Who Is The Top Dog? - The war for the best battery operated tool is full on. Each company is trying to top the other with specifications that push their tool above others. Specifically, in the hammer drill segment, the torque war is intense. Ridgid now has for sale the new 18V GenX5 Brushless Octane Hammer Drill, Model # R8611506B, with 1300 in-lbs Torque. A few years ago that number would have been 700 in-lbs of torque for this drill.
This new Ridgid Octane Drill with 1300 in-lbs torque is the leader of the pack. There is one other brand, Metabo, who claims the same torque numbers but at a much higher price. Specifications of a tool do not mean that it is the best performing tool or even a player in the top performers, so we dove in a took a close look at the new Ridgid Octane drill and compared it to the Milwaukee 2804-20 that most people seem to really like due to its power and size. If you at all curious as to who would win, Ridgid or Milwaukee, be sure to watch our TH-cam video above.
    Octane Drill Features
Octane tool allows the user to connect to the tool through a hyper octane battery
    1,300 in./lbs. of torque
    Two Speed 0-540 RPM & 0-2000 RPM
    0-8500 BPM & 0-31000 BPM
    Brushless motor
New Chuck light to eliminate shadow around the bit
Micro clutch with over 100 torque settings
Ambi Mode selector to switch between hammer, drill and drive modes
Grip light engages light and not the drill
Backed by Ridgid's lifetime service agreement
    The Battle
Our battle is about power and the ability to do hard tasks over and over without cutting out. While we do not show everything we did in the video due to the length of the video, we pushed both drills very, very hard. The Ridgid Octane Drill has the Milwaukee 2804-20 in torque by 100 in-lbs but the Milwaukee has 1,000 more BPM in hammer mode. The Milwaukee is significantly smaller. We also think it is important to note that the Ridgid has a longer side handle and that is a hint that the power rating is probably true because the UL certification would make them have a handle within the parameters for the power.
Battery choice was difficult because of the new Ridgid Octane batteries offerings and what we had in M18 batteries. We used every Ridgid Octane battery including the 3.0 Ah, 6.0 Ah and 9.0 Ah. On the tests where we compared the two drills directly, we used a 9.0 Ah battery on both and we also would switch bits between each test to make sure everything was fair. We feel the final outcome of the testing is clear as there was never once that the winning tool did not win a side by side contest.
We thank you for your support in watching our channel!

I've run Ridgid tools for years and the larger the battery, the more powerful the tool is. The 6.0 AMP hour battery will make the drill far more powerful than the 3.0 AMP hour battery hands down.

@@Ma77riK ikr that's exactly what I was thinking! People's jaws drop when I tell them My Ryobi drill is just as good as their Milwaukie, Dewalt, and even Rigid drill cause guess what... they are all the same!!! 😂😂😂

    • @l00nybin
      @l00nybin 5 ปีที่แล้ว

@@broken_font1881 they're not exactly all the same. Just because one parent company owns Ryobi, Rigid, and Milwaukee does not mean that they dictate to each company to make them the same. Black&Decker & DeWalt are owned by the same parent company, but the quality between the two is noticeable. Same with TTI: they have certain brands to hit certain price points to appeal to the broadest customer base possible. That will necessitate a difference in either parts quality, options, profit margin, etc., or possibly all of them. I have a Milwaukee hammer drill (2604-20) that just won't quit, but my search for an impact driver has me considering either a Surge bare tool, or spending $50 more and getting a Rigid hammer drill/impact combo that Home Depot has plus 2 extra 4.0Ah batteries. It isn't the hammer drill in this video, but with slightly more torque than my current drill and a lifetime repair/replacement on both tools and the 4 batteries I would have, it's hard to decide!

