I bought a mining gpu once. It died after 2 days so I returned it and the seller replaced it but made me pay for the shipping both ways. I live really far so it cost a lot. After that the 2nd one died after a day and I couldn't get any refund anymore. A few months later I check the reviews and a lot of people were scammed like me. By then the seller had sold hundreds of these. (The reviews only had 5 stars review when I bought mine) Never again.
It's not about gpu itself, it's about not giving my money to miners, don't forget miners and scalpers for miners were the problem , so yeah that's my answer , if it was to buy a gpu I'd buy it from a gamer , just like I did with my 1070TI and also it was a really good deal, for 200€
Performing service to humanity. This is great to know for the future, and especially for my brother who is in the market currently. As always, I love your style and videos, but your methodology is simple, practical and can easily be used by others to test their own! Keep up the great content.
I've noticed a lot of people lying about mining on their GPU they're selling. A lot of them attempt to say that it was used for light gaming, but then if you check their sales profile, they've got like 10+ listings saying lightly used. That's when you know they're lying 😂😂😂
@@TechDweeb You should! You have no idea how frustrating it is when I hear a really familiar chiptune on Whang's videos and I can't search for it or nobody knows in the comments.
It doesn't matter. Just open it up clean it put fresh thermal paste and the most important part is replacing the thermal pads on the memory primarily and it will run like any new version of it. In this Video the GPU I say is running a bit hot so opening it up and doing all what I said will bring those temps down. My 1660ti which is an Asus dual fan modal is almost no different from gigglbye's modal and after i repasted and repad. It was 67c now it maxs out at 59c in the same room temp. Also the memory can OC by +1250mhz so that's how I know this X mining card it has so much life left
It's an issue of memory cycles. Mining taxes memory pretty heavily, the thing I'm after most of the time I buy a GPU is longevity. I want to not have to worry about that part for 5+ years. Since memory is the thing that fails first usually(fans don't count, they're disposable) I would imagine that means you are closer to the end of the cards life than some. That being said most people don't buy GPUs like me and this is probably better for most than something owned by some kind of power gamer running the thing 12 hours a day, at 99% utilization, overclocked and in some poorly designed, cool looking case that just bakes the poor thing. If you only plan to use something like this to replace a dead card, or just get a card in a build until the next-gen cards come out in a year or so, and you can find a good deal it's probably worth it. I just wouldn't pay close to retail. Thanks for sharing your results, love the content and I look foreword to any updates in this experiment.
only way i would considered a used Mining GPU for is if i wanna make some budget dedicated streaming workstations or dedicated content creation workstations. for gaming, i wouldn't use a used mining GPU unless it's a last resort
I just purchased a rx580 8gb for about $100 less than a new on sale 6500xt. The seller was very transparent about it's use in mining and posted screenshots of the Unigine heaven benchmark and the 30 min OCCT stress test. I am running a 4850 in my new build that I've owned since new. I overclocked and overvolted it in it's day. I just needed something to tide me over until until I could afford a newer GPU. I had to clean and repasted it, but it works fine. Patience and communication with the sellers has hopefully got me something that will last as long as my 4850 has. Great video by the way. You make some very good points and the used market can be your friend.
You are absolutely right, it's a gamble. So the question is, how much are you gambling? $500 for an RTX 2080 ti? Hell no! I see a LOT of cards that are not that old being sold "for parts only" and that tells me that not all miners know what they're doing. Having said that, I like the card you chose. It's a fairly safe bet and $120 Canadian pesos doesn't sound too bad. Remember kids, always tear down your used GPU's and clean them out thoroughly and re-apply thermal pads and paste! I've opened many GPU's and laptops to find the paste has been reduced to chalk. No esta bueno.
I rather spend a little bit of extra money and get something new, you made solid points and I respect it, but it's not something I want to risk.....I rather have piece of mind.... Also I have no respect for miners, I'm not giving them any money for their used and abused cards they can rot along with their mining cards for all i care.....they made us gamers go through hell just to buy one decent enough card for gaming, so screw them.....
Mining gpus aren’t really different from ones in like corporate render rigs or just standard gaming pc gpus. It really just depends how they treated their gpus. If they are temp controlled and get their fans replaced when broken it should be just as good as new minus the box
one thing I noticed is that newer cards, likely those that have not been used for mining that long have higher gpu clocks on stock and of course better temps. I also got a mining gpu and temps were higher even after replacing the thermal paste. I have yet to try replacing the thermal pads, just needed to get the correct measurements.
We have cheap electricity, so last time crypto crashed, we had some amazing deals. The RX 470 was still available new when crypto boomed, 570 was a brand new card. After it crashed, we could get used 4GB models for as low as 70 euros. Well, after a couple of months actually, but if you waited, you could get some insane prices. The still very mighty 1070 could be had for 150. New cards were still overpriced on the regular market, but gray market was very affordable. This time, they say about 80% are mining Ethereum. So unless a new coin appears, it should become unmineable in September. Or, if they don't decide to postpone it. Again. You sure nVidia cards can flash custom bios? I think they've locked them efficiently. Also, when I'm looking for a user mining gpu, I try overclocking the memory. While they do underclock and undervolt the gpu, they often overclock memory too far and if it artefacts with small memory overclock, chances are it'll die rather soon. At least those are my thumb's rules.
Oh I'm not sure about the vbios, that's what the guy said but maybe he misspoke. You've got me curious to know about the memory overclock. I'm gonna check that out before I pass this off to cuz.
miners trying to cut their losses selling their gpus to gamers... do not concede to their shamelessness... only buy them if they are in perfect conditions and heavily discounted, like 90% under msrp.
cool video but thats a no for me.... cuase 2 years i was trying to get a gpu just or gaming and i couldn´t, so I won't be giving a miner my money (who is responsable for rising up the gpu pricess so badly in the first place...) so now he can recover his "loses" nah, hate mining and I dont want to make them thing that they can do it again and sell again to gamer afther the bubble breaks again
If it looks like its in good nick, I personally wouldnt mind getting one, but i have a 1080 at the moment, and it runs everything I need, so am not looking to upgrade right now…
One thing to be careful of is that often miners will flash a non-stock BIOS to the video card to increase efficiency. As long as it has the OG BIOS or you can get the original BIOS, you should be golden.
Yeah I had that problem once. I bought a mining RX 570 that had a mining bios. Easy enough to flash it back to stock. I probably should have mentioned that in the vid.
I mean, you could look at it as a GPU that's been soak-tested for months and passed.

my main concern isnt abnout the mining, its the fact you buying something in unknown condition from an unknown person, its a gamble, and i dont gamble
That's fair.

Love that track!
And you raise a good point, I should be including credits for the music I've used. I'll add this to the description in the future.

That's a good point. I think there's also some randomness in this stuff. Some gpus used for mining will show worse symptoms than others.

A mining gpu that has been mining for months have been working like a regular gpu has done after years of work. Ofc mining gpu is a big risk
Just bought a 1070 that was mined on. I’ve never had a good gpu before. It fucking slaps in Apex and Warzone.
is it still working?
@@fiftymk_fox4914 yes it is.
did you run these games on default clock settings? Mine seems be be only clocking at 1920 Mhz and drops when it reaches a certain temp
