    I have done this for several years works great. But, I don't just cut them in half. Try cutting on a ridge (through the poles, not the along the equator) just going through the skin all the way around--then put it in water and work the halves to separate (not that difficult, just cut a little deeper if you need to). I now buy and eat lots of pomegranates in the fall. This method came to me via a Turkish restaurant in the DC area.

    How interesting! I was in the store yesterday and they had an employee with a basin of water and a bunch of pomegranates, doing just what you demonstrated. I'm one of those people who enjoys pomegranates in a restaurant meal, but never buy them because I didn't know how to get at the seeds the right way, but now I do!

    Personally, I am the pomegranate peeling master at home (every time I'm given that part of the job :D) , and I do it another way, I cut the top and the bottom of the pomegranate, I cut it into half but horizontally and without slicing, just get my knife into the outer skin, then I separate the two halves (like if I am opening a Dungeness Crab's head), I flip the halves so that the seeds face down into the container and I start whacking it with a wooden spoon, and then all of the seeds come down easily. Well that was a tip that I think works fast, but your method is good too, the aim is to make no mess :)

    illl tell u the best way, i learnt this when i was doing my kitchen apprenticeship, cut in half place cut side in ur hand to catch seeds get butter knife, grab the spreading edge, use the handle and keep hitting the top of the pomegranate, and the seeds will come out, start of light then starting hitting it harder takes about 1 minute u may lose SOME juice but nothing is washed away and u ready to eat. Thumbs up for the good of humanity and those who want to follow our path.

    I leared a better way some days before. You just cut or cut/break it in half. Then you hold one half in your hand, so that you can hit the back with a spoon or the back of your knife. If you do that long enough, all seeds will fall into your hand and through your fingers onto a plate or a bowl.
    This method is faster and there is even less mess.

    We usually cut in half and then into a bowl hold around the rim of the pomegranate and then hit the top with a wooden spoon and the seeds come popping out no fuss and it helps release some tensions from the day. But it was good to see another technique

    "most of the membrane...that stuff makes me insane" HAHAHAHAHA xD

  • @TheTantanski
    @TheTantanski 11 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Step 1: Cut the little neck off just at the base.
    Step 2: The ridges along the pomegranate must be cut slightly (without reaching the seeds) from the neck all the way down to the base.
    Step 3: slowly break apart the six parts (there are usually 6 ridges on the pomegranate)
    Step 4: use water like in the video (I never thought about using water before, thanks Chef John)

    Here is another method for you - please try it and let me know what you think. cut the pomegranate in 2 or 4, then simply hit the external pill continuously with the back of a spoon.
    The seeds will fall right into the bawl without loosing any juice in the process. First time I witnessed it - I was amazed how simple and easy it is to solve this riddle...
    Please try it?
    Cheers

    • @fooficst
      @fooficst 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Ajar Ajar Agreed, tapping the back of a halved pomegranate with the back of the spoon is the best method. I do it, and it works. Use discretion; increase/decrease intensity of tapping to extract the seeds.

    If you like your pomegranate seeds to be watery than this IS the right method for you! No question about it. However, this fruit is originally from Persia (has been around for 5000 years) and frankly, no self-respecting Persian/Middle Easterner would de-seed a pomegranate in water and wash away half of the juices. (Notice how pink the water is...?) Just saying!

    • @TachOnRed
      @TachOnRed 7 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Actually, they don't get "watered down" unless you cut the seeds open/ damage their membranes. If you open them the correct way by scoring them along their ribs instead of just slicing it in half like they do in this video, you won't lose any juice.

    • @shotjohnny
      @shotjohnny 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes, but then you have wet (and "watery") pomegranate seeds - and who wants to eat that?? Unless you go through the tedious step of patting them dry afterward... Anyway, if the "water method" works for some people, then by all means!

    • @TachOnRed
      @TachOnRed 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      They're not wet or soggy actually. If anything the membranes soak up some water and they get firmer (just like green vegetables do). So they end up a little crunchier. You just have to drain the water out with a colander before serving. Yes, it's an additional step. But at least for me, the final result of having firm, crunchy, full flavoured (not watered down), and skin (white part) free pomegranate seeds is totally worth the trouble.
      If you haven't yet, give it a try! =) You might change your mind. And if you don't , then hey at least you tried! =D after all, different strokes for different folks. =D

    Thank you for this helpful hint!
    Someone else may benefit from my tips, too. First, wash the pomegranate because it will be comingling with the fruit in the bowl. Next, to stop the inevitable splatter, place it in a paper or plastic bag that leaves enough room to cut the fruit with a heavy-duty knife inside the bag.
    Finally, you may be able to capture some "loose" juice before adding the halves to the water by turning the halves upside down over wide-mouth glasses for a few minutes.

    The best way is to beat the back of it with a wooden spoon or heavy plastic cooking spoon. No water required. Also, don't cut it all the way in half, just cut an "equator" around the pomegranate. Pull the pomegranate apart, beat the the back of each half and watch the seeds tumble out. Much easier and you don't have to worry about bacteria from underneath your fingernails getting into it.

    well, every pomegranate is different, but most of the ones I've seeded drop a lot of juice just by cutting the fruit. I make cuts on the ridges and it drops a lot. The juice is delicious and I love to eat the kernels along with some juicy at the sides. I guess your technique must be very practical for restaurants since they had to prepare dishes on a hurry. I personally like this one I saw and combine it with hitting the granate in the outside with a big spoon.link goes in other post

      Cool. Seeing your post is 10 years old, how big are those plants now?

    what a nice way to wash the flavor out! Try just cutting it in half and wack the back, it's faster and better.

    Omg that my favorite fruit can't wait till they start saleing them. And I fell like a pro bc I have no problem. I can do exactly what u did with out water. But I been eating them since I was little.

    I avoided the pomegranate for the mess too, but now I think I'll try it....but I must say, it's easier to just buy the juice.
