotional specificity, transforming the typical comeback story into a riveting portrait of courage and resilience.

Here's what's interesting. The diver is played by Steele Johnson, a real olympic diver who did suffer a life threatening injury when he was young. So this story is something he somewhat experienced.

I used to do a form of gymnastics called tumbling. I was fairly good at it, but every few years I would think about how terrifying what I was doing was. There would be a few weeks or months where I'd go to do a run and I'd just stop. My coaches weren't particularly supportive. About 4 months ago I fell out of love with the sport and quit. I'm glad I did, a good decision.

"Blood is thicker than water." - Sir Walter Scott
Because he understood his mum's difficult position (both as a coach and as a mum, and how they are supposed to be different roles and have different responsibilities in his life), he wanted to preserve his relationship with his mum (the most important) and although it was at the breaking point whereby his mum's harshness (blood ties) was what was needed to motivate him to get back on track, it was also what was stopping him (13:03, he identified the conflict between blood and water). And therefore at the end, he changed his coach (separating water and blood, both figuratively and emotionally) before resuming his pursuit of dreams in diving.

That mom is the worst mom I have seen. Yes she is trying to make her son like her but that doesn’t mean you force him to do a high dive.

Any time I watch a diving competition on tv, this is the one thing that always runs through my head. I keep thinking one of these days someone is gonna hit their head on the diving platform.

I liked the story and every aspect of it, but I had difficulty taking the characters seriously when ever they spoke, it felt kind of dull, generic you could say, still very well done and motivational none the less

yea the characters seemed very newbie like when just talking to each other. they acted the other aspects pretty well
