Yes! The Sovereign Class is my favorite Starfleet ship class and the Enterprise E, my favorite Enterprise. I love just about everything about the design of this ship: the lines, the curves, the balance, the minimized "neck", the weapons load out, the support craft. I wish it would have been seen in more than just three feature films; it looked so stately from almost any angle. Strong, stately, and swift.
My personal favorite of them all. The E was just beautiful, illustrious, sublime and yet cool, awesome and bad-ass at the same time. I wish we would have experienced a few more adventures with her on the big screen.
Most beautiful Enterprise
In a related story, the sovereign class was at the center of a controversial discrimination suit by dolphin Starfleet officers protesting the removal of the whale tanks from the Federation flagship....
Dolphin lives matter...
@@werhnerwangra I heard there was a settlement in the case. I wonder what their class action suit did for them?
Was there a porpoise to the lawsuit, or did they do it just for the halibut?
Everyone's favourite ship. It's perfect in every angle.
it's not mine, never liked this one. I preferred the Galaxy, Ent J or Tos look myself.
Never liked the ship, thought it was a backwards step. Most of the other new smaller classes look better.
The exterior is good, I prefer D or Voyager since movies never seem to hit the part I like in the series, but my biggest issue is I never liked this one's bridge
I like it but it's not my favorite. Galaxy class all the way. Replace the torpedo's with quantums. That would be a sweet and deadly ship.
I'm completely in love with the Nemesis version of the E, and I'm really happy you guys have decided to show it off!
Such a beautiful ship. It is, imo, the best starship design of all time. I only wish we got to see it more, like we got to see so much of the Enterprise D in TNG show.
The Enterprise E in my favorite ship
one of the best space ship designs of all time. top ten period.
The Enterprise E *is* a reincarnation of the TOS E in certain respects.
The balance of the pieces, longer engines sweeping back. The blue quantums coming out of the nose on the saucer (very in tune with the way the torpedoes used to fire out of the TOS E.)
The dish fits into that design concept.
Great episode. One of my favorite ships.
The E has been my favorite, ever since it was introduced. I just wish there were more movies or episodes with it, so we could get to know it better.
Maybe the darker hull colour with very visible Aztecing is ablative hull armour, what if the E wasn't built with ablative armour built in, so she went in for a refit to add that
Jaden Desveaux That's precisely the case. It went through a refit during the Dominion War, shortly after Insurrection. It was made even more battle prone
Novo Eduardo AC. I thinkduring that refit it had 5 more phaser banks and 2 more torpedo bays too.
@@novoeduardoac1248 To be fair..Insurrection made it clear that the rear facing armament of the Sovereign class is lacking..for lack of a more civilized term :D
@@curseofgladstone4981 4 Phaser Arrays(pylon mounted),and 6(visibly only 5) photon torpedo launchers
Best ship in the fleet!
Interesting that the Sovereign isn't just smaller than the Galaxy, it actually seems quite a lot smaller than the Ambassador as well!
That leap in tech between the Ent B and Ent C is something I'd love you guys to speculate on. Star fleet must've viewed the Ambassador class as quite the accomplishment!
It's actually longer than the D, given its nacelle length thus it's longer than the C.
@@louisvarre2197 it's a really scaled down ship focusing more on more Starfleet mission specific projects.
Just getting around to watching this one as I had a very busy Christmas. Thank you gentlemen.
I was also too young to see First Contact when it came out, I was 10 years old and First Contact was a 12 rating. Generations was the first Star Trek movie I was able to see in the cinema and because of how big a fan of Star Trek I was, my parents told the guy at the ticket desk I was 12 to get me in. I will always be thankful to them for that. When that first shot of the E in the nebula came onto the screen I still remember my jaw dropping. Loved it straight away.
