I was happy once, I graduated but than,it was like where do I go from here?
    The three things, I learned:
    1. The path you start may not be the one you stick with long term.
    2. School doesn’t define your character but should help build upon it. And doesn’t make you better than anyone else just a more informed person (this is subjective).
    3. The only certainty is that no matter if my path branches off I want to remain a life long student.

1½ month after my graduation I am still unemployed, I tried to apply to many companies but so far within that time only 1 answered and had interest on my application but in the end I was not accepted. This video has enlightened once again.
To those who are like me and is anxious
Do not think of being hired so easily after your Graduation, take your time, explore, and do the things you weren't able to do ever since you got very busy from school.
Learn new skills from the internet or something, Work on your self, Play your favorite game and rank up, Go to the gym or read books. Put in work on your own pace and always stay positive

Knowing as much as you know because you completed your studies, opens up so many possibilities for you. Instead of waiting for some company to hire you, the thing you need to do is hire yourself by way of entrepreneurship. Just do some brainstorming and write down some of your ideas so you can pick the best one and run with it!😊

I'm a 32 year old mother of two who just earned my associates this year and am planning to go on to pursue my bachelor's but struggling to decide what I truly want to do. I've recently realized that I limit myself constantly, thinking I could never do this or that. Ever since I've started being kinder to myself and working on my own limiting beliefs, a whole new world of opportunities has opened up to me. I'm still not sure what I want to do yet, but inspiring and positive videos like this help a ton. Sure, these things are often obvious, but we are forgetful and also need to hear it from other people and explained in different ways. So thank you for what you do

Needed to hear this! Going through a lot right now. I finished school not too long ago and entered the workforce for what I went to school for. I quickly realized this career isn’t for me, however. My mind has been spiraling because I can’t believe I went to school for 5 years for this, just to not like it. I loved what you said at the beginning about envisioning what you want, and doing your best to connect the dots. I still don’t know exactly what I want, but I do LOVE the outdoors and hiking. So, I put my two weeks in at my job and I’m going to work in our National Parks next week! Still no idea where life is heading, but I do see it already aligning more with what a want! Wish me luck 😅

@@ikg459 yes!!! Way better so far! There were a ton of bumps along the way for sure and I experienced so much anxiety (still do from time-to-time) BUT I’ve had time to think and reflect on how I enjoy working, and now I’m going to give being an electrician a try! I have my interview tomorrow, so send some good energy please 😄 this year has been crazy though, but all the little decisions I’ve made towards how I want to live my life are coming together, and it feels really good!

I really wanted to complete my master's abroad after graduating in 2022, but I couldn't do it because I didn't have the money. I didn't know what to do, so my friend suggested that I learn German, which he was going to do. However, I didn't take his advice. I still don't know why I didn't do that. Maybe it was because my father is not wealthy and learning German is expensive, so I didn't pursue it. Now I realize he would have managed to get the money if I had asked. I didn't take that risk.
After a depressing period, I decided to do my master's here, which I completed this year. It turned out to be a huge mistake. Now, I'm stuck and don't know what to do. I applied to an Italian university for a master's degree and got accepted. I thought we could sell our land to fund my education, but there was a civil case involving the land, so we couldn't sell it initially. Now that we've won the case, the buyer is saying he needs some time to transfer the funds. It's been months.
Now, I have little chance of getting a visa, partly because I've already completed a master's degree. I wish I had taken a job after graduation to gain at least two years of work experience, which would have helped my situation. I don't know why I'm writing this; I just needed to share it with someone. It's been overwhelming.

Believe it or not, it was around the 4th quarter of my freshman year of high school when I watched a couple of your "day in the life of" videos. I know that some people think epiphany moments don't actually exist, but those videos truly caused an epiphany in my life. Prior to that, I had never done "bad" in school, per se, but I truly started investing in myself and my education. I started realizing who I was and who my friends were, but also what I was capable of. I was just in Algebra 1 at the time, but I decided to actually study for my last exam. I got the best grade in the class. Ever since then, I haven't stopped. Now I'm nearly done with my 2nd year of undergrad, and to see one of your videos pop up after so long made me experience quite a few emotions. Keep doing you. You'll do great. You taught me so much when I desperately needed it, and you showed me what I am capable of. Good luck in your future endeavors.

