Note: Im not quite as dumb as I look (sometimes). I can spot posts from anonymous You Tube accounts touting other brands. When that happens its counterproductive for "said" attempts...
Having worked in the leather trade for 30 years this is basic ... Leather grease and tar remover would do the same thing and Fiebing's Leather Dye to bring the colour back but be spairing as its a liquid and will go into the sponge below.... this stuff is a fraction of the cost of that stuff. but good explanation but it pays to be gentle with the sanding.
I wish I'd known about this on my last car, the bolsters were poor but the car past paying a pro to fix. I have bookmarked their page for future. Thanks for having him on.
I rate the "Furniture Clinic " products 100%. I recoloured my motorcycle leathers 6 years ago with a kit for £50 and it still looks factory fresh. I cannot recommend them highly enough.
Jason Phillips I just posted about them too, yes I echo your thoughts, very good stuff from them, I’ve done quite a few cars with them now - their matches for Audi Bmw and range rover are amazing and their sealants are really hard wearing.
Thank you for showing a proper DIY product that is fairly priced for the results. As a semi-pro or wannabe, we want to do it right and not use TH-cam hacks to save money and end up with a hack job lol.
Did my 4 year old jag with a clean and protect they came out great, I was concerned about the grey inset leather but no probs, it’s a thumbs up for me..... ps take it you are staying with the project.
@ColdPetRat2.99 My 01 jag has leather seats and every inch of the seats is leather. Door panels, seat backs the pockets on the seats are leather, everything
Nicely done. I think with anything car related thst is being restored it is important to be realistic on your expectation, unless you are getting a total retrim or repaint completely. That was a great point as you can take anything, even paint for a polish and detail, and the person may not be able to get it perfect. These look great compared to before.
Is there no top coat or sealant that goes on top of the paint to protect it or Stop color transfer to your clothes? What is the after car for this newly painted leather
I remember getting banned out of my girlfriends fathers car with blue jeans. He had a cream leather interior, and the colour transfer came from the jeans to the leather🙄
with the colorlock fresh paint (diy) solution there is no seperate top coat... With the pro solution there is primer, color coat, and top coat that you spray out in layers.
Does the paint offer the same coating protection that the seats had from the factory and can you do finish to use leather protectants like you did before?
hey steve no mate. The colorlock fresh is a mix of paint and binders. But its a single system product. Its a DIY fix, done to be user friendly, cheap and less processes. Colorlock also sell pro method which is spraying primer, base color, and clearcoat products in 3 layers just like car paint (with compressor and spray gun). When you use the pro method you will get closer to OEM standards. Or I would imagine you could impart "beyond" OEM durability if you put more top coat down for example. but thats beyond my knowledge. So the colorlock fresh kit we used in this video wont be as good as the full pro method. at least in my head. I think we talked about this in the previous video we did a few years ago when RAm sprayed it using the pro methodd.
@@ForensicDetailing Gotcha! So, you need to be a bit more careful, to some extent to avoid causing damage that would otherwise be protected against via the mfr coating. I like how rich the color appears to be. Very deep and full. Thanks, Jon
I recently bought a 6 year old car from AC and after just 2k miles I’ve noticed a rub mark appear on my drivers leather seat. I’m presuming they just filled with a leather filler and I’ve worn it off. Wondering what I would have to do to repair it so it doesn’t re-appear. Any help would be massively helpful @ForensicDetailing
very good point you should mask up. We did an alcantara video cleaning. so the middle section was wet and we could not tape it. but we were just carefull not to dab paint onto the alcantara.. but the paint can be wiped up before it dries.. worth saying this paint wont bleech anything as well.
Yes. I have used the complete colourfresh set. After cleaning and coloring the leather, you protect it with colourlock leather protect. After drying 48hrs, my leather became OEM matte finish.
It has been a while when ever I order a new vehicle I never get it with the leather seats anymore I just get normal one which is in my opinion better and cleaner and they will never crack just buy seat covers and cover them up and save over 1k extra option for the leather seats
I use their COLOURLOCK new car Leather Cleaning 1 x COLOURLOCK Mild Leather Cleaner, 125 ml 1 x COLOURLOCK Leather Shield, 150 ml 1 x Cleaning Sponge1 x Cleaning Cloth on the X6 and it seems to work great. The kit I got was recommended for newer cars at under 3 years old. Works great so far and reminds me, I need to do another aplication
I scanned through the comments but couldn't see anything about lighter coloured thread or stitching? Does this need to be avoided when colouring black seats for example? Great content as usual Forensic Detail Channel!
yer there are lots of intricate details with recolor leather. all sorts of seats with multi colored things.. so yer this was a pretty simple job some jobs might be very tricky..
Has this been talked about yet > using a resolene or some acrylic water based finish/sealant so you don't get bleeding? I would think that just applying dye may not be 100% stable and would rub off yes? Thoughts on that one Jon?
the pro solution is primer, base and then top coat sprayed out in layers. closer to how the leather will be painted at OEM... colorlock sell all this as well but you need compressor and spray gun.
My wife sat on our old cream sofa with wet blue jeans on and it stained onto the sofa. Leather is porous so I'd say theres a chance it could go the other way too. Might test it on the wifes car first 😂
Sanding and degreasing the leather must dry the leather out completely then its painted so there's a barrier stopping the leather being fed with product which surely can only decrease and encourage the leather to wear and crack even quicker like dry skin. Question - If you go out and can caught in the rain the sit in the car in damp jeans do you get a black ass?
not with the DIY leather fresh product. but their professional line contains primer, paint, and gloss and matt laquer that you mix to achieve different levels of shine.
Another really good product review, I'll be honest, and it's not a criticism, for complete idiots like me I would have liked to have seen a close up of the colour repair (penultimate step) Just to see his technique for application. Great review, I'm a complete novice at this and your videos are a great reference and source of information.
I will need to get my Volvo interior done, good to know they ask for ur Vin Number because mines is that weird 2 tone Grey and Creamy colour on the inserts, looks rotten now but when they're clean they're nice, would like them to be more white than cr though tbh
Just out of curiosity, could you sand down a leather seat using the fine sand paper, maybe start at 500 and work up to 1500 or 2000 then buff using a leather conditioner as opposed to re painting? (I’m thinking of this the way I’d think of removing orange peel) Or do you always have to repaint when you sand leather
you sanding to prep the surface for painting.. your going to remove paint or any clearcoat on the leather whtn you sand.. so only sand when refininshing.
Forensic Detailing Channel ah so not just sanding to remove the bad dead leather on the surface, but sanding to re paint. Is there a way of removing the hardened leather I have on my seats? I’ve conditioned them multiple times the last couple days but they won’t soften up
you dont really want to remove leather buddy. With the exceptions if theres any rips or teras you cut away any bits sticking up before filling and flattening. So really the answer is no mate.
Jon, after step 6, any particular follow up and care steps that are different to caring for the leather in normal circumstances? Also any issue with dye or paint transfer to clothes? ...the missus would kill me if I said hop in on black leather with white pants later ;)
Only I would say using the colorlock shield regulary on the new surface is important. Even if you just to that on the drivers seat. This product will reduce friction wear which is the main enemy to leather.
I used shoe polish on a '98 Passat - badly worn - and it came up nicely, but a litle bit sticky. I'll try giving it a vigorous buffing, maybe some kind of sealant. Now, though, I'd use the proper leather dye and sealant.
Enjoyed that Jon, I would however liked to have seen this applied by airbrush / mini spraygun aswell as sponge, just see the difference in application, as I was a spray painter for 17 years .
