    You see, the other wizards made a critical error.
    At the end of it all, they chose not to destroy the Red Crown, as it was a part of the very fabric of magic, and they thought it harmless without Omadon.
    What they failed to realize, is that during this speech, Omadon poured his dark determination into the Red Crown, such that even after its master’s demise, the Red Crown continued to influence man towards self destruction.
    A few scenes in the movie even hint at this being the case.
    Now, does that mean defeating Omadon was pointless? No. The Red Crown is powerful and dangerous, but it’s not self-aware, and so it just guides humanity towards a vague doom, rather than a specific one.
    If Omadon had survived, humanity wouldn’t have made it past WW1.

    Only James Earl Jones could masterfully nail such a powerful statement on the human condition and how evil and destructive we can be. It's honestly quite staggering that this kind of message and imagery is in a kids' movie, but that's what I love about it. It's not afraid to be adult when it wants to be.

      I agree! James Earl Jones nailed it here... but the monologue could've done expounded upon. Here's my expansion on it.
      Ommadon: You know, Carolinus... I have weapons at my disposal. Weapons which you would not even dare to use. For you see, it is not logic, ethics, and kindness that lead a man onwards. It is not science and curiosity that guide his actions. Instead, it is fear that rules man. It is terror that grips and governs his beating heart. It is this same fear that I'll use to destroy man. By summoning all the dark powers that I command, I shall infest the spirit of man with a fear so great that he'll use his science and logic to destroy himself. Can you imagine the chaos and havoc I can create? I'll turn brother against brother so that all the enemies he sees will be in his own household! I'll have it so that greed and avarice prevails in the minds of men, so that they'll even praise greed itself, and those who fail to hear and heed my words will pay the price forever. I'll teach man how to use his machines to their fullest potential. Slowly but surely, I'll teach him what damage and terror distorted science can give birth to so that he grows to fear the very tool he so happily studies. I'll teach him how to fly like the faeries and birds that he envies. And I'll give him the ultimate answers to every question his science could ever ask... and the world will be free for my magic to rule again!

    Looking back at this 30 years later, it's a remarkably fine, literate script. The central concepts are very well expressed, the acting is excellent and even the Rankin/ Bass animation, though a little stiff, is based on elegant conceptual art and good very good today.
    Plus the story is melancholy, and has many fine high-fantasy themes and sequences that are far superior to nearest contemporary movie, which I suppose was Disney's 'Black Cauldron'

      @Tony Rubens technology isn’t what saves us, it’s science itself that will. The understanding of our world on a deeper level allows us to live in harmony with it, and to right the wrongs of our collective past. As we came to understand that throwing things in the river pollutes what is downstream, we decided on different methods of disposal. Once we understood that compost and waste was nitrogen rich, we diverted common waste compost to our farming sectors. This same theme, revelation and salvation through observation and counter action, is occurring all around the world. Tony stark may not fly in and save us with flashy new tech, but a humble gardener connecting their successes to the worlds problems through a knowledge of history can beat back an encroaching desert with a precisely placed line of trees. A similar technique can stop land erosion. Stop a drought. Save a harvest. Preserve a home from landslides. Rebuild a long dead forest, and ultimately recreate a sanctuary for creatures of all kinds. If technology is to be found in these processes, it is to make our efforts more timely and efficient.

    • @curts7801
      @curts7801 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      The only reason to do a remake would be to bring the final battle into consistency with the plot. Science and technology grow Ommadon’s power, yet the ending shows that their flourishing undoes him. That’s a major fall, and needs to be fixed.

    • @I-VisiBomb-I
      @I-VisiBomb-I 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@curts7801 not really, because the whole symbolism is that as long as you have responsible people use technology, it can be used for good rather than evil. Think about it. antiquity said that Peter is from a family that had originally been the first dragon tamers in history, so he’s bound to be respectful to magic and imagination, ALONG with technology. I’m the final battle he shows us that technology is here to stay, and it’s how you use it that matters, rather than if it exists or not. It’s just like Carolinus said, logic needs magic to survive, because all great inventions were made because of magic (being an analogy for nature and imagination).
