I love that the Eaves specials are all about real-world how's and why's. It took half of the show for the guys to realize, "John's not into the in-universe stuff." :)
I appreciate that more because I think some fans need to realize that at the end of the day, this stuff was made for shows & movies with budget and production concerns in mind. "Canon" hardly factors into it so getting into a twist of why stuff is in universe isn't worth it.
Don't tell me, Tuesday? I love the Excelsior so much. It just feels elegant and classy to me. It's gorgeous and I would choose it over an Nx, a Constitution, an Ambassador, a Galaxy, an Intrepid, a Defiant, and a Sovereign class. The Excelsior was my grandfather's favorite Star Trek ship, he died in 2016. So this ship reminds me of him. It's not my favorite though, my favorite is Star Trek Online's Odyssey class.
This guy wouldn’t know canon if you shot him in the face with it. All jokes aside, this was a very interesting video. The Excelsior class is my favorite class of Federation ship. I think it was this class that made me fall in love with the franchise.
The Lakota is really simple to explain, that episode was filmed after the Excelsior model was permanently modified, they needed the higher quality model because it would be filmed close up so they couldn't use an off the shelf kit.
Perhaps the pre-refit Excelsiors had already been mothballed prior to Enterprise-B, or were left unfinished (as with 6 Galaxy-class hulls), and were quickly reactivated/finished when the Dominion War kicked off?
+Nimmo1492 I don't think so. We saw TONS of non-refit Excelsiors before the war: the Hood, the Cairo, the Malinche, the Melbourne, the Repulse, the Potemkin, etc
+toddsmitts Alternatively perhaps the "refit" wasn't a refit at all, just an alternative configuration for specific mission parameters. Maybe the original Excelsior was kitted out to be a science vessel (as in The Undiscovered Country), while the Enterprise is fitted out to be a deep space exploration vessel, requiring extra storage etc.
As I suspected, the reason for the extra impulse power was merely to be different than the Excelsior ( no logic at all, after all, we are talking about ILM) and the designer had no idea if she wa a new class ship or a refit from the Excelsior. I like very much the "improved" secondary hull but in my opinion this she doesn´t deserve to carry the name Enterprise.
My favorite big lass. Such a shame CBS/Paramount model storage warehouses mistreat the beauties, I wish CBS/Paramount would make their own museum with all the physical models outside of their boxes. Glad the Smithsonian has the ol Connie 😁
+Captain Lokiawa hehe I dont see why not :). If the Smithsonian was able to get permission to preserve the connie as a display model then why not the other models too hehe :).
The Excelsior class was supposed to have an expected service life of 80 years. and as for the idea of why the B and the Lakota has the mods and other did not?... economics? hey even star fleet has a budget.
Maybe. Star fleet is the United States Navy in space. so please bear in mind the navy reference. In comparison to real world ships. The U.S. Navy had to ship that were similar the Essex and Ticonderoga class .the were essentially the same ship one of the main differences Was the hull length. the Ti was longer and the were dubbed Essex Long hulls were the originals we called Essex class Short hulls. They were both aircraft carriers from WWII and post WWII they served at the same time and were. But it would be believable, that both would be around for a number of years together in the fleet and since the next generation is roughly 87 years after Kirk and Spock took there final mission in 2291 It would be possible that you would see both ships at the beginning of the next gen it would be feasible that the Excelsior class would still be seen in the fleet. although the original is gone by this point they probably had produce a significant number for the fleet and they would be the backbone of the fleet until the Ambassador class cam about. The class would have be produce for a number of years and representatives of both styles would be seen the first style would probably be lesser in number but still cost would be a factor
I like the B if only because with out it the C's Prototype Ambassador wouldn't exist. th-cam.com/video/IeU0Ua4ASPE/w-d-xo.html Which I am very fond of, The Excelsior is a good ship for the big screen and the B was too - but the Ship was only really shown off well once on TV that I can recall. (excluding the reuse of stock footage).
One thing that's bothered me about Star Trek is the uss Modern day navy we know Uss is American But in Star Trek with it now also being united federation of planets wouldn't it be UFP-Enterprise yea not as catchy but after awhile it would catch on But USS suggests that the United States was finally successful in world domination
Maybe not domination but leads the world into a better tomorrow. add the fact in who has the best navy in the world. we produce more ships than other countries. we have the infrastructure and the know how. Of course if we coud put it into a UN comparison we front 80 % of the budget, troops and equipment for us to have an equal say as the other members of the United nations..
memory-alpha.wikia.com/wiki/USS "Roddenberry had to actually mount a vigorous defense of the meaning of his new amended prefix [United Space Ship] against chauvinistic network executives who were lamenting why it could not be 'a good, safe patriotic United States spaceship.'"
I always thought the Excelsior was a bad joke (just like the bad comedy writing in all Trek films). And I was right. It's the most ludicrously bad ship design in SciFi.

Precisely.
Those movie shots with the models are far superior detail than CGI, imo.
Yup I feel it lost alot of it's soul when it went fully cgi/digital for ships. I kind of get why they did but still...
All i can say that the Enterprise B was quite a neat looking ship and fitted perferctly into the linage of Enterprises that came before and after it.

all the ships of the Star Trek universe are nice looking ships
Great video.
Everything Eaves designs looks like something from a comic book. Sometimes it wrks like the Big-B... other times... *looks at some of the disco ships*
Did you guys ever have Rick Sternbach talk about the Vor'Cha? I seem to remember that, but I can't find it.
🖖😎👍Very cool and very nicely well done indeed and very informatively explained and executed indeed 👌.

Revkor There's no canon evidence that the Ambassador didn't exist earlier than the 2340's.
I like the enterprise-b a good starship that like the enterprise-c should have more story telling and more about both crews.
They probably just used the big model for Lakota because it was a better quality model & it was the focus of the scene, not a background ship.

The fins were my favorite part of the design. I think the retro fit looks better than the Excelsior design.
Very cool video.
Interesting.
Wow, 6 years ago, you guys are very different 🖖🇨🇦
@Trekyards ah ok Stuart about the in cannon why we don't se the EXCL Refit much ........ 14:12
I love hearing about the designing the 1701-B with John Eaves (Complete)
I'm curious to what the cardboard cutout behind Mr. Eaves is.
+rangerjima me too

That's a cool pick
+Shawn McDonald Thanks!
Seeing the NX on eXcelsior was the first time I realized the CC from NCC1701 must stand for Constitution Class
Naval Construction Contract
My favorite big lass.

+Captain Lokiawa Or in today's world release 3-d printer model kits basically?
Marcus
Agreed.
+Captain Lokiawa hehe I dont see why not :).
If the Smithsonian was able to get permission to preserve the connie as a display model then why not the other models too hehe :).
indeed.
FLAME4564 But they probably made scans of the models and have that data digitally around?
I love the 1701-B, I'd take that over Voyager any day 😁
Since the old one is excelsior or always thought the B should be “zenith” class
Love the original excelsior not the B, the excelsior is sleek and deadly.

I would mix and match features myself.
I'd prefer Excelsior-Alpha Class.
Wow so the company split was causing ship issues.... back then.
I like the B if only because with out it the C's Prototype Ambassador wouldn't exist.

as usual it turns out that everything in the production of this movie was arranged about beeing convenient lazy and cheap

US Navy - United States Ship
Starfleet - United Star Ship

You have to have a dick to make that claim Darren fartagan. :) have a nice fantasy

I guess Memory Alpha isn't NPOV, eh? :P

I'm sorry, I've always hated the Excelsior class. it's damn fugly.
