I've been involved with buying/cutting walnut in Michigan, and I've seen them cut. You are the first instructional video, that actually looks like the person instructing is a pro. You impressed me with your precise calculation and tree control. Nice work.
Nice bore cut !! I do mine like that too !! Cut one several yrs ago almost 4 ft on the stump and first log was 20 ft and something we got 8 logs total out of it we sold that 🌲 for almost $4000.00 !!😍😍
Yes, cutting black walnuts can be tricky. It barber chairs and/or splits easily. few days ago I bore cut a nice stem but disaster struck as I attempted to buck out saw logs. I measured out a 26 footer but the log was suspended at both ends. The tree was probably 80' plus and I work in mountainous terrain. Well, I'm no stranger to the principal of tension and compression in a log but in this particular case the downed log split horizontally ruining a nice ten foot section and it happened fast! This would never happen with poplar or pine, but walnut is prone to split. Not really sure how I can avoid this other than to make sure the log is on the ground and not in horizontal suspension. If any of you guys have experience with black walnuts and can school me I would appreciate that!
We are cutting on a walnut job right now, I have cut all the trees this way. On some real nice ones I sometimes cut the hidge out before I release the tree.
At first I tought, what the h--- is he doing? Ah ha, but after I seen your 2 , 2x4 hinges it made more sence. Nice job and I think your placement of wedges and wedge timing was critical and optimal. Good job, I would not cut the hinge out as one comment suggested, I thought your way was good and shows your experience, not your 1st rodeo, stay humble and keep those black walnuts coming, I have another table to build. Nice work, nice equipment, nice tree, so pretty, and yes, the branch wood is the prettiest, like swirled caramel. Heavenly. .
Hi how long can a walnut tree log sit out while trying to sell it? Like you just cut it down and bucked it up and let it lay on a coupke of 4x4s or something
Like how each guy has a different way of cutting Walnut for veneer, I've watched Turner Logging and many others and all different what ever works for you I suppose.
Yep, Turner doesn’t even do directional felling. They cut and fall the tree into its natural lean. They leave a spur on the backside as a trigger but there’s no hinge wood, just bore the guts out of it and snip the spurs. Seems pretty sketchy to me and like it damages all the trees around the Walnut but their market only seems to care about walnut and some occasional oak so it makes sense there where they cut.
Cool video but I have a question. What is the purpose for boring out the heart wood? I think I understand why you did it on this tree but you do it a lot and you have never explained why.
Sure glad I didnt stand to the right of the target stump!😮 I thought all tree felling started with a decent breakfast? I dont even see any snacks in the belt!😕
Kind of lost a bunch of wood putting that face cut in it. You don't need a face cut at all. Spur cut them and dig around the base some 2 or 3in is a lot of money with walnut
@@nuts319 well u push cut and on the back side of tree where u would normally start back cut you leave a couple of ears uncut u know part of the root. Flair. But I its kind of hard to explain but if you push cut u fill in your curf with sawdust and there for you wont pinch ypur bar.and when u feel it set back on stump u cut the ears and thwre she will go
Knew an old walnutter here in Southern MO, when i was a kid. He carried a shovel and an axe in one hand, and a Stihl in the other. He stood 6' 5" and didn't mind a kid asking a bunch of questions. He said, "It takes a hundred years to make one of these, and i ain't gonna waste one inch of it." Words to live by for me.
Good lookin stick and perfect cut....these non hingin fools are lackin a little in the fiber break/pull department...seen some dandy bucks last few weeks down here in eastern ky

Can you recommend a good small tract timber buyer/cutter in west Michigan?
Straight and beautiful Walnut!!!
That’s beautiful. My new sawmill is going to be here in about a month and I am looking forward to cutting up some of my black walnut.
You really do some great cutting on those trees👍
Thank you

Nice cut Pete, walnut is expensive and love the branches for the grains
Good job Pete!!

Very good explanation and video!
Thank you!
Very close to how I would cut that tree.
In New Hampshire we didn't have Walnut. I did cut plenty of veneer.
Great vid bud. Dont cut timber for a living but cut an ass load of firewood for 3 outdoor stoves. Running the same setup . That was a nice tree $

If you cut the hinges wouldn't it pinch the saw ?
Ever do slick stump? See people talk about it but never seen it.
Nah not my bag
@@nuts319 I’m out in SoCal. Get all kinds of crazy stuff. Coolest is big eucalyptus

Tired Iron - I agree Nuts319 method seems better for avoiding injury to the tree, the feller, and the residual stand.
Nice work nutsy!
I'd like to see more about your saw and the chains you use.
Husqvarna 372xp and Oregon 72LGX