The shuttlebay area was changed between the FC and Nemesis versions, some side walls and integration with the secondary hull, also the warp nacelle pylons were angled higher for the Nemesis version. I remember reading that if there had been another TNG movie after Nemesis, they might have reintroduced the traditional Aztec plating to the hull. Looking forward to Part 2 :)
The Enterprise E was pretty sweet looking in the nebula shot in First Contact. Very appropriate shot for the hero ship. And of course the E was just so awesome anyway. The battleship of Starfleet and packed with the best that Starfleet had to offer in technology and crew. Just what a flagship should be. Wasn't the warp drive design on the E designed to reflect efficiency and power, but also the whole "subspace pollution" thing?
I've always loved the E. Ever since seeing it in First Contact in 96 after getting out of high school. The fact it hearkened back to the Constipation Class 1701/-A with a modern update. Turning the saucer from the D sideways was very clever from a design point. Gave it a sleekness . I just didn't like it from the front profile. Looked odd.
Also the deflector dish was colored copper/yellow to evoke the TOS Enterprise from what I remember reading at the time.
.... constitution?
Oh I'm sure that the U.S.S. Constipation would have been a very famous ship if only it could have been pushed out of space dock.
@@brianwelden6034 This comment deserves more likes..
Had to re-watch the deflector dish battle. Could not remember them showing the underside of the saucer section but they did. Great shot. :-)
I currently am using the Noble-Class variant of this ship in STO. It's really good & pretty durable for what I usually end up doing. The only time it's failed me was in the Tholian Red Alert in Sector Space. Me & my team got slaughtered so much, they ended up camping our spawn & slaughtering us before we could fight back with any reasonable chance of success. We ended up failing the Alert by way of the timer ending... Though I survived the Borg Red Alert 3 separate times the same day....
i loved this ship this was so much more advanced then the enterprise d. i loved this design for the enterprise e.
I love what you guys do... just please remember that ILM has cared about form over function for a loooooong time. The Nascelles are longer just because the artist thought it better balanced the design. Maybe Utopia Planetia designers work the same? Trekkies like us see it and wonder "oooooh! why?" when the only answer is: "Because the cats we put on the project said so." Keep it up, guys!
In fact, the further we go, you guys keep pointing out nonsensical design flaws that all add up to "It's for a movie, make it pop!" Man. Something about the old Star Trek vibe just gets further and further away... You can feel the Phantom Menace plaguing even the Enterprise. If only I were a Q.
I always took the Nemesis design as a logical update to the Sovereign class during and following the Dominion War. If you think of Naval designs, the first ship of a class is quite different from one rolling off of the line today. Think of it this way - what we saw in Nemesis was a "block 2" update of the original Sovereign Class and the updates were received between Insurrection and Nemesis - quite a few years passed between the two movies in universe.
Regarding the plethora of torpedo launchers, I always took it as the additional launchers (particularly, the ones just below the bridge fore/aft) were likely micro torpedoes (e.g. Runabout) or dedicated to probes. This would free up space in the armories down below for photons or quantums.
And the deflector dish looks different because quite literally the original was blown up in First Contact. :)
ya dont need the nacells. it needs to be battleship!
A beautiful next generation of starship design complimented by the Nova and Prometheus classes IMHO.
I really like the orange deflector.
Sorry about the spelling small phone screen
First Contact was my first Trek in theaters.
My first trek in theaters was insurrection T_T.
Never seen Insurrection in theaters. It didn't look good to me, but when I did see it, it was on a video tape I got for Christmas, and despite most fans criticizing it, I actually really liked it. In fact it's my favorite one to date. I so wanted to see Nemesis, but didn't get the chance until it came out on video, but I really liked that one too. My next Trek in theaters was Star Trek (2009), which despite some things I didn't like about the film, I still enjoyed it.
Same here I enjoy Insurrection, Nemesis and the JJ treks lol. but maybe thats because I am not an Og trek fan I am only 28 years old XD. I was raised with trek though some of my earliest memories are of me and my dad watching the next gen when I was vary young lol.
If I were a Starfleet public relations officer, I'd tell the captain to light every single feature on a ship before taking a publicity shot. But I agree with you two, shouldn't be the case during battle.