I can get smart batteries on a hammer drill/ impact kit with a free 1/2" octane impact and a 4.5" octane angle grinder for the same price as an m18 fuel kit for just the drill and impact. That's a huge deal

Don't understand why everyone complains about the size of the Octane drill/driver. It's not made that way to piss off those consumers with little lady hands, it's powerful af, its not made for hanging up picture frames. So unless you want to break your wrist-like dude keeps trying to do with that Fuel-than you need a sturdy weight distribution

While my coworkers ultimately have to buy new tools every 3-5 years due to defects and battery issues outside warranty, I'm still using my Ridgid tools from way back. Surprised at how fast the hammer drilling action is on the ridgid. That's approaching SDS levels of speed, it's crazy to see a hammer drill that can, you know, actually do stuff that a hammer drill is supposed to do, competently. Should be noted that the Ridgid 9.0ah battery is quite a bit more powerful than the Milfucky, having 20700 cells instead of 18650. I think that's 1350 watts vs 1080 watts for max output.

👍👍👏👏 Great review on both tools. MILWAUKEE is for the construction worker and RIDGID is for both construction and DIYer. I personally like RIDGID I voted for RIDGID in the other video. I currently only own the Walmart Hyper Tough 18v nicad drill. It's done what I've wanted it to do to an extent. I do plan on buying into the RIDGID line. And watching videos like this really assures me that I'm going to be making the right choice once I buy in the RIDGID line. I'm just a DIYer don't need expensive tools but I do want good quality and RIDGID offers that without the Mikita and Milwaukee price. Great job guys love what you're doing.

I bought the Ridgid gen x5 platform 3 years ago. I abuse all my tools. All made by Ridgid. Being a journeyman plumber I put them to the test. Ridgid is a great platform. My only gripe is it can be difficult to get a hold of their newest tools. Home depot where I'm at doesn't do a great job with that. Ridgid all the way

@@josephrowley9701 my sentiments exactly. I can buy any tools I want or need for the job. So too can my coworkers. Most use Makita because that is all they ever used. They pick up my Rigid tools and are taken aback by the performance which they claim is better than their platform. But they still stick with their tools because their batteries and charging system is in their specific platform. Also, these are the type of guys that will argue Republican vs. Democrat and are either one or the other because their parents were one or the other. They couldn't argue an issue and only get their information from network television news. In other words, they are dumbed down nuckledraggers that are bereft of critical analysis.
Most use Makita, Dewalt or Milwaukee because that was the path they were led down and are too complacent to look in another direction; they drive a Ford or a Chevy because they always have driven a Ford or a Chevy.

I bought this Ridgid octane hammer drill and returned it 3 times because it made a grinding noise in the Chuck when you let of the trigger in speed 2. Ended up returning it and buying the Milwaukee but it makes the noise as well when in speed 2. It happens when you pull the trigger with no load. The Milwaukee isn't nearly as loud or aggressive though. Have you experience this with those drills or have any idea why they do that?

  • @Zachariahfml

It doesn't matter that the Milwaukee has a higher BPM the mechanism that causes the hammering is smaller overall than the rigid. I'm sure they had to increase the BPM just to squeeze the same amount of performance out of the smaller next gen Milwaukee.

I would be curious to know if the previous Gen 2 milwaukee hammer drill 2704 would do vs. the new smaller model. They have the same stats 1200in lbs, 2000rpm, 32000 bpm. I wonder if by making the drill so much smaller, the hammer also became smaller. If that is the case then the force that the hammer hits would be smaller. That may be the reason why it lost so badly in the concrete drilling comparison. Something usually has to be compromised when you keep shrinking things in size.

It seems as though everyone has this hard on for Milwaukee. I'm not saying that hasn't been earned by the tools but it's nice to see some competition where the "King" just got their throne shaken up.
For improving test results, remove as much human factor as possible. Check out project farm on TH-cam. He did a test with reciprocating saw blades where the saw was attached to a jig with weights. Pressure, weight, angle all stayed relatively equal through all the different tests. To truly get un biased results when comparing two or more, that's how to do it.
