    I've seen a few ELD (Electronic Logging Device) questions here so I'll pin the answer. The ELD Mandate is for trucks with a VIN of 2001 and newer regardless of the engine's date of manufacture. Trucks with year 2000 VIN must check the engine's date if manufacture. If the engine was built in 1999 and put in a 2000 truck it it exempt. This is because typically engine's are built before being put in the truck, sometimes a year before. Trucks with a VIN 1999 or older are exempt.
    The reason for this is ELDs like what was in my 2001 Freightliner Classic XL look for information from the engine's ECM. Excelleration, braking, even seat belt use. Trucks prior to 1999 have ECMs that are incompatible for this or as in my case (1984 Peterbilt) no ECM at all. 3406B Caterpillar is a mechanical engine.
    Also, glider kits in newer trucks, (Beano's Alien Green 389 Peterbilt as seen in a previous video). That truck was a glider. New truck with an older engine from another older truck. In his example it was a 2017 Peterbilt with a 1993 Detroit 60 Series. This truck had no ELD or DPF (diesel particulate filter).
    Hours of Service still applies to me, so I run paper logs and that is legal as my truck is a 1984.

      We recently bought two 2017 Peterbilt 389s, removed the engines, emissions and bought new harness that plugs into the oem firewall plug, connecting to the ecm on the 5ek Cats. We have two gliders also, same deal, new truck, old engines.

    OH WOW! The old days of the cab over with the huge tough guy with his crow bar behind the wheel. This is about the coolest thing ever. My step father swore by them in the 60-70's. Because thete was no air ride back then he said the only draw back was the rough ride back then on back roads, old school highways, rail roads tracks and sometimes even dirt roads was a bitch which back then was a great deal of long haul trucking unlike today.

      Cabovers are what I started in,back in 1987. That's damned near all you would ever see on the super slab, Cabover Petes, KWs ,Freightliner, Internationals, old Whites, and the occasional Marmons and Volvos.
      LMFAO! Nowadays, you can only find Cabovers on TH-cam!
      They didn't have the comfort or that nearly Cadillac ride,but it was no problem getting around any city, or getting them in or out of anyplace.

    When I saw NY to Chicago with FSC first thing this morning, I knew my day was going to start out right. I used to turn that trip sometimes twice a week. Made a lot of money especially in the winter because no one wanted to deal with PA l-80 in the snow. I had a 76 White RC II at the time. That, of course, was before all this computer junk. Owned my own trucks and had my own customers and the truckin' life was good. Then deregulation came in. I lived in NJ at the time and slowly got out of the trucking business and gave it up completely in 86. I'm retired now and live in GA and life, once again, is good but I love watching your posts. Brings back some really good memories. Thanks and keep 'em comin'. Oh, and I still think you shouldn't do any fancy stuff with that 362. Keep it like it is, a good, honest, hard working truck.

    • @SuperHigear
      @SuperHigear 4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Tom H : Deregulation put a lot of us out. I was a single truck owner-operator and I was forced to sell my Brockway cabover when my profitable mainline runs became some big company's new back haul; they were willing to haul it as long as it covered their fuel cost. There was no way I could compete against that. I went to driving for a guy who had a secure long term contract to haul dairy products from western NY to NYC. Not the greatest run but it paid the bills

      Hendrickson suspension is the leading cause of Hemorrhoids.
      It wasn't so bad to bobtail a cabover if it had air- ride suspension, especially if it was a Ford 9000 cabover. Those things had 8 bag air- ride, and would scare you to death going through a turn or curve, for the first time.

