  • This film gives advice on how to conserve and retain our vernacular field gates in today's farming landscape. It includes interviews with a blacksmith and a farmer in Co. Kilkenny.
The film, produced by Shem Caulfield, is part of the Kilkenny Vernacular Forged Wrought Iron Field Gate Project, co-ordinated and funded by the Heritage Office of Kilkenny County Council, in partnership with the Heritage Council.
This project is an action of the Kilkenny Heritage Plan. For more information on the project contact Dearbhala Ledwidge, Heritage Officer, Kilkenny County Council. www.kilkennycoc...

My husband is a man after your own heart, he's not good on the computer but any time he sees the old blacksmith gates coming off anywhere he always tries to buy them to save them. We built a new house 10 years ago in the old farmhouse style and he salvaged 2 old field gates off a local estate before it was turned into a caravan park and we now have them, one as an entrance gate and one going up into the field in front of the house. He saved 2 the other day, they close together, he has yet to restore them. We are from the North, Ballycastle

Did this man document his research in a book? Have a couple of gates here that I’m using around the farm.