The Enterprise-E ties for 3rd with the Enterprise-D, as my favorite Enterprise (TMP being #1, and TOS being #2). It is one sleek ship! I was surprised when I found out how small the Enterprise-E is compared to the Enterprise-D. I had thought the saucers were the same size. I prefer the First Contact version of the Enterprise-E. I wish we could have seen a completed repaired version of the Enterprise-E after the end of Nemesis.
The Chain of Command episodes are some of my favorites.
I like the enterprise D
i wish the E had the bent nacelle struts of the Galaxy or Excelsior. Those ships look balanced to me, where the V struts look like the ship will fall over to one side or the other. I know it doesn't matter in space but it still *feels* like it
neil armstrong I on the other hand had hoped that the E would have the Voyager's nacelles; at least the pylons.
I prefer the D tbh. This ship always looked smaller and inferior
Regarding "whale tanks", according to the books, USS Titan has quarters for a species that's adapted to microgravity and another for an aquatic crew member.
I love the Sovereign-class. I was disappointed in the deck plans, they only had 23 decks and way too few labs and holodecks. I run a LUG Star Trek RPG set in 2380 onboard the USS Endeavour NCC-79601 the first ship designed with the Quantum Slipstream Drive. USS Mercury was the first test bed but Endeavour (named for the former space shuttle) was the first purpose built and required the basic Sovereign design to be modified. I can just see a Sovereign doing 300-light-years per hour covering a sector (20-ly) in 4-minutes being sent out to trace out threats towards the delta quadrant. I even put a 72-man Starfleet Marine Company onboard commanded by a Major (O-4/Lt Cmdr) and even designed METCAR Mk.2 (Multi-Environment Tactical Combat ARmor) just for fun and one Vulcan Intelligence officer has a pet Sehlat onboard which the marines have adopted as a mascot much to the major's frustration.
I want a series with that ship!
Most things dwarf the Defiant, bang for the buck. this is 2 of the most loved (after 80's) Voyager and TNG combined
We lose Samuel at 11:41. By the time he speaks again, he's back.
Hahaha!........second.
My favorite second only to Enterprise-A.
Sorry man. I agree that it's a very nice design. I really like E but there was something about the D. She looked so... majestic.
It may sound strange but for me the list for best design using the name Enterprise would look like this:
1.Excelsior Refit (B)
2.Galaxy (D)
3.Ambassador (C)
4.Constitution Refit (A)
5.Sovereign (E)
6.NX
7.Constitution
And if I would like to add other designs to that list , six or seven of them would squeeze between numbers 4 and 5.
I *truly* wished that the Higher Ups had followed "Mr. Scott's Guide To The Enterprise" and named the Constitution Refit the "Enterprise Class". IMO the Refit was so very different from the Original Connie that reclassifying all Constitution Class-Refits (which I would imagine Starfleet would have done between ST:TMP & ST:TWOK to extend the lifespan of the entire class of the "Workhorses of the Federation" as "Enterprise Class" ships) would have been a wonderful gesture to both the show and the fans who kept Trek alive during the "Syndication 70's" as well as making all the potential confusion when talking about the Constitution Class - "Are you discussing the TOS Enterprise or the First 3 Films Enterprise?"
It's a nice model I bought the 7 ship models even Enterprise model it shows the size it's good !!!!
This used to be my third favorite ship until it and the two prime Connie designs were bumped sown a peg after I finally saw the Exeter-class in STO.
i totally agree with Foley about the deflector. blue would have been much better. it made the ship look old, like the original.
My favorite ship of all time. I only wish its hull color matched more along the lines of my 2nd favorite ship of all time, the Constitution Refit / Enterprise-A. The white color of the Constitution Refit seemed more "starfleet" to me, and harkened to more realistic NASA aesthetic.
8:46 So are you saying that it is on its way to evolve out of its secondary hull?
