Since I got a 3d printer I don’t have a pile of shame. Due to extremely low prices, I really have no guilt about my file sizes. Cheers to a revolution in the hobby!
The person that says each mini is a part of them, I can 100% understand this. Each mini I paint is I guess a part of me. My time, my ideas, my accomplishments, my errors, my improvements, and in a way it's family.
Just get rid of the "shame" part. I'm glad I have a backlog. Sometimes I want to paint, sometimes I want to model. And also, I might have limited time, just gabbing a character and getting that off the sprue and building it was a fantastic help for me just last night. I was still full of stress from acreally busy day and it took me enough time to nicely unwind, but not so much that I didn't t have enough time left to sleep. 😊 I have a couple of boxes that I can build whenever, a bunch of built grey stuff, some undercoated/zenithalled up stuff, an army done to my lowest tabletop standard ( to grab a unit every now and then and go ham on just cool details) and another actual finished army ( where I can occasionally just add a single unit too) Variety is the spice of life. Be without shame and enjoy yourself. ❤
Our hobby is a process. Not any (single) end goal. Look at it this way: would you be happy with having only finished models? No! You would definitely want to have something to paint, something to build, something to look forward to, or just cool bits for the bits box. 😎 Your library ( liked that one too) or backlog is just a part of it.
I am extremely lucky to have lots of hobby time. I work full-time but I have no restrictions on my spare time. Child is grown up and living her own life. Wife left a few years ago. I paint nearly everyday and play 2-3 times per week. And I don't expect to ever get to a point where everything is painted and that is okay.
I appreciate these videos on changing the mindset behind these piles/files. I personally have found that when my group schedules a game and we build our army list we need to paint that list only. I am currently running a Saurian list but not everything has been painted yet and that, for a time, brought with it some anxiety. Now that I've switched to only worrying about getting my list done in time, I find that I feel accomplished and look forward to the next game/list because I will only need to complete a few more units. As time goes on, eventually, I will have the entire army completed because I've decided to use each unit at some point. This has opened me up to having time for terrain and other add-ons to the hobby. Thanks again for another supportive video, keep up the good work!
I've been working on StationForge Grim Guard recently and since I finally adopted the "good enough" mentality on my minis I've gone from having 3 painted minis to over 100. Now I can pump out 10-20 minis a week without too much effort and my friends all say they look good!
As you grind through your troops have a fun model ready to paint and as you batch paint stop every once in a while and paint a monster or character you really like. Break up the monotony of batch painting. Put on an audiobook or podcast really helps get in the zone. And get an airbrush if you can, it is a turbo button for batch painting and priming.
If there was any silver lining to the COVID lock downs and my own subsequent unemployment, it was that it afforded me the opportunity to tackle my own 'pile of shame' in anticipation for when my gaming group would eventually get together again. I was highly motivated, and had lots of time to tackle my projects. Between 2020-2022, I painted over 900 models. Many of them had been sitting around, unbuilt/unpainted, for nearly 20 years. The whole situation was bittersweet.
Sorry to hear that you were one of the job casualties of that whole thing. I'm glad you were at least able to have something positive coming out of it. And 900 models! Wow!
@@Good.Nuff.Gaming Thank you so much. And indeed, there was something positive: when my gaming group and I were once more able to get together, our games since have been absolutely spectacular.
I am a member of the miniatures collectors tier of patreon for OPR and i have tones of stls already. So many! I dont even have a printer but someday i might and when that day comes i will have soo many choices. I feel like that is smart from a financial stand point. But then again i might never get a printer then all is lost lol. I am getting stls for pennies though so its worth it to me.
I try to assemble my models asap, because then I can play with them. I then try to organise a catch-up with my gaming friends, which motivates me to paint at least some of the models towards that catch-up. I also have some armies where I paint everything to the best standard I can, and others where I just try to get it painted.
I have no pile of shame... I am without shame and therefore shame free! I do have a pile (really it's a shelving unit {or three} with bins filled with projects in progress), of opportunity though... and a hard-drive of opportunity as well. For me, working on Minis is my safe place, my happy place; so having a backlog of stuff to work on is an investment in good mental health and far cheaper than a 'ead shrinka!
For me I tie my hobby to audiobooks. I am working through the horus heresy series and I only let myself listen to the audiobooks when I am hobbying so that whenever I want to listen these awesome books then I have to be hobbying at the same time.
I started a hobby vlog 😂 It’s not great but at least in my mind it motivates me to stick to a deadline. So far I’ve made my first deadline (and made the video as a ‘reward’) and I’ve got a strong start on my next goal. And as to files vs piles, piles kill me unless it’s something I view as something I need to get better at before painting. Files I collect in a vast horde and have no regrets about. No physical space, no problem.
I did a clean break, sort of. After AoS came out I played less and less and 5+ years of not playing lead to finally coming to selling my Dwarf collection. I made someone very happy...50k of Dwarf army, which let me then use that cash and buy my 3D printers, so while my collection was gone the option to come back was still there
My approach has been to catalogue my models in Excel. I needed to do this original for insurance purposes then I realised that I'd need to up date my file when I bought new stuff. Then I realised it would be easy to also track what was painted vs unpainted, then what I never have intention to paint ie old marines that have been stripped. I use the excel to work it out how much I have painted and now it's a game in its self. How close can I get to 100% currently of the 880 odd module intended to be painted 97% are complete to a point that they're done. Make a game out of finishing it😅
Just out of curiosity, what's your profession? You sound like a very orderly and organized person who does something similar for work, because you're the first to suggest record keeping like that. It's a good idea, I just know for me I'd slack on updating as much as painting.
I own a quilt shop (and yes, I am also a gamer!), and quilters have much worse "piles of shame" (we call it a fabric stash). I have customers who own more fabric than I do, and they aren't selling it!
I understand that not all of my minis need to be high quality and that most people will not notice if the are, but I will and I want to be proud of my armies.
On the subject of paying someone else to paint, you don't want to be on the other side painting your buddy's models instead of your own. Especially when they want some old boardgame painted that's all the same sculpts. I don't want to talk about it lol.
Ive painted my friends entire genenstealer cult army and haven't touched my own stuff in months lol. On the bright side I got paid to practice and he's quite lax on the design so I had quite a bit of free reign
I have hundreds of gigs worth of zipped files. I love collecting them, especially if I know they’ve been nuked :) If anyone has a Thanatar STL tho please hit me up I’ve been searching for a while
@@Good.Nuff.Gaming It's been working for now for sure. For sites like MMF and Gumroad I don't usually back them up for exactly that reason unless I think they'd get turbo nuked for some reason.

