    #AskElvis Are F1 cars ever asymmetrical? In a track like Austria where there are only two left-handers, would engineers ever setup a car to be stiffer or lower on one side? I know that they do it in oval racing (obviously) but I’ve never heard of it being done in F1. I’d really like to know if this ever happened during your time at McLaren and if so, how often? Thanks for the videos and engagement Marc! You’re always entertaining.

    • @jonwetherell5214
      @jonwetherell5214 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I think Tyrell built a car with one front steering arm and suspension longer than the other. They worked out that one track was mainly left handers and that this front end would be an advantage. It never raced so it was either banned or proved not to work. Can’t find a picture so not certain of the team but saw the car at a vintage event in the 80´s

    I remember that race. As an American, being an F1 fan was (and is) always a bit frustrating. Here is the most exciting form of auto racing in the world, racing in the most exciting locations in the world, and I live in a country where people think that the ultimate test of man and machine is driving around an oval for 500 or 600 miles, or going in a straight line on a 1/4 mile drag strip.
    The Indianapolis F1 was getting lots of build up from one of the three major TV networks in the country (this was before everything was done on cable channels), and the race was going to be broadcast live on a Sunday afternoon when its major competition was going to be Baseball (a couple of hours of boredom punctuated periodically by moments of excitement) and Golf (a couple of hours of boredom punctuated by nothing). I was hyping the event to all of my friends. I wanted them to finally see the excitement of tiny cars going impossibly fast around a circuit that actually involved turning to the right as well as the left. I thought it would finally be a chance for F1 to make some real inroads into the American market.
    Boy was I wrong.

    Great storytelling :) I remember feeling so sorry for the fans at the track, but also for the Michelin teams. I was also angry that the Bridgestone teams (one in particular) were so unhelpful. No matter what suggestions were made to help the race happen, even those where all Michelin teams said they'd happily go without any points, they said no to it.
    A race of _some_ sort could have taken place, the Bridgestone teams would have got all the points, we as fans could have had some sort of entertainment, but no, Ferrari in particular wouldn't have it because they knew it was a guaranteed 1-2 and they wanted the "optics". To have let other teams run, they might have come in lower down on the road even if they knew they'd win in the end.
    This is still something which rankles me. Each time they threaten to leave F1, I shrug and think those who run F1 should call their bluff. They won't go, F1 is literally their only advertising. Sports car racing, great as it is, is far more a "niche" sport than F1. And over the decades (I remember Enzo running the team...) they've often been quite a toxic team. I know there are Ferrari fans out there, and I'm not knocking them - you like who you like, it's none of my business, but it's such a political team that I can't take to them at all, irrespective of who's driving for them (and some of my fave drivers have done just that). They don't even respect their drivers. At least without Enzo, they do seem to give a damn about getting their drivers back in one piece and breathing. There was a time... smh.

    You might like this true story.
    In the 1970’s my uncle was the chief mechanic for Lotus, they used to travel through Europe in a convoy with the car transporters and the other teams in their convoys would be on the road on the same route at the same time.
    About a couple of hrs away from the next F1 track for the next race, they approached a railway crossing and came across Ron Dennis standing alone on the side to the road, they stopped and asked if everything was OK to which asked “couldn’t give us a lift to the track could you lads?”
    To which of course they did. And Ron arrived at the track for the next race in the Lotus convoy.
    During the rest of the journey with Ron in the truck they all pissed themselves laughing all the way because Ron told them that the Maclaren convoy stoped at the crossing while a long train passed, he got out for a walk and cigarette, and then realised the convoy had carried on and left without him.

    Kimi would have easily won that race. He needed the points for the title. McLaren should have just raced, it's like Kimi at Lotus in early 2013 before the mid-season tyre change. Kimi was a master of the tyres, and had put in on the front row with a load of fuel.

      @@F1Elvis True, but I firmly believe Kimi goes best on softer tyres without camber/pressure restrictions, he has shown it over the years. I am willing to bet Kimi didn't report a single major issue that weekend with the tyres. It's his driving style, and if he managed to deal with it, the others should have just got on with it. Yes there is the legal issue, but if McLaren have trust in their car and driver why not race? Just like in 2013, Kimi had 0 issues with those early Pirellis, while every other driver, including his own teammate was complaining. Anyways you make a good point.

    • @F1Elvis
      @F1Elvis  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@F1Elvis Would have been huge legal issues Marc, fully agree with you. But I am willing to bet Kimi would have been fine with the tyres, that was my point. He has always, as Mark Slade put it, been brilliant with tyre management especially with very soft tyres others work too hard. It would have been a silly risk to take at the end of the day as you put it, but I am sure Kimi could have driven the race without issues, given his driving style and the car McLaren had. And I think he knew that too, hence his reaction.The tyre issues were only prevalent with a few Michelin teams. Not all of them and Kimi's driving style lends itself very well to those sorts of situations (see early 2013 before the mid season tyre change).

    Hello Marc, I'd love to hear your version of events from the Japanese Grand Prix in 2005, your thoughts before and after qualifying, and whether yourself and indeed Kimi had the belief you could win from towards the back of the grid. It would be great to hear your reaction to that last lap pass of course!

    Ha! I was at that race with my then 9-year-old son. We'd gotten up at 4:30 am to drive down to Indy from Chicago, not knowing if there was going to be a race. That's 200 miles if you aren't familiar with the geography. I was really worried there wouldn't be a race and about how disappointed he was going to be. But he was a huge Michael fan, so we might have been the only fans there satisfied with the outcome! I was more relieved than happy, he was thrilled. It was the last race we saw in person till we go to Silverstone in '16.

    Great story, keep these tree-house stories up, I enjoyed that. What I remember is that Michelin runners could have just used the pit lane every lap to avoid the banked corner. But they refused to, it was like "either we race properly or we don't". I feel like Michelin runners should have used the pit lane instead of engaging in brinksmanship. It robbed the fans obviously of a race. Also, how is it that people in the F1 circus could gamble like that? Surely that is now banned as it is for other sports, otherwise the sport is at risk of manipulation.

    • @F1Elvis
      @F1Elvis  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's not actually how it played out, there were lots of legal and political issues and it was actually Ferrari who stopped the most obvious solution of installing a temporary chicane to allow the race to happen.

    Great story Marc. Got any extra insight into Spa 2008? That was such a crazy episode in F1 history and the on track action was out of this world. A fantastic battle for the win ruined by the stewards. The decision to penalise Hamilton for locking up in Fuji is dubious as well considering the fact that he didn't hit anybody and it was actually Kovallainen who made contact with Kimi and forced him off.

    Even after hearing the story I can't even begin to understand what must have felt being in the middle of that!!!
    As a Schumacher fan I remember that race with a mixture of both disappointment and relieve because Ferrari was having a very difficult season but you want to beat your rivals on track! Too bad Indy was pretty much the only track where Bridgestone had a better tyre hahaha
    Since we're talking about tyres and 2005, anything worth mentioning about the Nurb GP? There has to be something! It was heart breaking seeing that crash just at the end of the race (I'm also a Kimi fan! you can never have enough heroes you know!)