Something else, is there a definitive answer to the top speed of the Sovereign-class? I recall it going somewhere around warp 8 in “Star Trek: Nemesis”.
12:34 Now I know what that one person meant by the E looking like a Borgified ship to them.
16:12 The difference between the E and the F is comparable to the A and the B.
18:50 It looks like that area could lift off in a similar fashion to Andrew Probert’s Enterprise-C.
It travels at warp 8 in one of the movies, although this was not claimed to be the top speed for the Sovereign Class. The book Star Trek: Ships of the Line, gives the Sovereign class a top speed of Warp 9.995. I think this consistent for its size, power generation, and advanced warp nacelles.
I have done some research and considering how the USS Prometheus was the fastest ship in the fleet at stardate 51462 after the Sovereign-class was launched the three numbers I have seen for its top speed would make sense if the Enterprise-E in “First Contact” (stardate 50893.5) had a top speed of warp 9.7.
Then, incorporating lessons learned from the Prometheus-class and refining it have the Enterprise-E refit we see in “Star Trek: Nemesis” have a top speed of warp 9.985 and finally with technology incorporated from the Delta Quadrant in its final refit in the final moments of the movie give it a top speed of warp 9.995. (Sources in order: Starship Spotter, Star Trek: Evolutions, Ships of the Line.)
That progression sounds pretty good to me!
Lol, I knew they'd use the four lights reference then.
Dayum, I really love these high res renders. Are they original? Eitherway where can I get them, I use to refer to these kind of renders when I was drawing star trek ships be like blueprint style or massive battle in childhood!
You can transport the mobile outpost TYPHON it has Valkyries onbord! Vakriries are 1Person Hunters.
Why should it only have SHUTTLES?
Please answer off curese it s not perfekt
i'm waiting for a sovereign class re-fit
STO recently released a Tier 6 version of it.
Like Andrew Probert said, the deflector dish color depends on the power output. Perhaps the Enterprise-E deflector runs so efficiently that it requires less power? Therefore the copper colour, which fits into the low power mode deflector colour of the Enterprise Refit in TMP? Iunno, that's always been my reasoning/head canon.
I would get the next Enterprise models to show the size !!!
The E concept could be summed up as D after a diet that involved a martial arts based exercise program and chiropractic reconstruction. I wonder how visible the windows of any starship are unless they are backlit? If there was a way to camouflage them, I would be using it.
on first contact its clearly seen has a cooper finish deflector
Was just watching your old first contact review. You didnt seem so keen on the E back then.
It's personally my favorite federation ship. Just plain beautiful design.
Also the akira
Those dark grey blocks on the struts look like they may be ablative armour blocks (like Prometheus has).
Because there is such a large time gap between the C & The D it's a shame really that there isn't something else between the two - especially when the painting version with it's chins looks so right for a era just prior to the D - but I do like the regular C as a continuation of the Motion Picture era style very much too.
I still think it's a shame we didn't get to see the Ambassador Class barely at all in DS9 It is a ship i'd like to see more of - but then the same is true of both the Galaxy and the Sovereign too.
The sovereign class is something i'd like to see whizzing about with other ships of the post Voyager Era.
Maybe they can come up with some premise to use the 24/25th Century again on TV once Discover is done with.
My take on the Enterprise's evolution is very similar to how I look at the Doctor from 'Doctor Who.' The same way that Ten has the whimsy of Four and the intensity of Nine, the Enterprise-E takes its cues from the B, while the C goes back to the TOS and the A but morphs *just* slightly on its way to the D. They all carry something forward from their immediate predecessors to the point that nothing is ever truly *lost* from one generation to the next.
Sovereign was a step backwards. At best a lateral move in ship design. Especially in universe the other designs had 50 year reigns. In-universe it means the Galaxy was slated for replacement two years after it launched - assuming it was a reaction to Wolf 359 and not using JJ-style magic to design and build ships. The technical manual for the Galaxy class said it took like a decade from design to launch.
