  • A young swimmer is attacked by classmates.
FIND THE LIGHT is used with permission from Abdullah Khan. Learn more at rosebudfilms.com.
Zak is a young British-Pakistani man who was recently viciously attacked by a group of his classmates. Traumatized by the violence and already reeling from the instability at home, Zak feels utterly alone.
Swimming at a local pool, Zak ponders the unthinkable. But a friendly, sympathetic lifeguard - the only one who notices Zak’s wounds - comes to his rescue in more ways than one.
Directed and written by Abdullah Khan, this empathetic short drama captures the desolation and hopelessness of a young man who has been relentlessly persecuted by his peers. With its beautiful, lyrical imagery that oscillates between the thoughtfully naturalistic to the more abstract and poetic, the film portrays an inner landscape full of pain and isolation - so much so that it drives Zak to the brink.
Opening with an impressionistic but brutal rendering of the attack, the storytelling focuses on how Zak is haunted by trauma, depression and fear afterward. Keeping the tone from veering into outright melodrama, the dialogue is pared down and the details are often subtle, but certain details are laid out precisely: Zak’s social isolation, a parent so mired in depression that she doesn’t notice her son’s injuries and a general atmosphere of emotional poverty.
With such crippling loneliness and haunting pain, Zak succumbs to feelings of hopelessness and worthlessness, a terrible combination that causes him to entertain thoughts of self-destruction. Actor Jaysol Doy plays Zak with admirable restraint, foregoing hammy emoting in favor of a more subtle yet precise descent. We can see the life drain out of him, slowly but surely, and when he goes to a local pool to take action, we are dismayed but not surprised.
But at Zak’s lowest point, hope comes in the form of a lifeguard, the first person to really notice and acknowledge Zak’s injuries and offer a sympathetic ear. Played by acclaimed actor George Mackay, it’s a small but crucial part - one that also demonstrates that help and kindness can come from anywhere and anyone, and that sometimes the first spark of hope comes when we don’t look away from pain, but look at it clearly, steadily and without judgment.
Focusing on the psychological and poetic, FIND THE LIGHT ends with a series of scenes and images that are almost symbolic or allegorical in their potency. There is no life-changing conversation, no miraculous lifting of burden. Instead, the dynamic change in both Zak and the story comes from within, from a renewed sense of meaning and hope. He realizes he is not the only one suffering from discrimination or persecution for being who he is. But the beginning of hope comes from truly seeing what’s going on, acknowledging it instead of looking the other way or keeping silent and then extending a hand. Sometimes it takes just that one hand to make enough of a difference.

literally made me cry. it always feels like youre the only person who could ever go thru things during the struggle, but once you realize you’re closing yourself off when you need help the most, things get a little brighter. while i struggled w sh, no one was there for me like that, but i am beyond thankful I used my family to lean on before it was too late. just one or two ppl that love you can make a humongous difference and i resonated with that scene more than anything I’ve seen in a short film. definitely my fav part too

What a fabulous young actor and a hard hitting video. I was bullied almost to suicide (psychological bullying) as a teenager. My son was bullied in primary school to the extent he did not want to go to school (and had enjoyed it before). Both of us along with my daughter (his older sister) started karate together. It improved our self confidence. I reported him being bullied (with his permission) myself. My son became confident again. Bullying cannot be tolerated under any circumstances whether in school, work or home. It can kill.

My son was bullied in 4th grade (nowhere near to this extent). When one of his friends told me this had been going on IN THE CLASSROOM, I went up to the school and told the teacher that I wanted a conference with him, the principal, and the bully's parents. I told them the next time a person dare to bully/push my son, it would be their last. Did I threaten them? Damn right! And I told them all that I was informing the police that they allowed violence in the classroom. They thought I was crazy...and I was. You mess with my kids, I promise you'll regret it. Today my son is 27, 6ft2 weighing 240 lbs. Nobody messes with him. lol

Omg im in tears here, I feel so sorry for this boy as he represents all the kids out there who get beaten to a pulp because they are another colour or they are a different religion etc. This boy was black and blue and then went home to his ailing mum. How sad but it happens too much and it needs to stop. What a powerful video and the ones who were the bystanders were as much to blame than the ones doing the beating. Its so horrible and upsetting. Kudos to the actors in this short film, I really do hope it makes a different as there are kids out there scared to death and frightened to tell someone. I really hope if anyone is going through this gets help and tells someone as it is a crime. Message to the ones who are suffering like this boy ... Please tell someone there is a light at the end of the tunnel. Xx xX

A film should be evaluated according to what its creators intended to achieve. In that respect, I believe this film is very successful in depicting the negative consequences of discrimination and bullying. I’m confident that it will play its part in educating audiences about the harmful effects of these behaviors and encourage people to get involved. Good script, good cinematography, good direction and good acting (I was pleased to see George MacKay).

You will never be able to solve this supposedly problem of "bullying & discrimination " in any other way, other than individuals immersed in that kind of world finding some form of solution, be that some form of violence, debate, carrying on, avoidance of self-harm, minimal 3rd party intervention, self-preservation, education, success and probably other things as well.
This is a cruel world, don't think otherwise, roses are covered in thorns for god sake, fruits on trees are far from us. Yet i interject, is that not beautiful. Change is at a cost, the bully or the victim, the cards will turn , and you can live to see the day of reckoning, the bully will be the victim ill promise you that, bittersweet time will take its toll. Gold was mended in millions of years.
Choose to live through the pain, choose to fight, choose to never give up and if you fail not due to your own hands , you will live an eternal life among warrior !