I really do think subscription services are where miniatures are heading, like many other business models.

Yep. That's a point I made in the first video. I always have a project at the various stages, so whatever I'm in the mood for I can work on.

Definitely. I've burned through tons of books that way. And good advice on breaking up the batch painting with something more exciting.
I like to think of myself as a collector...and I dabble in 3d printing.
Loving the short videos with interesting subject matter to get me through the week.

Great idea. It keeps the desire to paint alive, and you have something to look forward to.
Dont dam the river, redirect it. Fantastic idea. Thank you. Also selling half the pile to get the other half commission painted is genius

I do find it hard to juggle work/family with hobby time. Some weeks I only manage 3 or 4 hours of painting but I guess some is better than none
3-4 hours is better than nothing. But I hear you that family responsibilities come first.
Shame has a specific and powerful meaning in my life of work.
I like to reframe this as my pile of potential! Pile if opportunity!
It helps me. Ymmv.
I understand that not all of my minis need to be high quality and that most people will not notice if the are, but I will and I want to be proud of my armies.
Love the vids
Thats why most people nowadays call it a pile of potential
Gotta catch ‘em all 😂
Not really sure why people have so much trouble painting. I have never had a pile of shame.
It may be true that nobody is going to notice all the details or lack thereof from one meter away. But I will know and it will bother me.
True dat. The most important person the models need to please is the owners.
What do you do when your completed mini collection is too big to fit anywhere? Asking for a friend of course
You buy another house, obviously. Best if you can get your neighbors. Then you don't have to go as far to get to your stuff.
See I don't see my files that I don't plan building a shame I see it as I'm supporting OPR

That's true, if you do too much commissioning then it becomes work and you never want to paint your own. Was it Zombicide by chance?

@@CAMSLAYER13 I have 2 SSDs and an HDD just in case
Good plan. I don't know if every STL site is like MMF and gives you permanent access to your purchases so you can always download them again.

What about giveaways?
I'm thinking about those for the 1 year anniversary.
@@Good.Nuff.Gaming Nice! I can't wait to see where that goes
Or do what I see a lot of people doing…and play with unpainted minis. What a REAL shame!