This video both destabilized and comforted me. In one way, you just remembered me that I actually don't know where I wanna be in the future, and at the same time, you showed me that somebody else had these thoughts. I'm at the last year of university (in Italy for most degrees is 3 years of a "major' and then a 2 years specialization. I'm on my third and last year of major in philosophy). I hope I'll find something that will inspires me

    • @criticalfish
      @criticalfish 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

This video should actually make you uncomfortable. His first point is made out of fear of joining an industry or line of work you wont enjoy. Regardless of how you “feel”, if you do not have special talent, you will have a hard time switching careers later into the game. By the time you’re 30, youve used the time post college until then to experience 6-7 years of work.
I can tell you first hand, I was lost by the start of college, then chose to major in business (I look at medical / engineering careers as more valuable, obviously. I also learned to generally avoid Lib Arts degrees and improve my knowledge on the STEM side) but decided to specialize in marketing, and extend my knowledge on data analytics. By the time I graduated, I beefed up my experience with 2 internships and a couple of certificates for marketing. About 6 months into my first job (that I was STILL definitely unqualified for), I realized I need to improve, and not even necessarily in that industry, but specifically in the following areas:
      - Discipline (how much can you give up to ensure your work is great)
      - Becoming a sponge for knowledge (school ends, but you learning on the fly NEVER ends)
      - Find where you can specialize (industry, company, type of work)
Ultimately, you have to add value in some way, or you will quickly be outsmarted in many ways.

Hello, I relate so much with lesson 2. You really have to cultivate community. I was a quiet person during college but it didn’t affect as bad as it did after college. Here’s the thing, you need CONNECTIONS to get you jobs and help you get to your chosen path. I’m currently learning it the hard way. I left my programming job 3 months ago and I’m struggling to find a new one. I’m 28 years old. It’s hard to compete against so many applicants on indeed. On the other hand, my first job was easier because it wasn’t really advertised, I just knew a friend that knew another programmer there, and they both helped me. So in summary, if you’re currently employed don’t take your professional future for granted. Always try to meet new people.

Hi John. I don’t comment often but this was an incredible video. I am 22 and graduating college this semester and resonate deeply with your points and have been using them for the past few years. I think it’s the bravest thing to do is to be strong enough to actually try to get to know yourself and what you truly want out of life and ask those deep questions. For me, I want to travel and experience all these different cultures and eventually end up in the sustainability field, even though I majored in business administration. This past semester I spent in Australia, Fiji, and New Zealand. I want everyone to know once you start asking those deeper questions and pursuing your interests and desires, you meet others who inspire you to continue on your path.

Hello John Fish! I want to start by saying that I'm a big fan of your videos and they inspire me to be more organized and planned in my daily life. Your advice is valuable and has helped me a lot, especially the video about '3 Lessons for Life After Graduation'.
Even though I'm only in my first year of computer engineering, your videos motivate me to pursue my goals with discipline and consistency. Your message reminded me that success doesn't come overnight, but it's built through hard work and perseverance.
I want to thank you for sharing your experiences and wisdom with the world. I hope you continue to produce amazing content to inspire us all. Keep making a difference in people's lives, hugs from Angola!
Thank you for being an inspiration to me and many others. You are awesome!

Your videos never fail to amaze me. As a foreign student living in a country with a completely different set of beliefs and culture, it is very hard for me to find a community. Oftentimes, I get tired of having to translate my soul over and over again to people who don't speak my language (figuratively). I have longed to find a kindred spirit, and there you are, thousands of miles away. But the mere fact that you exist is enough for me to keep moving forward and have faith that someday, I will make lifelong connections and find a community where I truly belong.
Don't stop making videos. Watching you feels like having a wise and supportive friend. And as always, thank you for taking the time and effort to create quality content!

