I said "Free 99" (I think I heard that on Matt's channel) and she said "I've only got a ten. Will that be okay?" Had to explain it to her. Felt bad too! As if I'd bill my parents!

    Paul, being an old time AC guy. You should have angled the air flow up or just straight out.
    Cool air drops since it is heavier than warm air, you would get better mixing of the air across the shop.

    Hey Paul, when you fix the fan bearing, can you show us how your swamp box works. Many people who don't live in dry, not climates haven't heard of them. I was fascinated to learn about them as a kid when I moved to Texas. I think your explanation style would be perfect for the easy to understand essentials. Maybe ask Michelle for her description first?

    • @mattmanyam
      @mattmanyam ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Evaporative cooling.
      The phase-change that occurs when water evaporates requires heat... It takes the heat from the air, leaving cooler air to come through to the shop.
      Only worth the effort in low humidity.

    • @ronwilken5219
      @ronwilken5219 ปีที่แล้ว

      Don't confuse us even more by asking Michelle for her description which'll probably be along the line of "air cooler thingamebob." But I'm with you. What's a swamp cooler??. I have visions of a cool, mosquito laden breeze that chills you enough that you don't realise that the mosquitoes are puncturing your skin with sufficient frequency to guarantee, malaria, ebola, swamp fever, berrie berrie or some other vial disease man has yet to invent or discover.
      Put us out of our inquisitive state.
      Regards from Canada's banana belt. Also a malarial area.

    • @jesseleesamples
      @jesseleesamples ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I was about to ask how this thing works, I wish he would’ve explained it but it’s probably a common thing there and doesn’t seem worth explanation. I’ve never seen anybody put such a thing in their shop but I live in the northeast so maybe it doesn’t work good here in. I assume since he said it needed a water line that it evaporates water to cool somehow but idk if that would work in areas with more humidity

    • @ronwilken5219
      @ronwilken5219 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@jesseleesamples I'm assuming it works by evaporating the water and extracting heat that way. In Africa we used to have canvas water bags that you hung anywhere convenient on you vehicle. The water seeped through the canvas very slowly and the evaporation would cool it dramatically and vehicular motion would add the breeze. Only thing was that you had to soak them for a week before to make them waterproof. Otherwise they worked very well. Here in SW Ontario it would be useless. We're surrounded by open water and the humidity can be horrendous. Only place I know if that adds the "humidex" to the actual temperature in the summer so 30°C feels like 40°C if you get my drift.
      We'll see if Paul explains .

    Shoebox story. My dad had an auto repair shop in N. Miami during the 1960’s and ‘70s and most of his work was GM primarily Cadillacs. Sometime in the early 70’s he got hold of a mid 60’s Nova and surprise, surprise he happens to have a 500ci engine in his shop. Well he wedged that engine into the Nova with some metalwork and battery relocation, kept it sleeper looking. I’ll always remember that car, black with red vinyl seats and dog dish hubcaps.

    okay just a random idea to turn your swamp cooler into an Aircon. find two radiators sitting around your not using, fit one either side of the enclosure over the fan intakes. and seal up the rest of the box, connect the two radiators up to each other and than run two ends into your shop, fab up a steel or ally box you can create a large opening in the top off to fill with ice. hook up a water pump to circulate the ice water through the radiators and you have cheap AC

    My Dad passed away almost a year ago but this segment reminds of the day when he had built an air conditioner before they were available commercially. Made from iron bed frames and whatever could be sourced from his stash, it was heavy as a barra full of cement. We got it up into the closest window of the house, somehow. When Hunter was holding the swamp cooler in, flash back when I was doing just that, but my Dad said just hang on to that and I'll be back, I should have gotten a signed written agreement about WHEN he'd be back. It felt like a ' Few hours later ' I was alot younger than Hunter at the time. The air con worked on its bed frame platform but Mum said it looked ugly and ordered it out of the window. My suggestion to watch it fall out the window but nope Dad Suggested we man handle it out like we did when it went in. I managed to live through that exercise. I had one more suggestion that day and it was why dont we put in the shop! Dad said no it looks too ugly! 😵‍💫

    There are newer two stage swamp coolers that work much better. They use a paper honeycomb evaporator that is over a foot thick and works much better than the old excelsior that the old type uses. I put one in when I lived in Palm Springs and it worked very well.

      I think using what he did was a function of not spending money on instal and using what he has not getting the most efficient cooler

    I used to sing at work all of the time. One day a co-worker stopped by my office and heard me singing. I'll never forget his comment to me, "I used to wish that I could sing, now I wish that you could sing". It made me laugh out loud.

    If you put some metal in and have them angled up slightly, it might cool more of the shop further away from the opening. I plan on installing a home security system on my truck with a monitor and video cameras with infrared LEDs.

    When I was a Specialist in the USAR, we did "midnight drive" in hummers and deuce and halfs. My job was to drive the 5-to wrecker.... The First Sargent hit a tree... had to fix that hummer before we made it back to post. The early NVGs had no depth perception. Made it interesting for driving and even walking through the woods.

    Used swamp coolers in NM for decades. Great for dry climates. Before you set it up for next summer though, get some sealer and apply it to the pan. Run it up the supports about a foot, too. Cheap, easy, and it makes it last years longer. Happy cooling!
