    The amazing part of the 1960-2000 era was how dynamic it was.
    Origin, high school, college, adult, marriage, child...all surrounded by an amazing supporting cast that felt natural as he matured.
    This was my Spider-Man seeing him grow from the perpetual underdog to becoming among the best of all Marvel's pantheon.

      To be fair, while 26 issues might seem short for us readers today who can binge-read the issues, you have to understand that each of these were only published monthly. For readers of the time, Peter was in high school for a few years. Even in continuity, he got his powers during his sophomore year of high school, rather than in his senior year like the Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield movies would have you think. So much of Peter's early character development took place during his high school years, and even the iconic moment when he lifted the machinery only happened when he'd probably only been in college for a week or two.

    • @crimsonking440

      Ultimate spiderman taking place entirely before he graduated has a lot to do with it i think. Raimis movie came out before that series really got popular and he graduates before he really even became spiderman.

    What I love about the original comic issues of Spider-man is how Flash Thompson is portrayed not as a stereotypical bully or jock-like character that Hollywood likes to joke about, but more realistic and grounded as being flawed as much as Peter was early in his high school life. Flash even tried reaching out to Peter to be friends but Peter was so used too being an anti-social jerk, that he rejected him and had a bit of an ego about himself.

      So Stan had a lot to do with Spider-Man.

    Despite being comics from the 60's these still some of the best well written Spider Man stories to this day, perfectly mixing fun super hero concepts with very relatable teenager drama.
    I specially like how the comics shows Peter growth from high school to colleage, with many of his supporting characters like Betty Brant and Liz Allan being replace by characters like Harry Osborn, Mary Jane and Gwen Stacy, and the stories became less comedic sitcoms and more dramatic. It really helps the stories to sell the idea that Peter is truly growing and dealing with changes in his life, something very unique for comic books at the time, in which the main character life didn't change that much nor his supporting cast (ex: Superman was still a reporter and his suporting cast was Lois and Jimmy; Batman still lived in his mansion with Dick Grayson as his sidekick).

    • @alexandrefrauches132
      @alexandrefrauches132 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Clowningaround326 Because in the late 50's/early 60's comic book stories were very simple typical super hero stuff (a villain shows up, the hero saves the day, the end). When Marvel begin their stories, the focus change and the writers like Stan Lee gave the characters more personality and relatable problems that made them so unique compare to the stories that came before.

    Romita was probably THE best Spider-Man artist. Of course modern comics are ridiculously detailed and digitally modified into absurdity, but his style is so clean man.

    • @johnrigs6540
      @johnrigs6540 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      Yup.
      Todays comics are just too overwritten and the art too complicated and all over the place.
      And outside of a few ( like John Jr!) most of the artists don’t seem to know how to tell stories.
      I mostly blame the writers though.
      Because they use full script and tell the artist exactly and precisely what to do in every panel and most of the time it visually does not work.
      Just try to read todays books just by looking at the art!
      Impossible!
      But years ago EVERY comic could be read that way.
      They should go back to the marvel method - it was cleaner and simpler and easier to follow.
      As you said -
      John Romita showed them all exactly how it should be done many years ago!

      @@Celtic1020 Both versions took liberties. I'm more partial to the way TSSM took it's liberties it just sucks that it was cut short cause it ended off with so much left unexplored. A lot of TSSM was almost a straight adaptation of storylines but having the core group of characters there right out of the gate. I do like some changes that the 90s show did and thought that the Green Goblin plot was maybe even better than TSSM (Norman and Harry felt less flat than TSSM and the 90s show actually adapting that Bridge Death then the Clone Saga was ballsy).

    • @Rodanguirus
      @Rodanguirus ปีที่แล้ว +2

      TSSM is generally very intelligent with its liberties. Oftentimes, the "liberties" are "choosing to draw from the Ultimate comics/'90s animated series/Raimi films" instead of the 616 comics for a particular concept or story beat. And I think it generally picks and chooses where to draw inspiration very effectively (it does introduce entirely new, good ideas as well).
      I have no problem calling it the stronger show than the '90s animated series, and is in the running to be the "definitive" Spidey adaptation. I do feel like people approach the '90s series with a bit too broad of a brush, ripping into it for some of its obvious, low-hanging fruit flaws, and not giving credit where it's due (it balances season-long, ongoing plots with episodic conflicts very well, it captures a college-age Peter perfectly, and his inner monologue and dry sarcasm just suits the character so well, it pretty much eclipsed the comics as the blueprint for the symbiote/Venom storyline...).