Like you mentioned you already had two friends that you were close with, so having the brunch was the easy way to meet new people without being alone and starting out fresh. So, most people likely will not move to a community where they have long-term friends who live nearby.
That’s actually a good way to meet people, however, the way you mentioned it was saying “we decided to have a weekly Sunday brunch”, meaning it wasn’t just you doing it by yourself. So, maybe it’s fine right out of college to hang with your old friends, but most people will likely move away as they get jobs and get coupled up fast. So, to be fair your advice is good, but it’s not the best long-term advice.
My advice would be to look up local book clubs, or organizations they have hobbies that you individually have an interest in. Going alone will be the most healthy way to meet new people without your safety net of having long-time friends go with you.
It’s okay to go try new places that you are interested in seeing, like nature walk areas, dog parks, etc.
So, what happens is you meet people at different points of your life and you never want to just keep hanging out with the people you grew up with since a young child.
Exploring different places and trying new hobbies by yourself is the best advice to meet new friends. If you’re lucky then you will click with certain people at different phases of your life. Don’t hold onto friends who have different interests and allow yourself to do things that make you happy individually.
One thing that was a unique experience was going to a “trivia night” every Wednesday at a local sports pub/restaurant. I would invite people and they would invite people and eventually we had the largest table in the room at times. Where we had at least six tables pushed together. Good times!

This video for me was needed as I’m hopefully graduating next year with a Social Work degree and then fingers crossed I get my chance to enter the X- Ray technician program at my local community college. I loved the small but important lessons especially the last one. I legit have that mean side talk in such a negative way and do not give myself the credit I deserve when it’s needed and is filled with self-doubt. I truly thank you for this video and it’s lessons. Dude. This video is so fucking crazy to me. I just finished going through the process of setting my life goals after graduation. Literally yesterday, I JUST did exactly what you were talking about when you said to “be your own best friend”. Like, the same exact shit. I was feeling super sad about my first SAT score and just about myself in general (in regards to my “success”, then, suddenly and for the first time ever, I stopped MYSELF. I went to the mirror, and just like you, I talked to myself in third person: “you’ve got this Nina. I have your back, but it doesn’t help me when you insult me like that. You’re capable of doing what you want, and what you work for will find you. You are NOT an impostor. When it feels like no one does, I have your back”. Also like you, I really suffer from anxiety, and since dropping out of college (have since re-enrolled), I’ve also been feeling a weird sense of loneliness despite having friends. It’s just what you described; not having community is not something you can really identify as an important factor to the social aspect of your mental health, especially when it’s been taken for granted for so long (school). I’m rambling and this comment has zero structure, but I just wanted to rant about how eerily similar I think we both are. this now sounds egotistical to say, but thank you John; you’re a really great dude.

Hey John, you have created three bullet points that will get us thinking on how we conduct our lives. I get what you mean about beating ourselves up instead of praising our accomplishments. The old saying goes like "we are often our own worst enemy." That is why sometimes we have to step back and analyze how and why we are conducting ourselves in the manner that we are.😅

    Thanks for this!
It's been a little over a year since I graduated college and I am feeling unable to move on. I was intending to go to grad school but I always thought I needed a break and that I was unable to do it like I just stare at a blank document when trying to write any PS or SOP. Also I am still not working still as I didn't really try to apply😅
I took an intern position at my school as a Research assistant since spring, and even though I'm writing the paper I still doubt my self sometimes :(. I am hoping to get a couple of my grad school applications done by end of fall before decisions rolling but my head just goes on hold 😅
Thanks John again for this any little help and boost is appreciated! It's nice to see you after a while and good luck with everything!

Graduated 6 months ago (with honors and high gpa) and still no job, though I’ve been continuously applying. I’m now seriously considering going back to school to study something completely different.

Many people confuse "community" (for personal growth) with "identity" (for political cover). And these days too many people give up their own voice for what they call "identity". (While you were posting this, I was making videos in the West Virginia mountains, just now posted.)

The first and last point reminds me a lot of (coptic) Orthodox Christianty.
    1. There is God to worship
    2. Dont be lonly it's not good . build community (confession to a priest.)
    3. Talking to yourself (talking to the Holy Spirit inside of you.)

Thank you for your videos John! We're actually the exact same age, and I've been following your channel on and off since I was a college freshman. There was a lot I disagreed about with you back then, but your cozy videos, your work ethic and wisdom have always inspired me. It's been great to see how much you've matured at the same time as I was going through a lot of the same things, even though we live in completely different parts of the world. So again thanks for everything!
Also, are your growth books available somewhere or if not, will they be? I've dismissed the whole thing a bit back when you started selling them, but now I kinda feel like giving it a shot after all these years.