Excellent point when you mentioned that the C was leaning towards the Constitution-class design and the E towards the excelsior, always thought so too and I could never really like the D.. Too bulky, too "fat". The E is slim and durable, APPROVED!
Sovereign Seperation, is that a thing? It's not mentioned though there are images depicting this.
When I first saw this ship on First Contact, I was a little put off. I was a huge fan of the D and this was just so drastically different that I was immediately polarized. Over time, it has really grown on me, though. I still prefer circular saucers on my Star Trek ships, but I've grown much more fond of this design.
On the scaling. What you use is not a true reflection of the size of the ships. The Ent-D has useable Hull for 95%+ of the ship, the Ent-E length is nearly 1/3 nacelle or not useable space.
If you were to just use the hulls and not the overly aggressive swept back nacelles, the Ent-E is only ~2/3 the length of the D, which makes for a very short ship.
Going forward, you should cut out the extra length provided by long sweeping nacelles. In the 'every Enterprise Comparison' if you cut out the extra length added by the nacelles, the Ent-D is a massively large ship when compared to those that came before and after.
Have you ever considered showing your modelling process Commander? I for one would be very interested to see you put these renders together.
Correction needed: the Nemesis Enterprise-E was modeled by Jay Barton at Digital Domain, which did the effects for Nemesis.
yes sorry my bad!
I think this was designed to cut down on physical storage rather than people compliment. Physical goods can be stored in an Energy Buffer!
4:50 BIGATURES. :D
Dolphin lives matter... - "red matter"!... :)
Nice video.
So they took out the whale tanks, but please tell me they still have a brewery on board
Is there any other ship that uses a Manuel joystick?
It seems like the impulse engines would, by their design, direct a lot of their thrust upward...
impulse engines use thrust vectoring so while it might look like by the shape of the exhaust assembly that it would direct exhaust upward it doesn't really mean anything. yes it probably would make banking turns or pitching up easier but it really makes no difference.
"remember when we used to be explorers?" I think that line is important from picard. It betrays the role of the sovereign class. indeed thats probably why it was named "sovereign class". Just look at the size difference. The Galaxy is a bit larger, its built for exploration. Thats why Galaxy ships are made for comfort with room for individual quarters and families, it has the speed to run away and the weapons to defend itself when it cant. The Sovereign class ships wont leave the Sovereign territory of the Federation, it's designed for military missions and thats it. No families or extra places for comfort and moral. its made for combat, patrols, and "show the flag" missions, it has stores of armories and it seems maybe a barracks for ground combat and boarding or capturing ships (there was a lot of security teams in First Contact) its indeed a ship that reflects the federation policy from peaceful first contact to defending its territory from its powerful enemies they kept collecting.
To be fair..the Enterprise D is considerably larger, not just a bit...Atleast in regards of sheer volume
@@NashmanNash indeed, but like I said it's larger because each crewman has his/her own quarters and has facilities for families on board.
I like the enterprise of the future. In the final 2 part episode
The Sovereign Class; may she be spoken of with reverence for eons to come.
Interesting there's no mention of the connection between the Enterprise E and the Intrepid class Voyager designs. Other than the engine nacelles and the struts, they are very similar designs.
JarOfRats Because they're both designed AFTER Starfleet needed to find a method of warp thst didn't tear the fabric of space time. The genesis can be found in Next Gen. ALL Starfleet vehicles now have that look. So, you are right! and they are beautiful. And I just over trekked. Sorry.
Lol I hate the B/excelsior but the sovereign is my favourite. I love everything about the E (even the interior).
I absolutly love this ship, I wish I could find model of her to sit on my desk :(
It bugged me that in First Contact the saucer from some angles looked like a Sombrero
My top 3 ships
Enterprise e
Scimitar
Nx-01 enterprise
Have you looked at b and e if you look in dark facing you it looks the same just looking straight on battle look !!!