    I really enjoyed your retrospective. I'm subscribing to check the next ones too! Your thoughts were really similar to my own reading the early years. Those years were something special cause the friend group dynamic was endearing and I got invested in Peter's life. It was unfortunately brief, cause I genuinely wanted it to stay the adventurous, fun years more before the angst dampered it.
    I really grew to like Gwen as well and enjoyed the Gwen/Peter dynamic. She loved Peter for aspects of himself that existed outside of his superpowers (neither MJ or Black Cat fell for Peter since Spider-man was always a factor, but with Gwen I could buy that they'd have liked each other even if he never had powers). I'm also grateful that you mentioned how people neglect to mention Mary Jane's behavior in the early years cause she was not the least bit sympathetic back then. When people act like she was more interesting/a better choice for Pete pre-issue 121... I honestly can't for the life of me see it! I just think about how cruel she was to Harry (spurring his addiction and inadequacy for no reason other than getting a kick out of hurting someone else) and how she mocked Gwen when Peter showed up looking mentally-ill at Gwen's birthday party (when they retcon MJ to having known Peter's secret all along it looks more bitchy of her to do that). I still can't see 616!MJ as being the ideal girl I'd want to see Peter with after that behavior. Making her have a Freudian excuse for it just feels like 180 for her. I very much love her in the Raimi movies (where she's got flaws but she's not intentionally belittling people) and cartoons and so on... the comics not so much.
    And speaking of unlikable, YES, Aunt May in the early comics is too dumb to live. I swear, I could not even with her bizarre reasoning for hating Spider-man and adoring Doc Ock. What a nutty woman. It's amazing that she managed to not go down in history as the stupidest comics character of all time.

    I loved Sandman in the original, he was just a goofball. In his first issue he broke into a school whilst fighting Spider-Man and went “now that I’m here I might as well get a diploma” and then he tried to force a teacher or school administrator to give him one and they refused because they needed to be earned.

    Great vid! The first 300 issues of amazing spiderman are probably one of the most consistent runs in comic book history. In particular the first 100 issues are really top notch, despite potentially being tempted to think otherwise with how old they are. And you're completely right, the writers really make you care about Peter's personal life almost more than the spiderman parts of his comic. The cast on the whole was really well done, I'm glad to see someone else appreciate this series! If you continue to do videos on amazing spiderman I'd like if you make each video cover roughly 100 issues of the series because the series really does kind of divide itself up by the hundreds in terms of story.

    Aunt May saying hep instead of hip is not joke but an indication she from the pre world war 2 generation as hep from hepcat was the term until the late 50 when teenagers changed it to hip to show they were young.

    You should check out Spiderman Blue its a retelling of how Peter and Gwen fell in love. It's written by Jeph Loeb and illustrated by Tim Sale. Also if you're getting into comics I'd suggest Daredevil. He has ,in my opinion, some of the best comics of all time as well as an absolutely awesome TV series

    The storylines where Green Goblin found out about Peter's identity and Norman Osborn throws a dinner party was used in the 90's Spider-Man cartoon and they combined them with the Death Of Gwen Stacy storyline but with MJ instead of Gwen

      Yea which makes it kind of odd, since the whole reason they didn’t use Gwen in that cartoon was cus they didn’t want to do that story, yet they did it anyways. Obviously there’s some differences like how mj doesn’t actually die, but as far as the characters are aware, she does, so same difference

    Good job! This was where to begin, for sure, but also, a much-simpler decade, as Spider-Man had maybe a dozen guest shots, but just one title. Marvel Team-Up begins in the last year of your video. I think you made the right choices for dramatic impact- that's more important than trying to reach out for every Kangaroo hop or Kang robot.
