You think for a service where the people have to pay their bills as required by law, the BBC could afford to have SD channels just in case anything goes wrong with the hd ones. If they can't, where the heck is the money going?
If something went wrong with HD ones what makes you think SD ones would work? SD channels on satellite are redundant as 90% of equipment has been able to receive HD feeds for years

This is why we have in the U.S. a requirement for local channels the ability to receive signal from an antenna. That way local news and weather alerts are available at all times.

The colours used in this SD closure screen reminds me of that 'generic' BBC downtime filler (used after CBBC closedown before 7pm, leading up to the return of BBC Three back in 2022).

Times moving on. Standard Definition is now obsolete, with 4K being the new/future standard and 1080p (High Definition) being the standard for the past decade.
And SKY Still have SDTV and they changed the SD Channels to DVB-S2 just to make some more Cash with HDTV... But Otherwise, i would not longer have any or less SKY Channels. My card is Paired with an not existing SKY Receiver, beause i never had one! I have just 1 SKY HD Channel Nick Jr. HD and two FreeView HD Channels, Channel 4 HD and STV HD. And The BBC, ITV, Channel 5 HD 4 HD as FTA Versions.

Freeview remains unaffected. However, freeview does not hold the capacity for a full HD switch over. Freely is on its way, which could be the service that replaces freeview or could someway be implemented with the service. If you have freeview HD, which could most likely already have, BBC HD channels are available to which they could in future close their SD service here too.

also, there were no digital standard definition signals in 1936, if any at all. The BBC started airing in digital in 1998 I believe.

@kreuner11 SD requires less compared to HD meaning its a good backup. It's similar with Radio having FM and AM.

Antennas are still used in the uk under the service "Freeview", The bbc shutting down sd channels dosent affect Freeview at all.
This was only the satellite service, Freeview SD is still operational.