    Glad I found you brother! I have loved Cabovers since I was a kid in the 70's...BJ and the Bear days, lol. My uncle drove produce from Florida in a cab over with the same paint scheme as BJ's truck in the show. So as a 7 yr old, I'd dream of driving for a living...but I'm a 50 yr old Machinist with my own shop and I am driving a Stinkin Lincoln Town Car to MN from Rochester, NY and my truck driving career was just a childhood thing obviously. Anyway, I was looking for good vids of the drive to see if there were any cool info on what to see as I head to Minnesota. I'm going to meet up with my newly found biological Sister and family to do some ice fishing. Great vid. BTW, Attica Arcade RR was a staple as a child growing up out that way. Great steam engine action and nice little towns around it. Safe travels brother, and I'll be watching now. Thanks. Paul from WNY

    I used to pull into the truck stop on Friday evening after loading in Georgia an spend the weekend until Sunday night an leave about 11pm to unload in Niagara Falls. Couldn't unload until 12 midnight. I was pulling a bulk tank at the time. The restaurant had a beef pot roast with taters, gravy an green beans with some type of dinner roll that I would eat a whole basket full. After unloading in Niagara Falls I would go back east to 81 north up to Watertown then off on 11 over through Governuer over to Balmatt to load clay or either go on over to 87 north up to Willsboro an load an go back an forth from there to Niagara Falls all week and on Friday load to go south somewhere stopping in Virginia at my home for the weekend and head south Sunday evening. I used to stop at Wilton trk stp off 87 north quite a bit. Got snowed in at Wilton a couple times. They had the best coconut cream pie ever. I would eat a piece in the restaurant an take a piece back to the trk an eat as not to look like a pig. I pulled everything an drove every type truck made for 50yrs an im retired now. I pulled your trailer along with every type of flat bed heavy an wide. Happy motoring buddy. I watch your videos often. I don't watch very many other drivers because most of them have filthy mouths an act like a Jake brake is only thing on a truck.

    Spent some time with TransAm in the 2010's. Absolutely HATED electronic logging - that and those crappy, inflexible HOS laws which essentially screw you out of making anything like decent money. Another reason I quit trucking is because hardly any truck stops have decent places to eat anymore. All you get is Subway and fast food crap. And, after a long day of driving, I sure as hell didn't want to cook!!! Did I mention expensive showers??? Anyhow, love your videos and admire you and your fellow drivers who've stuck it out, especially during this last years chaos. Cheers, BWB

    Great video man!! I definitely have a soft spot for those old cabovers , in my opinion that’s what a real truck is made of.
    Speaking of motorcycles and covid, I was in Daytona Florida for bike week when COVID rolled through and the county shut the event down. A bizarre experience for sure.
    I have been watching your channel and some others as well and I am now reliving my childhood dream of being a trucker via TH-cam. Wife and I were down in Daytona Beach this march when someone pulled out in front of us. Long story short we spent 2 weeks in the hospital, she broke 3 ribs and I shattered my ankle. Totally destroyed my 89 Tour Glide. I’ve had a lot of time on my hands while recovering at home and have been exploring different CDL schools and starter companies. One I keep coming back to is TMC, seems like they may be a good stepping block. What are your thoughts? Thanks for the videos and keep up the good work
    Mike

    Love the sound of your truck, the turbo and all. I have noticed that you use your clutch when pulling from 0 till next gear, but after this, you don't use the clutch. I am not used to American trucks, so I am a little surprised to see this.
    Do you shift with rpm, or do you have a semi automatic clutch?

    • @mattmatson4382
      @mattmatson4382 4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Its called floating gears you can use the clutch but if you get the rpm right you can slide in and out of gear with out the use of a clutch. Its a skill to be able to do it properly with out grinding

    How comfortable is it running a COE over the road? What I mean is do you have someway to keep cold items or a microwave? Just curious because back when my dad and older brothers ran COE’s and flat top conventionals they relied on truck stops for food and drinks. I am couple decades younger then older brothers. I was an oops baby. Parents were in their 40’s when I was born. Dad almost 50. I run OTR in a Mack Anthem. I have a roomy sleeper with fridge, microwave, inverter, TV etc. All nice but not real trucking like they did. What I mean is I remember riding in the K100 and my brother’s W900A model. Both flat tops not aerodynes. Loved the sound of those old 3406 Cats. We had a 359 which I remember seemed small. Just loved the old trucks but am spoiled by new stuff. I started in a 91 FLD 120 then moved to a Century class.