Targeting the bridge would be fairly difficult from the fore, side or aft, impossible from below. It's only a target from above. The entire ship is a bigger target from above. I don't think the bridge is a vulnerable spot.
even though im not a huge fan of the enterprise E.. i do have one for a fleet admiral character in star trek online
Turn the Enterprise D s saucer around it will be huge a. Longer an still be rhe largest federation ship , come on commander tou can render a pic , u can do it
the enterprise d is the favorite of most trek fans.. though the enterprise e is decent too
Maybe the darker colors of the Nemesis version reflect an addition of ablative armor during the Dominion War. Would make sense that she was up-armored and up-gunned for the war.
Right. But, they did need to drydock and get a new warp core after that battle, so maybe that refit added all the upgrades.
The Mito makes sense at least
I feel like I'm the only Trekkie who doesn't like this ship. The interior is lovely though.
Junkball media doesn't like it
I'm not the biggest fan of the soverign.
On the one hand I prefer the physical balance of the ship being more in line with the classic Trek ships like Excelsior and the refit. More of a long graceful looking ship.
Tonally, though, I prefer the Galaxy Class and what it represents in terms of Star Trek.
The Enterprise E was designed to fight. Good on her. Ultimately though, Star Trek is about solving problems with intelligence. Most of the best episodes of TNG, even if shooting is involved, are about solving a problem with intelligence in one form or another. RESOLVING a crisis, not DESTROYING things.
The Angel of Space
I wish I could go back and ask my 1996-self my opinion of this ship and compare notes with my low opinion today.
I like the idea of Trekyards WOW!. It would need an exclamation point. TY WOW! would be a hyped up infomercial for the show. It would demonstrate Star Trek technology in the same way cheesy products are sold on late night TV. The two of you would talk about the wonders of a bit of tech and the extremely low cost because the economics of the future are different.. After the two of you do the initial pitch you would bring on Doug Drexler as your special guest to seal the deal.
Doug would introduce a bit of film where the Enterprise with a single torpedo would destroy the Death Star. Or perhaps an Enterprise crew member getting food out of the replicator. This would be contrasted by a storm trooper eating a crummy field ration. Thus proving Star Trek tech superior to that of inferior brands of science fiction.
I know this is a silly idea. Even so, a couple of episodes about a couple pieces of tech would be fun. And I think Mr. Drexler would be great at it and think it was a hoot.
Also the one area Trek appears to be lacking is a Circus Ship. They have a troupe of actors who murder people roaming the universe why not clowns? We have never been connected to a planetary genocide.
Some where there should be a circus entertaining amoung the stars. Every other conceivable type of person has been represented in Star Trek except for my people.
I hope this this finds you well. And gives you ideas.
Zeeppo
I have two problems. First of all if it’s a warship why does it have so many windows? Those are a ton of weak points. You’d think they would purposely have some heavy bulkheads that would slam down over every window when the ship goes to red alert? When your shields go a phaser can go right through my bedroom lol. The other issue is they never physically protect the warp core. You would think they would have some sort of plating that would engage over the entire core that could take shocks. For a New warship the sovereign had its warp core damaged in the first blow. The D’s warp core was breached by a 20 year old tiny bird of prey.
In my opinion they should have NOT destroyed the Enterprise D, Should have it a overhaul with more torps and reconfigured phasers, I would have like to have seen a NEW saucer where its rotated 90 Deg or so , so that the saucer is elipitical lengthwise. they would need to modify the nacelles slightly to be in line with saucer and modify the connecting dorsal by enlongating the battle bridge section slighty, more like a bird.
I kind of understand why they did though. They wanted a new ship for the movies.
I agree. Wish they would of kept it around. Such a great looking ship (Galaxy in general). Still love the shots of the Odyssy in DS9 (before it went poof of course), made it look like such a large imposing ship and they pumped up the colors of the nacelles and such too.
Mark Plott it was to represent change. the sovvys job wasn't the same as the big d
***** and they Launched a basic unfinished mainline Flagship, without adequate weapons, the borg were able to beam aboard undetected, is a secure facility , like engineering, messing with the environmental controls.
