Flight of Dragons - the final battle between Sir Orrin Neville-Smythe and Bryagh

  • See the flight of dragons fall from the skies, Sir Orrin say his oath, defeat the evil devil dragon of Ommadon and hear Ommadon laugh at them all. Also note the GLORIOUS voice of James Earl Jones as Ommadon... amazing. Don McLean also sings the intro theme song at the start of the film. Do yourself a favor and track it down.

I absolutely cannot get this comment out of my head. I still think about it years later whenever I become even mildly impressed with something I've achieved. Then a little voice in my head tells me that I'll never be as cool as Sir Orrin. I have, no kidding, thought about this comment at least once or twice a week since reading it about 4 years ago. I'm guessing it will haunt me to my dying day. I just...I just wanted you to know.

What is heartbreaking about Sir Orrin's final words, is that he finally found true love in his aging years and was willing to give up the life of a wandering Knight in order to have a life with that Love. And though it was brief, it was real and lasting happiness and the loss of it was enough to give him the strength to withstand dragonfire and raze evil to ash. And that, my friends,is not a feat to speak of in light jest, but in solemn and respectful tones.

on the dragon itself... that Dragon was strong, killing them all with little effort and only dying to one knight who was prepared to be cooked alive just to get the sword hot enough to deal one strike to the dragon using its own fire against it to heat the metal.
It shows both the strength of the dragon, how easily it killed, and the commit of the knight to take one last stand for his falling friends.
      ------
The whole story is just about the wizards putting all the magic in one place to keep it alive so mankind still has the ability to dream and hope for a better tomorrow. The only one of the 4 brothers whose magic wasn't fading, was the evil one because of the nature of his magics domain. For now, the magical balance was against him because one man used logic and reason to dismiss his even his magic, which is why magic was fading to begin with.
The only reason his was thieving was because logic and reason hadn't yet beaten his kind of magic, mankind had figured out medicine, removing the Gold wizards demand, the green wizard and blue wizards were also conquered by mankind figuring out how to conquer nature. Only the Red wizard remained a threat because he spread lies and deception. Even in his fight with Peter, he said "I can block out the sun". But Peter basically met that with "where it was dummy...", meaning Sir Peter knew that in truth, Ommadon could only block out where the sun was a moment ago and it was still there, he knew all the Red wizard had, was a lie. He had figured things out because he cured himself of his mind being trapped in the dragon's head, by realising two minds can't share a single one, thus he finally understood why magic was loosing against logic and reason to begin with.Baiscally, in their world, reason is ultimately, logic was truth. When faced with the Red wizards whose power thieving on corruption and lies, knowing that logic and reason was the reality and truth gave him the edge.
Logic is also why the Green wizard failed to stop the windmill in the introduction of the animation to begin with, because that windmill was a product of that same force. He could heal the fairies and swan, but in truth he couldn't protect the land anymore now mankind was conquering it.
Because the death of the evil wizard and sealing of all magic in one place and thanks to the surviving 3 remaining wizards joint power, their power gave back life to the land, renewing it. It broke the curse that had plagued the land they were in that came from their fallen evil brother.
The irony is, Ommadon could have lived in that magic domain too with his brother's, had he not been so convinced that his magic could survive. Because even he was under threat. Even then, though the evil wizard was dead, its made clear evil doesn't just go away its part of their world of magic as much as any other. It still remains, its just lost its "master" as such. The main source of his power is the Red crown, which cannot be destroyed that easily as it was a magical artifact. So while it remains, wherever it remains, evil could return. But since it was taken to the real world and away from the magical realm, it will be limited - until a time mankind returns to relying on magic, if that ever happened.

Part of what is so awesome here is that he not only knew he would die, but also he knew he needed his sword to be red hot. He knew puncturing the dragon’s flesh was not enough, he had to ignite the flammable gas within him.
And that meant he knew he would have to stand there and be burned alive in order to heat his sword up enough. He knew what was about to go down, and he was crazy/strong enough to take it with composure. So epic!

Sir Orrin won because Bryagh was overconfident and wanted to burn him to death instead of just crushing him. One thing that annoyed me about this scene was the claim that the reason Bryaugh didn't get KO'd by that Hobbit-looking guy's magic flute song was because Ommadon's control over him was too strong. I much prefer the idea that Bryaugh is actually simply really evil and thus the matter of Ommadon's magic has no significance in the situation. Not that there's any reason Ommadon's control over the other dragons should be so weak anyways.

    • @CreaturesGtS
      @CreaturesGtS 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

You also have to take into account that Bryagh and Ommadon were bonded. Perhaps even Bryagh was hatched by Ommadon. The movie never really goes into detail about the deep magic of the realm, but it could by hypothosized that your magical influence over a dragon can increase over time. Ommadon only controlled the masses of dragons for a short few day/weeks. He had Bryagh for 12+ years and thats only a fraction of the true amount of time because Bryagh was an egg stealing adult when Sir Orrin recounted his tale of fighting the evil dragon and almost killing him.

They don’t tell stories like this today, there isn’t any graphic violence but there is violence, only, through the power of language and the handling of the dialogue. We really don’t need to see a knight roasting in his armor but we can still know what has occurred and the impact is just as great in our recollection. Beautifully done and old school DND type adventure and it is still as powerful at it is in 2022 ever since the 80s.
I should hope to see this touch new generations of would be story tellers and children without so much of the abusive intrusion of harsh violence and wild adult scenes. I’m no prude by any stretch but there is a place for all things as a true challenge is how you can still convey such subjects while keeping the larger parts to people’s imaginations.

This story is like a fairy tale, like a myth. To be judging scenes from mythology or fairy tales like a broken episode filled with plot holes from Star Trek Voyager is erroneous. The two are different mediums.
Such stories, like The Flight of The Dragons, have metaphors and symbols to be taken into account.
How many myths and fairy tales speak about impossible feats, or impossible act of heroism in the face of imminent death?
Sir Orrin's last stand is such an act. His standing into the fire of Bryagh says something of Sir Orrin and of the quest. It is the TRIAL BY FIRE metaphor that we meet in all good stories.
Now, to the rational aspect of our mind it looks unbelievable but to our irrational aspects of ourselves, it fills us with awe cause our psyche senses something that links in a metaphorical way our own journey in life to that scene .
I mean, aren't we using metaphors in most of our daily speech? Aren't we telling our children stories filled with dragons and knights that braves the fire? :)