The Ent-D was too expensive to use. The shape of it caused it to be extremely front heavy and made it incredibly hard to mount, and just the overall shape wasn't ideal because it doesn't have many great-looking angles.
It was built during the Dominion War, it's demise is always suspect.
Point-for-point @ 15.38.. NX-01 has Too Large of a Saucer. TOS 1701's Saucer is too small. 1701-A has a ring-outer too much on the saucer.. 1701-B is too Small by at least two outer rings, and 1701-C is too large by, at least, an outer ring. One 'Odd' thing, you guys never note "why' the Disk fore-structure, as if you never got the 'design ideal' of F.J.'s ships. The Idea was to allow Crew to 'cross to an area' in minimal-time from any-other station, and to let the ship (if hull was intact) to 'fly' into an atmosphere as a 'safe landing' device/lifeboat. The 'Connies' and 'DN-Federations' were two 'life boats' in one hull. Oh, and, btw, a DN's saucer is a bit smaller, than the 1701-B, so, SOME ONE has 'Scale' Issues (um, Feet, and CM are, a tad different) {don't be lke Nasa/ESA going to Mars)...
I am an SFB player since '80, and have the Meanest Orion ever, the OCS 'Injustice'...
TOS Enterprise # 1
Enterprise E # 2
I hate to burst your trekkie nerd out bubble, but the reason the Enterprise E looks the way it does is because Paramount pictures executives demanded the ship look more like the original Constitution class. The executives said the classic TOS design would be far more marketable. That meant the filmmakers in ST: Generations had to destroy the Enterprise D and then design a new ship for the subsequent TNG movies.
It doesn't really look much like the Constitution to me though.
Valerie DeMarco while you have a good idea, it's been explained in the past why the D was destroyed.
1st: In general, they just wanted to do the TNG movies with a new enterprise.
2nd: The look was also a major factor. The Ent-D had very few angles at which it would look decent enough to show on screen, mostly due to the shape of the ship.
3rd: Due it's weird shape. Before they switched to CGI, they used the big production model of the enterprise, the issue with this was that due to the weird shape of the ship, and the ability for the model to be able to saucer separate (which meant entirely separate lighting system for the saucer), a lot of weight would be put on the saucer, making it extremely front heavy which caused a major off-balance in weight, which is why it was very hard to mount, and very expensive.
4th: The destruction of the saucer was originally planned to be as the sixth season finale, but due to limitations in budgets, it wasn't possible. The concept of the saucer destruction was brought up in planning generations and they decided to go with it.
Minutarizaion in technology they could have made an bigger ship and more weapons on it
I'm surprised at how lorez the 3D model is. It falls apart in these close stills.
it was never meant to be seen that up close...and if it was they build dedicated close up models for those shots!
The Sovereign is a nice ship however, when it came up against the Romanian warship scimitar it depleted its weapons. The ship needs to have twice the amount of firepower that it had to be a Warship and its Shields need to be improved.
It would have been cool if they had taken notice of the Armada games and had given it a Corbomite Reflector.
It fired alot more weapons that it was shown in the scenes. Also the amount of launchers it had depleted it's torpedoes rather fast. Also it's warp core was disabled so the power generation was down by alot. It was unable to regen it's weapons and shields as fast as possible. Also the scimitar had alot of shielding, it was easily twice or maybe 3 times the size of the Enterprise.
I think the Sovereign fills the role of an advanced tactical heavy cruiser just fine, but the fact is that the Scimitar is one of the most overpowered vessels we've ever seen in Trek. Recall: it had a perfect cloak and it could fire its 52 disruptors and 27 torpedo launchers *and* have a double set of shields raised while cloaked, even at warp!
Also recall, the Enterprise did get the better of the Scimitar when she rammed it. This suggests that the Sovereign class, in fact, has superior armor and structural integrity compared with the Scimitar.
its an awesome design but they put themselves a bit in a corner because its almost impossible to design a new enterprise now thats even more slick
